Why does karlaftis ever come out for more than the occasional play?

Most DL guys play a percentage of the snaps. That’s normal. He should get about 75% iMO. The guy plays really hard. You don’t want himniut there when he’s gassed.

What’s your point ?
That Sullivan is such a drop off it’s hard to watch and he’s not ever able to make a play at this level even though he’s a super tough kid (can’t help that he’s a tweener; super tough reviere type player) and so taking karlaftis out just to do it (I.e. ever on this planet unless he’s hurt) is just a stupid idea …

good enough ?

Not really. No way a DE plays every down. There's a drop off to Sullivan? Gee, you think there's a drop off from an All-American to a role player??? WTF?...

A play sure entire series again the announcer called it out too.

you got the first part of the drop off right. The second part should have read as follows .. listen in..

to a DE/DT tweener who isn’t fast for a DE and isn’t big enough to be a DT and who can’t make A play at this level unless it comes right to him …

Dude should not have been coming out for entire series tonight .. kinda like you shouldn’t be in you fifth year depending on kieran Douglas
Didn’t pay that close of attention to know what series or what the circumstances were when he was out but you also have a lot of assumptions in that he was only out of the game for the hell of it. Maybe he had a bathroom emergency, maybe he had a stinger, or cramps, maybe the coaches had something else they wanted to see from a guy and felt comfortable in the game to try it out. Very hard to say but he definitely won’t be an every down guy in the NFL, no d-line guys are

Don’t watch much NFL huh? Even Mack comes out for rotations.
That conversation goes like this

“George.. we want to take you out for an entire series .. but you see, I didn’t develop someone behind you who CAN make a play at this level .. because your backup is a super tough kid who should probably be an offensive tackle.. so instead of a series off how about you take a play off… my bad dude. Yeah didn’t kinda you know GET anyone else by year five you know what I mean? I’m not really sure what happened .. there was that time a couple years ago I thought I did it. I didn’t..”

He was out for entire series. Brohm likes Sullivan. I like him too as a tough player .. he should not be playing entire series for karlaftis.. it’s not smart

Good god man. He needed the occasional blow. Almost every great pass rusher does the same.

A play sure... but again, the announcer said exactly what I said.. so let’s not act like I was dreaming it up. I’m not mad. I just think he shouldn’t come out for more than the occasional play

Again, the circumstances around it are the key. We know you wouldn’t have done it as a coach but anyway maybe he came to coach and said hey, pinched a nerve and my arm’s numb, can’t go until it’s back feeling again. Stuff like that isn’t uncommon

He fits as a DE in a 4-3 scheme

Him coming out isn't that abnormal and as aggressive as this defense is, he is likely to be "gassed" more frequently than before.

This is a non-issue as it kept him fresher later in the game when we needed it most.

As most pointed out, Karlaftis needs a blow every now and then. You are not an effective pass rusher if you are too exhausted to get out of your stance.

When the announcer said he was out for a whole series, OSU was running an uptempo offense, trying to make a comeback. They were running the same personnel and not subbing. Because of that, George couldn’t get on the field. If the offense subs, the D has the right to sub. That’s why you see the ref sometimes standing between the center and QB waiting for the D to get their personnel ready. We could be penalized for too many men on the field while trying to switch players out.

Lastly, through out the game, first and second down are traditionally running plays. If you notice, George rests on those downs and then comes in fresh on third to rush the QB. If you watched the Colts in the 90s/early 2000s, they used the same strategy with Dwight Freeney.

You obviously didn't notice that on the final play of the possession before that, after GK hit the quarterback, he was limping on the sidelines.

No and I was totally off base on this one. Nat set me straight.. totally my bad. A learning moment for sure.

and for the record, I was thrilled about the game on Saturday night. Jalen Graham’s progress alone was just something to give an ovation over

It looked to me like all of the dline starters were out on that same series, until OSU got a couple of first downs and got out past mid field. Maybe CJB was wanting to see how the second unit of dline could do playing together? We were up 9 at the time.

I thought the same thing and posted it during the game. I like developing depth, but It seemed like he was taken out at some of the most critical times, for several consecutive plays.

The weather was cool, didn't seem like the heat and humidity should be a problem.

But then, I'm not the D coordinator, so . . .

Yeah I didn’t know the threshold should be so low and I learned that from some who know more than me but it also seemed like the wrong times to be doing it too. But overall it was a great night
