Who's going to be the new IU coach

Just informed that Dolson is putting a huge offer out to, and intent on bringing

Dennis Gates, head coach, Missouri

to Ass Hall as the new IU coach.
Interesting. And I assume not an attempt at trolling because he’s really good.

What is your source for that, if you don’t mind sharing?

Gosh. So much has changed in college basketball in the last few years, but wouldn’t this be viewed as tampering by doing this during the season?

I know that ethics don’t seem to matter much anymore. I’m just a bit old-school and would like to see better moral behavior by leadership at our universities and other institutions.

IMHO I will listen and value your take over this Twin dope and all other Hoosier turds who some how think their opinions matter on this board….
Thanks-you are kind. IU was recently a dysfunctional mess but thanks to Cignetti and NIL, Dolson has a plum job to offer. No one wants to follow a legend and everyone wants unlimited resources and a strong AD. That’s now IU, largely thanks to Cignetti empowering Dolson, and to some lousy previous hires.

An easy one? Calbert Cheaney doesn’t want to be and hasn’t been a head coach anywhere, and that includes zero chance at IU.

Beard is a fantastic coach who would crawl to Bloomington for the job, but has real, untreated problems with the bottle, and even more than the domestic violence dropped charges, I think that will eliminate him. Any team that hired Beard will win though.

I don’t see Drew having interest after passing on UK, but if he did? That’d be worth following. I don’t think IU boosters would want him at the price he’d command.

Stevens isn’t as crazy as you think. So many reasons the timing is right; elderly parents in Indy, kid in college at ND, Celtics being sold, still 48 and wants to coach before he gets too old. In the NIL era he’d be a grand slam home run of epic proportions. Him and Painter would perennially be in the top ten like the good old 80’s days. And Stevens is tight with Dolson.

May was a perfect fit last year and has a small-ish buyout. He’s very tight with Dolson too. Not completely far-fetched. He’s a Greene County boy and would have loved to be in Bloomington; he also has won above and beyond any expectations- a truly excellent coach who still goes on IU podcasts and refers to the Hoosiers as “we” even though he’s HC at UM.

As said here, Otz has ties to Ames and a large buyout; buyout is big for Cronin too.

Shrews is a great guy and I think an excellent coach but he’s 60-62 in D1. I think that’s a non-starter.

McCollum? I can’t see IU hiring a guy with 20 D1 games who has never coached against a ranked opponent.

I love McCasland—haven’t ever heard about him having connections to IU. He’s never coached out of Texas but if his agent reached out he’d likely be near the top of the list.

If the pie-in-the sky candidates don’t work? I could see Buzz Williams, maybe McDermott if he was interested, maybe even Gates.

That’s what I’ve got; based on who Dolson likes, who makes career-wise sense, and who might be interested.

Now watch them hire McCollum or Shrews lol.

What makes Beard a fantastic coach?

And has Stevens actually said in the last 2 years he wants to coach ncaa bball?

Beard wins like crazy. As Parcells said “You are who your record says you are.” If you’ve watched Beard-coached teams play a lot, they are winning because they are truly fierce.

Shrews has recently said on camera that Stevens absolutely wants to coach again. Stevens doesn’t say anything either way.

hmmm ok

You've been able to watch Beard coached teams multiple times. Because for some reason Purdue seems to play his teams often. Arkansas Little Rock, Texas, Tech, Texas and Ole Miss. Have any of those games been blow outs? He beat Purdue at Arky Little Rock and Texas Tech and you guys have beaten him at Texas and Ole Miss.

If I’m Dolson, I would first look at time tested, proven commodities like :

Shaka (@bonefish1 worst nightmare)
McDermott
Dixon
Drew
Buzz (not sure you can get in a bidding war with TAMU tho)

Then I would look at slightly less proven commodities:

May
Collins
Shrews
Gates
McCasland

Shrews is zero proven as a head coach, he’s below .500. Dixon is 60 years old and has never succeeded at a truly high level; always solid never great. Shaka would be fantastic but he may already be in his dream job. I love Collins for NW, but he’s at .377 in conference. No way in hell he’s considered.

May has been incredibly successful! *chef’s kiss*

The type of coach you want - day 1 comes in updates their jerseys and removes the stars on the back. Tell them only way to move forward is to stop living in the past.

Day 2 - takes the hysterics out back and puts them in a shallow grave.

Day 3 - goes to the bars with pictures of the players and tell them to deny them access to their facilities unless it is a sanctioned team event.

What’s Pitt done since Dixon left ?

What did TCU do before Dixon got there ?(hint: they never made 3 NCAAs in a row)

What did NW do before Collins got there?

Context matters.

So per your Day 3, clearly ‘not Beard’! 😄

Already agreed that Dixon is a good, solid, winning coach. 60 years old and no major accomplishments though.

Pretty sure that Northwestern was able to accomplish a 37%-ish conference winning percentage pre-– Collins.

Beard. Dude wants the job.

Priority list...

1. Stevens
2. Beard

It won't make it past that. Beard would walk his butt from Oxford to Bloomington. And I think he could absolutely win. He was good at Arkansas Little Rock, Texas Tech, had Texas Top 10 and has been good at Ole Miss.

If somehow it made it past 2 and Beard didn't accept...

3. May
4. Ben McCollum
Beard is not employable at IU.

Agree-context matters. But so does winning at the highest level at a P5 program. Dixon is 60 and has done well compared to his successors, but he hasn’t won at the highest level.

Whereas May took a terrible mid-major to the National Championship game, and now has taken last year’s last place UM team to a conference title contender and ranked. Not that May would say yes, but that’s what the top of the list should look like.

It will likely be another underwhelming hire. Beard is a booze hound which I don’t see even IU stooping down to that level and the Stevens talk once again is comical. He’s going to leave his front office job with the NBA champs to take on college recruiting and the NIL headache? Lol okay. I am sure that will be a very quick friendly phone call where he politely declines.
