Which bowl does Purdue go to?

Iowa opened up a 10 point favorite against Northwestern. I think Iowa is the better team and will likely win. I just don’t see them losing to Illinois or Minny unless they have a complete melt down. And even if they do lose twice, Purdue still has to handle their own business. My guess is that Purdue ties Northwestern (with Northwestern holding the tie breaker) or Northwestern wins it by a game. Again, if you told me at the start of the season 8 wins plus a bowl game and second in the Big West I would have taken that in a heart beat. If you would have told me that after 0-3 I would have laughed at you while drinking away my sorrows. But here we are.

in today's article, jerry palm is predicting Purdue will go to Detroit or maybe Texas. he's predicting Purdue will finish 7-5. he's also pointing out Purdue will not go back to San Francisco as the BIG 10 has a new policy against teams going back to playing in the same bowl game, except for the final 4 championship. he also says the BIG 10 and not the Bowls has the final say where their teams will play. and the BIG 10 doesn't like sending teams to the same area they played in either. That would tend to make me believe the BIG 10 doesn't want to send Purdue to the Holiday bowl either. it would appear the BIG 10 has a flip of Tax Slayer gator bowl and music city bowl in that they'd only play in one of the two games, and the gator bowl is preferred. he has UW going to the citrus and MSU the outback, and PSU to pinstripe. and Iowa and northwestern going to better bowls than Purdue.

he also hinted that even if Purdue were to win out and go 8-4, because of the drawing power and name of other schools like PSU and UW, Purdue would still probably not be selected for one of the major New Years Day bowls like the outback, citrus or gator bowl. it is possible for a team with a lesser record to go to a better bowl game.

on a positive note, he indicated Purdue's drawing power was about the same as MSU.

I guess Purdue will just have to show the world and win out and see what happens.

these are not my thoughts. they are jerry palm's. there's a link to them on the home page. he has been fairly accurate in the past, although many here may have higher hopes and expectations than he currently has.

We've had good success against Iowa. And it was a home game. Our history against UW has not been good.
Wisky lost HornyToad to another concussion Saturday. I bet they sit him the rest of the year. UW run/pass ratio will now be 90/10. Load the box, make them beat you through the air.

I've been saying this since the schedule was announced, conference games are so important, why start the season w/ all the rust vs a conference foe and that goes for both teams too, not saying this because we lost that game.

True, boy northwestern returned a ton of players, plays disciplined, and had the longest winning streak in football going in. Definitely a better situation than us who was playing with a young defense.

Great post.If Purdue finishes 8 and 4 all of our fans should be ecstatic. Is Iowa really a 10 point pick over the Wildcats? That surprises me.

Some other projections:

CBS - Quick Lane (Detroit) vs Georgia Tech
SBN - Gator (Jax) vs South Carolina
Sporting News - Holiday (San Diego) vs Washington
ESPN 1 - PinStripe (NY) vs Virginia
ESPN 2 - Gator vs South Carolina
Sports Illustrated - Holiday vs Arizona State

There are a couple more sources that haven't updated yet.

For recruiting purposes the gator or outback would be nice! For exposure a New Years bowl would be nice. And for a big win the bowl games in Detroit and Texas would be nice. I'm not a fan of playing PAC 12 teams or playing on the west coast

I think our reach bowl would be the Citrus Bowl, but we need a lot more to happen than just winning out. Outback is probably a more reasonable stretch bowl in particular since there are a few teams that would not be eligible this year due to playing in past (Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Northwestern). If we end up winning 2 of 3 for 7 Big 10 wins I would hope for Gator Bowl (Penn State and Iowa are not eligible). I don't see us going any lower though unless we finish 6-6.

I can't consider playing in Detroit or New York in late Dec or early Jan a reward.

New York, maybe because you can always find something to do there, but definitely not Detroit. I'd be very happy with the Gator or Outback and would have at the beginning of the season. Considering we started 0-3 and may have the chance for one of these bowls, I'm excited.

The pin stripe bowl is nice for the team because of the media coverage and it's in NYC. I saw PSU was predicted to go, so it doesn't want just any team. Detroit would be the pits, although it would present an opportunity to blow the other team away.

Last year I wanted Purdue to go to a bowl game where we had a good chance of winning rather than one of the bigger name bowls. I felt a win was more important to the program than appearing on New Year's Day and losing. That said, I'd love to see Purdue play in the Outback or Gator Bowl. I believe we are ready and could compete with the ranked teams! I'd really love to see Purdue in the top 25 by year's end.

This is really disappointing, but unfortunately Jerry Palm is probably one of the most reliable analysts. He is a Purdue grad and lives within an hour or so of Purdue so he is probably exposed to the excitement around the program. I could only see going to Detroit if we win only 1 game remaining and we cannot go to San Francisco since we already did. If we win 2 I think we still may end up there if we do not have anyone in the CFP and everyone gets bumped down one. But if we end up with a better record than Iowa I would like to think we get a better spot than them especially since they are not eligible for all bowls. I also hope we are ahead of Maryland which means we would only need to be out in front of Iowa, Wisconsin, PSU, or MSU to at least get the Pinstripe.

I have found over the years of following Jerry's opinions and analytics that he tends to do his best to NOT show bias towards Purdue. His mock brackets for the NCAA Tournament rarely have Purdue higher than the average. Same with football when and if they are relevant.

If we go 7-5 and only get to Detroit, would be a big disappointment. We're speculating the 7 wins but what isn't speculation is we've beaten Ohio State, Iowa and BC. Plus a national headline player in Rondale Moore

Just win out the regular season and see where the chips may fall. I cannot fathom Detroit. Have to believe Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU & PSU could easily have 1 more loss each before the season ends which could put us in either Holiday or Gator Bowl. Have a good showing, hopefully we can win, but play competitive overall. Progress is continuing.

If we win out and Wisc loses 2 more and is without their QB, I don't see how we wouldn't be ahead of them.

I think while not very highly thought of the bowl game in Texas might be nice. My prediction is still the PinStripe Bowl

You mean the one in Dallas (Servepro first responders?) Used to be Zaxbys, Dallas Football Classic, or Heart of Dallas Bowl. That one is so far down the list probalby will not get a Big 10 team (it did not last time). Would need 10 teams to qualify I believe (or 9 if we do not get a spot in the CFP). Never say never though as technically the Big 10 can have 12 teams qualify still if Indiana wins 2, Maryland wins 1, Illinois wins 2, Minny wins 2. But with all that they only way I see it happening is we finish 6-6 and no team in CFP.

Please please please send them to the Taxslayer Gator Bowl.

Saves me a ton on lodging and airfare.

Yup, that's the one. We can't go back to San Fran. Admittedly, it's really low on the list, but I like it better than going to Detroit.

West coast seemed to work out well last year

I think the Badgers drop their next two, so them in the Citrus seems to be a stretch

Would love to take Uber across the bridge and watch the Boilers play in the Gator Bowl!

There is no way, after the 0-3 start, that I could have even thought of bowling. 8-4 is a real possibility.

I think Illinois upsets Northwestern, so the Rose Bowl looks likely. The downside is the Rose Bowl location is not convenient for the Big Ten to go practice and this gives the home team a big advantage.
