Until this season Crean hadn't done anything at IU that Painter hadn't already done at Purdue. When you factor in the amount of 5 star talent Crean has had thanks to the profile of IU, I would imagine Painter would have added another B1G coach of the year to the 3 he already has, not to mention making it past the sweet 16.
But spin however you like. It seems to be working for you.
And if Robbie Hummel didn't tear his ACL Purdue would have won a national championship, right? Hypotheticals prove nothing. Painter had plenty of talent last year and underperformed. He usually has quite a bit of talent, actually. He had 5 4 star kids in 2013-2014 when he ended up last in the B1G. He had 4 4 stars and a 5 star last year. The talent disparity between IU and Purdue isn't as large as you seem to think it is. And even if it was, why should Crean be penalized for that? Recruiting is a part of coaching. If you want to spin it that Painter should be given a handicap for the recruiting disadvantage at Purdue you're welcome to. But in the real world results are the only thing people look at.
