What has to happen to lock in a 3 seed?

10- 12 RPI is mathematically a 3 seed. Tell me, given Purdue rep and the national perception of B1G being down this year, why would we get overseeded?

I don't think Purdue would get that, but to ZZ's point, a stellar top 50 or top 25 RPI w/l record, combined with league titles (reg season and tournament), no bad losses, and coming in on a hot streak "might" be an argument if it were close between a couple of other teams on that line. To me, the deciding factor against Purdue is not just that the conference is slightly down this year, but that although Purdue would (and does) have some good wins, there isn't that top-notch victory to hang your hat on.

Forget 2 seed vs 3 seed vs 4 seed. The biggest advantage we could get for the first two rounds is playing in Indy. To do that we need to be seeded ahead of all but one of Louisville, Kentucky, Cindy, and Butler. We are behind UL barring a miracle, and neck and neck with Butler, and slightly ahead of Cincy. Getting ahead of UK will be the tricky part.

maybe if we're borderline like #8 - #10, and there's someone ahead of them that isn't convincing.

If anyone wants to use history as a guide, here is the lowest RPI team (on selection Sunday) for each of the top 4 seed lines in each of the last 5 tournaments:

Seed - Lowest RPI ranked team in 2016, in 2015, in 2014, in 2013, in 2012
1 seed - 5, 6, 8, 8, 4
2 seed - 12, 8, 11, 11, 10
3 seed - 18, 18, 16, 13, 15
4 seed - 23, 25, 19, 20, 23

For games through Feb 19, the NCAA report has Purdue at RPI #21.

That's a big part of why I expect Purdue ends up in Milwaukee and Louisville/Kentucky end up in Indianapolis.....but stranger things have happened.

this information seems incorrect.

Your post makes it so clear how much RPI plays a roll. And watching us drop to 21 while winning games is infuriating. So many questions about the current RPI ranking.

Florida at #10?
8 loss Virginia at #15?
9 loss Xavier at #18?
Maryland above us?
Purdue drops to #21 after winning last 5

So bizarre

So Gonzaga is a low 2 or high 3 seed?
when have i ever said they just take RPI and turn it to your seed. With Gonzaga having been #1 in the human polls all year, dropping them down to 2 or 3 seed will be very hard to justify. But I won't be shocked if they are one of the lowest 1 seeds rather than being overall #1 because of their relatively low RPI

There RPI is 9 and more than likely it will fall with some really bad teams coming up. They could come in around an 11-12 RPI.

but if they don't lose any game all year and remain #1 in the poll, they will get a low 1 seed. if they drop even 1 game, don't be surprised to see them drop to a 2 seed or even a 3. The point RPI matters >> human polls/kenpom/sagarin.

To estimate your seed, start with your RPI, if it matches up your human polls. you probably end up around that seed +/-1. you don't get overseeded/underseeded by more than 1 unless there are compelling reasons. e.g only undefeated team in college bb, and #1 for several weeks is not going to be a 3 seed even if that's what their RPI says or somebody else took your seed and now you are bumped down, the committee is trying to balance pots/locations/conferences

Still don't get the love for Florida. They have only beat one ranked team this year and I think they just lost their starting center. The SEC is even worse than the BIG. I expect them to drop below Purdue.
(then #24) Florida absolutedly shredded (then #8) UK on a nationally televised Saturday game, and that got them everyone's attention. Since then they've won four more in a row. But tonight they take on a tough South Carolina team in Gainesville and this weekend they go to Rupp where the Wildcats are sure to have revenge on their minds. This week will determine if FL stays ahead of us, or returns to a more likely spot just behind the Boilermakers.

Better just win next 5 minutes or it is all mute
