The original definition of the word "excellence" is not "to excel in criminal activity". You're right though, they could be guilty as charged in the near future.

Specifically, for those who want to know, ESPN is following up a Justice Department investigation into sexual assault. The Federal one didn't focus on athletes alone and ESPN is attempt to see if athletes were treated differently from other students. MSU was already ordered to hand over the data, but then they redacted all the names making what they handed over worthless. The Appeals Court sided with ESPN and ruled that those who were suspects were not entitled to privacy, but upheld the redaction of witness and victim names.

This particular one is MSU specific I think. But ESPN has for the last 2 or 3 years been actively investigating sexual harassment by athletes at various Universities.

That's one part but ESPN isnt limiting it to just sexual offenses.
