Welcome to the January 20th, 2023 edition of the "Weekly Upload" as @Owlbird helped me name a few weeks ago. The Purdue Football Staff has been busy and will host a plethora of visitors this weekend as they are looking toward the 2024 class. The Football staff is now mostly complete as all assistant coach jobs are filled, and basketball stays perfect on the road.
Please feel free to ask questions and discuss - I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.
With the official hiring of Running Back Coach Lamar Conard, who was the first walk-on that Coach Tiller ever gave a scholarship to, the Purdue staff is now complete. Here is what I have for the staff..
Head Coach: Ryan Walters
Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks: Graham Harrell
Defensive Coordinator/Inside Linebackers: Kevin Kane
Running Backs: Lamar Conard
Wide Receivers: Cory Patterson
Tight Ends: Seth Doege
Offensive Line: Matt Mattox
Defensive Line: Brick Haley
Outside Linebackers: Joe Dineen
Safeties: Grant O’Brien
Cornerbacks: Sam Carter
Special Teams Coordinator: TBD
Strength & Conditioning: Kiero Small
Offensive Quality Control: Justin Sinz
Defensive Quality Control: T.J. McCollum
With that in mind, Special Teams can be an assistant already on staff, Seth Doege has experience with running special teams. But it can also be someone in an analyst role, which is still being filled out by Coach Walters.
The elder statesmen of the staff are Brick Haley and Lamar Conard who are 54 and 45. Purdue, I think, will have the youngest staff in the Big Ten and maybe all of college football. As I have mentioned before, there are pros and cons to that, usually, it helps with recruiting, though.
This week alone Purdue has offered over 50 players for the 2024 class, around a dozen for the 2025 class, and even an offer for the 2026 class.
While they are looking ahead with obvious attention to a very important 2024 class, Walters’ first full class as a head coach, they are still working on a few 2023 prospects.
The pursuit of Kendrick Gilbert, the Cathedral Defensive Lineman has remained constant and it is thought that he will be signing with Purdue on February 1st. The same goes for TE prospect George Burhenn. Louisville signed a 4-star tight end and I believe that has helped the new staff with retaining George.
A BIG 2023 prospect will be on campus this weekend with offensive tackle, Chrisdasson Saint-Jean coming to campus. He is a 6-7, 305-pound lineman. The Purdue staff has visited him and it is believed that there is legitimate interest between both parties. Coach Harrell recruited him when he was at West Virginia.
2024 in-state wide receivers, Mylan Graham, Nitro Tuggle, and Tae Johnson have all become priorities for the 2024 class - expect them to be on campus this weekend for a Junior Visit. Graham will be a tough get, he is ranked the 38th-best player in the 2024 class. Purdue will have to fight off Ohio State for him, it appears. Tae Johnson from Fort Wayne is the 53rd-ranked player in the 2024 class and has offers from just about everyone as well - Purdue visited the day recruiting opened back up. Nitro Tuggle is currently unranked, but the in-state athlete has seen his recruiting pick up. Purdue is his 3rd Big Ten offer, as they offered early this week.
Junior College Offense Tackle, Issiah Walker will be on campus this weekend as well, he is a sought-after Junior College Prospect. Jace did a great interview with Issiah early this week.
C.J. Hibbler will also be on campus this weekend, he is a 2024 prospect, who currently does not have an offer from Purdue, but the new coaching staff is taking a serious look at. He is a smaller back but would be someone that can catch the ball out of the backfield and is elusive in open space.
Look for Purdue to stay active in the transfer portal for cornerback help as well. It is a pretty thin position and there is a chance it gets thinner if Tee Denson cannot return to football. Whether it is a grad transfer or younger, Purdue needs a body or three there for the upcoming season.
The Purdue Boilermakers have improved to 18-1 on the season after another win on the road at Minnesota. Purdue is now 6-0 on the road in Big Ten Play. It pains me to say our only loss was at Mackey Arena to that gritty Rutgers team.
With Michigan’s loss last night, Purdue is also two games up in the loss column on anyone else for the regular season Big Ten Championship Race. The Big Ten is not very good this year, I think and a very talented Purdue team has the ability to take advantage of this season and win their 25th Big Ten Championship.
Coach Painter continues his pursuit of the top 5 prospect, Flory Bidunga. He and the staff are putting a real effort towards Bidunga, so, he obviously sees him as a priority, Coach Painter would not waste his time otherwise. It may be an uphill climb to get him to Purdue, but you have to think with the success of Zach Edey, any big man would be willing to listen to Coach Painter.
Coach Painter is also looking at 2024 Guards, Tyler Perry and Gicarri Harris - even with Benter and Catchings already committed. It is believed that Catchings could grow two or three more inches and evolve into a stretch 4 type of player.
The other center that Coach Painter has his eyes on for 2024 is Raleigh Burgess, who just broke his leg and is out for an extended amount of time. He will probably be out until at least late summer AAU - which could sway off some suitors for his college commitment.
Please feel free to ask questions and discuss - I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.
