Yesterday lots of people were upset that Purdue lost to cincy. These are the same people that picked Purdue to win 5 or 6 games. I think it's time for us to be realistic.

Purdue is not a good football team. They have a bad defense. Realistically you should only expect this team to win 2 or 3 games. They are just not good folks.

I think that once hazell is fired the rebuilding process can begin. It is what it is.

Yes, many of us picked PU to win 2 or 3 games this year, with the expectation that the team is not good and DH2 will have to be fired at the end of the year.

But most of us were hoping for a pleasant surprise this season.

Yesterday confirmed that our expectations were correct -- and we weren't happy about being right because we're PU fans, and we really wanted to be wrong about this team.

So folks being upset yesterday reflects dashed hopes, not a failure to be realistic in the first place.

Offense was miles better in that it moved the ball at least.

Problem was the D was a sieve and Blough threw 5 picks, 4 really being on him.

Strategy was a big issue. Not playing to "run up the score" is a giant mistake. We are going to have to score at will if we want to win...other teams will do the same to us. Punting at any point on 4th and 5 or less on the other teams side of the field should not be an option the rest of the year.

That could go a long way in helping DH save his job.

He doesn't have the balls to do it though. He clearly screwed up when we punted on 4th and 5 inside the Cincy 40, down 2 scores in the second half. I don't know who Hazell thought the D was going to stop

The bye week actually came at a great time. I think the offense just needs to make a few adjustments. If Blough keeps growing as a passer and keeps the ball now instead of throwing high on some mid-field throws, I think the offense as a whole can be a competent decent team. The O-line appears to be better at pass blocking. I think Malone is an intelligent man and will shift the focus more toward throwing to open up the running game for Markell or who ever is back there.
The defense though....I have no clue if this will get fixed. I sincerely hope Els is not a Shoop-lite on defense and can actually FIX problems. He seems dead set on staying with his system and not putting in wrinkles to adjust to anything that the offense does. Well if that continues this defense might end up the worst of the DH2 era which is saying something...there is some talent in the front 7 but its not getting utilized b/c of the new scheme. Here is hoping.
I actually do think the team beats Nevada but after that I don't know who else except Northwestern. The defense must improve or it will be a 2 or 3 win at most season.

I predicted 2-3 wins and knew that Cincy would win easily. Still I watched the entire game and stewed. Is there a clinical diagnosis for Purdue fans?

I was hoping the team was better. But if I were honest with myself, I probably thought the chances for success rested as much on a comparably lighter schedule this year than in the past three.

What I saw Saturday was discouraging on so many levels. Purdue just can't compete with anybody in FBS right now. The players don't know how to win, and DH2 clearly lacks the ability to teach them how to win.

The Cinncy game looked all the part of the MSU game last year. The opposing team clearly saw they were the better team and when they got up big, simply coasted. You could see in the demeanor of the Cinncy players. The only reason Purdue has ever competed with the opposing team is if we are playing what should be a vastly weaker program (Western Michigan, Marshall, CMU) or a team simply takes their foot off the pedal (MSU, Cinncy). When the program is getting blown out by the likes of Illinois, IU, and Cinncy...there are clear deficits to the HC. No B1G team should be getting blasted by anyone on a consistent basis.

No B1G team should be getting blasted like this, unless that B1G team has had Burke as an AD, Cordova recently as a Prez, and a BOT that was asleep at the switch. And I'll add, an alum/fan base that let them milk football dry w/o raising ... H_E_L_L!

Even now, the biggest challenge ahead for PU football comes down to whether we have enough fans left, to raise enough hell, to wake up the sleepy, backwards, attitude PU leadership shows toward revenue sports.

If the new AD is going to fix the football program, might as well start today and get a new coach on board for next year, to help recruiting and give the fan base some hope, otherwise who will go to the games, except the die hards who pray for an upset.

You can do enough in recruiting in November if a head coach is named at that point. The class isn't going to get much worse than it already is but with what appears to be a number of coaches leaving this season, a number of recruits are going to be playing musical chairs. The program's best shot is to hire a head coach who is very strong in recruiting to get some guys that hadn't previously viewed Purdue as a destination but will under that new coach and with the new football facilities either in place or being put in place.

Exactly, we are going to have to score A LOT if we are going to win more than 1 or 2 games this year. The defense simply isn't good enough. But when the offense only scores 7 points going into the 4th quarter.... you have a problem.

Good news is that they did move the ball really well, and not many 3 and outs. That was a refreshing change. But now we gotta finish those drives.

If this was the team led by Brees with high caliber players on the outside and an offensive line that had multiple NFL players on it, I would be confident in the team outscoring their opponents. Unfortunately, Brees (or his second coming) aren't on campus right now, the WR's aren't good enough to make plays and create separation, and the offensive line can't create enough space for our RB's to eat clock at all.

Now, of those things, which can be corrected? The QB is who he is and probably won't turn the ball over 5 times again (hopefully) and the WR's aren't suddenly going to get better at being WR's. It comes down to OL play and creating enough of a seam for the RB's to churn out yards that won't allow a defense to just drop 7 or 8 men in to coverage every down.

Young and Yancey are pretty good receivers. Definitely need others to step up tho. This offense has potential to score points for sure but will it be enough.

Also Cincinnati is better than most are giving them credit for. We fell for the struggled in game 1 against an FCS team so they must suck trap. This team has one a shit ton the last couple years. Our schedule is weak and we could sneak of some wins but regardless, barring a miracle a change will happen. 5 wins right now is the ceiling for this team. There will not be a bowl game. Cincy was a must win game for that to happen

What 69 forgot to say is that this is a slow football team. Cincinnati and what follows will simply run away from us and a round us. The DEs and outside LBs better get in shape because they are coming after us on the corners.

Fire Hazell now! Lets get on with it. Show some courage.

Some of us on this board have been. It hasn't gotten us anywhere though. People have lost hope. At least Purdue has a new AD now and his main job is to fix the football situation.

Our current roster is full of kids that are not B1G quality. It is certainly not our players fault that they received an offer from from Purdue. They're obviously going to choose Purdue over the other offers they had from smaller schools. That's on our staff, not on our players. I will always support our kids but I'm done with DH2. Good guy but he's in way over his head. BTFU

The issue is more about coaches strategy IMO. When we punted down 2 score late in the 3rd on 4th and 5 in their 36...we were throwing in the towel.

Not in Hazell's mind...but in the minds of anybody there watching the game. It was clear we weren't going to stop them...so why give them the ball back when we don't have to?

Because DH2 is a position coach and has no clue about everything else going on the field as evidenced by his lack of clock management skills. Seriously if you can manage the clock how can you be HC FFS? I wouldn't be surprised at some point to find out his pressers were all scripted, and written by Burke. I don't even think that the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Lion and Dorothy could get the Wizard to find this guy a brain.
