I saw a post that said ESPN thinks Purdue will be one of the biggest disappointments this year. it's kind of hard to believe the same network would give praise to our players and then predict us to be one of the biggest disappointments. I'm not exactly sure what they mean by disappointment. Are they trying to say we have the talent, but won't be able to put it together?

What would be your disappointment level for this team ? that's a little different than your hopes and your predictions. I believe we all hope Purdue makes the final 4. and the majority of posters have predicted we'll make the sweet 16. But, what would you consider as a big disappointment, or disappointing year?

My personal thoughts would be I will be very disappointed if:
Purdue doesn't win 20+ games, and doesn't make the sweet 16. To me, that would be my definition of Purdue being a big disappointment. I believe even with injuries to key players, we should be able to at least reach those milestones.

I would agree with that. s16 and i'll raise to 22 wins. we have a tough non-conf schedule so we'll prob take a few losses there. but i think we can win some games maybe we shouldn't. sweet 16 is very do-able, yet match ups are key and an early round loss can get the best of teams.

we have an interesting team because we can be a nightmare match up for most teams, yet i think we are vulnerable against athletic, quick strong bigs. yet, we have a very skilled team that, when on, can shoot our way to a win.

i think we will be an exciting team to watch and i think we will lose a couple games that will be frustrating. that said, i think we have a very successful season and hope for some favorable match ups in the ncaa tourney - would like to avoid another close upset in the early round.

I always have major disappointment when they end the season with a loss, no matter how good or bad the season was. I always think they could go farther.

But my biggest disappointment will be having to switch the channel to an ESPN station, which will only happen when they are broadcasting a Purdue game.

Andy, I believe you should wait until mid season. And you will hear the guys at ESPN bowing down to Purdue and Dickie V saying I knew this was going to be a special team from the start. the guys at ESPN can change their spin for a team on a dime, and they will never apologize or even admit their preseason hype. Whoever is undefeated will be the greatest team in the history of college basketball until they lose.

One of my biggest complaints with ESPN is that the games have become vehicles to show off the announcers and analysts. They get too much camera time, spend too much time talking over the action on the screen, and don't do their homework on the teams and players. They think we tune in to watch their hired personalities.

We play 30-31 regular season games this year depending on Battle 4 Atlantis and I am expecting Purdue to be a 25 win team this year. I would be disappointed if we don't win at least 23 games and finish in the Sweet 16 or better. I think match ups in the tourney could be key and agree that we could be some what vulnerable against big, quick, athletic teams.

Too early to tell but I think this team should win enough games to be at least a 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. Anything lower would be disappointing. As far as the NCAA tournament, I never quantify my expectations until I see our possible matchups.

Final 4, plain and simple. With the seniors we have and very good underclassman, anything less than a Final 4 bid will be a disappointment for me. I told y'all before, B1G championships are nice but it is way overdue for Purdue to reach the Final 4/Championship.

Are we the only team in the NCAA to have 4 seniors? Must be, since it takes 4 seniors to reach the FF according to some on here.

Yes, I want a FF too, but our underclassmen and seniors are not as talented as many of the teams we will face in getting to the FF. Being "overdue" got nothing to do with it, as Clint would say.

Well, don't won't to focus on negative possibilities but I would say not getting out of the first weekend of the NCAAs would be a major disappointment. I think this team has the talent and pieces to be very special - how special time will tell. With a little luck and perseverance I think we could get to the final four but right now all I know is I am glad college basketball is finally back! The off season is way too long!

Let me add this statement of the obvious. If everyone holds to form, the 17th ranked team in the country does not make the Sweet Sixteen, right? There are some very good basketball teams that will not get by the S16 barrier.

I only watch ESPN when Purdue is being telecast. Can't stand the network otherwise, for lots of reasons. I think this year's team will be very similar to last in terms of results. We should finish in the top 3 in the BIG, with an outside chance to win it. Unfortunately, I think the NCAA tournament will be a repeat of so many others.....Sweet 16 and out. Of the players who are going to get significant minutes this year, we have not upgraded our athleticism from last year. Two of our best athletes, Ewing and Wheeler are not going to see much action, particularly since Wheeler is scheduled to red shirt. That will kill us in the NCAA. Minus Biggie, we are the same team. We will miss him on the boards for sure. He could turn the ball over quite a bit, but the guy was a winner and a competitor. He wasn't afraid of the big moment or afraid to fail. CE also has that swag about him. I think for the most part we can compensate for CS numbers as a team, but the intangibles he provided will be more difficult.

I prefer not to judge a season on what they accomplish as much as I want to see improvement as the year goes on. We could win more games than last year and still not win the B1G, so that metric is flawed a bit as the conference has changed.

This team should be right there in the hunt for a title, conference tourney title, and a good run in the NCAA.

Put that on Vitale, Digger, and Bilas. Honestly, I can only stomach Bilas and he is really knowledgeable....Vitale and Digger need to go away.

If you can’t see the improved athleticism, you need to pay more attention to the game. Adding Haarms, Eastern, and Taylor is a huge bump in athleticism and I believe Cline took a step forward in that regard as well (he was guarding the ball up top on the point from SIUE to dictate matchups.

I think you assessment should be the baseline for Purdue every single season. Get to the S16 and see what can happen from there.

For this program to take the next step, Painter needs to reach an Elite 8 with this team. It's the most talented across the board he's had. We could win the BIG10 again and lose in the sweet 16 again and it will feel disappointing. This team has 3 legit future NBA prospects (Haarms, Carsen and Nojel) plus 3 guys who could have long term professional careers (D-league or Euro) if they want (Haas, Vince, and Dakota).
Looking ahead to next season, I think although it will be a very young team, it will be even more talented than this years team and with the 3 future potential NBA guys as your 3 main guys (unlike this year)....it might potentially have an even higher chance at a final 4.

Yeah, I mute the TV when those guys are on. But during the game, ESPN works so hard to promote their game announcers, it gets in the way of the game.

Bilas is a jerk and Vitale is one of the nicest guys ever. It amazes me that a team can have such high character and their guy fans have so little.

We will all find out how good this team is in a few weeks. We are playing some of the best teams in the country in the Battle for Atlantis Don't underestimate this team!
