We are on Big Ten Network

Purdue made their first four shots, but it's been all Illinois ever since. Turnovers, missed lay ups, questionable 3s, and Illinois is carving through Purdue's defense at will.

At the half, UILL 40, Purdue 19. Bostic, from Northwestern High School outside of Kokomo is killing us, but at least she hit a ceiling after getting 14 points in 12 minutes.

Starters for this game as CKG keeps just throwing players out there and praying they might gel: McCarthy, Bass, Collier, Lombard and Jones.

Jones and Collier only starters to score: with 7 and 5 points. Puryear has 4 off the bench and Swanson has 3.

Puryear starting second half for Bass. Somehow we rotated on defense to end up with Jones on Bostic... you can all guess how that went. Good Grief.

64-31 Illinois with just over 4 minutes left.

This isn't UCLA or South Carolina. Just a normal B1G road game.

The worst thing about how UILL is killing us is they are without Cook and Dolan, their 4th and 5th leading scorers for the season. And they are still doubling us up.............

Maybe even worse though about this beat down is UILL pulled their starters early and has been playing pretty much the end of the bench all 4th quarter and are still pulling away from us. THAT is the difference in coaching, UILL's 12th-15th players are better than our starters.

Final 74-38, we can't even break 40 points this game... This is utterly disgusting.

Holy cow! Just now home and checking in. What the heck?? 74-38? What on earth has happened to this team - I mean wasn’t the last game less than 50 points? Just shaking my head….
Katie Gearlds has happened. Another new game, another new starting lineup and altered substitution patterns. Its impossible for most of these players to get into a rhythm playing when they don't know from game to game if they will play and how much. Its getting to the point where you have to question if she has lost this team.

In other bad news from this game, Poole went down hard and was carried off the floor holding her right ankle. She did not return.

Another game, another blowout.

Negatives -

Mccarthy - played better in the 4th vs subs but had 4 TO's. IMO, she has a very long way to go to be decent player for this team and league. Post game isn't there, looks like she's stuck in mud when posting up, which leads to turnovers most the time.

Lombard - 1-10, 2 TO's. Believe she airballed 2 of her three point shots.

Swanson - 1-9, 2 TO's. Another underclassmen that has a long way to go to be a serviceable big ten player. At least she cares to play well, you can see she's frustrated.

Positives -

Puryear - 5-12, 10 points, 4 rebs. She moves alot better than Mccarthy, seems to know what she's going to do with the ball in posts up. She is more decisive. She also seems to be one of the few who really cares about winning/losing.

Jones - 4-6, 9 points, 5 assists. Again, the only player who can consistently create for others, was agressive. She should of had a few more assists but her teammates were bricking shots left and right. Only 2 TO's for her in 31 mins. Count her among the few who still cares out there(at least shows emotion, body language).

Reynolds - 5 rebs, no Turnovers. Didn't score, but I thought she had a little extra pep in her step. She moved with confidence, had a couple nice passes in the 2nd that Lombard couldn't finish, took a charge. Does a good job rebounding with her length from the guard spot. Get her some confidence and lets see what kind of player she could be. I wouldn't mind seeing her in some pick and rolls.

Final thoughts -

Spirits looked crushed. Yeah we're a terrible team, but there's not much defensive intensity, going through the motions on offense.

Maybe a 1 win big ten team?

The Bass for Layden switch in the starting Lineup was a little puzzling. Yeah Mckenna had 4 TO's last game but she's usually a good decision maker with the ball and imo, has been one of the few bright spots the last few games.

Per Carmin, Layden was battling illness the last few days, probably why Bass received the start.

Then don't play Layden at all and let her rest. But the person sitting on the end of our bench doesn't actually plan for more than then next two minutes of game time and fails to see the big picture on just about everything basketball.

Ehh I don't mind it, CKG probably thought Bass would be better prepared scout wise since she practiced and Layden didn't. Layden still played more, and needs as much experience as she can handle, sick or not.

I don't know how many of us saw Bass declining this much after seeing her against Maryland. Yeah we probably thought her numbers would dip a little in Big Ten play, but they've fallen off a cliff. You'd probably find her on a milk carton now.

I doubt it’s coaching because ckg

Purdue was due to lise one against Illinois. We’ve had their number for quite a while. And I doubt it’s coaching because this is the first time Green beats Gearlds since she came from Dayton to Illinois even though Illinois finished ahead of Purdue in the standings. They definitely have better players, as do every BIG school except for Northwestern, maybe.

You have to have hope to continue to watch them. After last night, I'm losing hope. I know we are all competitive and it is frustrating to us as fans but probably worse for the coaching staff and players. I just don't know any more if it is coaching or lack of talent. I like several of our players but maybe my talent evaluation isn't very good. With these kinds of results, how many will end up transferring and those signed asking out of their commitment. As one coach said years ago after a sub 500 season, "good news is we have everybody back and the bad news is we have everybody back". The way things are going I see maybe one win. Even after seeing some Northwestern scores, I'm not even sure of that. Who are our B10 talent on the roster? Do we have anyone coming in that will help us in the future? We just need something positive to happen for our team to feel good about themselves because I'm sure they feel terrible right now.

I did this in a different post, but its worth doing here since people are trying to say we have no talent.

Purdue under Gearlds has had 8 top 100 kids per ESPN/Hoopgurlz ratings, 4 have transferred out.

UMinn had had 5, one transferred out and one is out all season injured. They are roughly as talented as we are. They are 18-3 6-3 in big ten play.

UILL has had 5, one transferred out, one is injured for the year since early December. They nearly doubled us up with their starters sitting out the 4th quarter.

MSU has had 3, one transferred out. They are hovering in the top third of the Big Ten.

IU has 5, anyone think we will be competitive with them?

It's not talent, we have the talent to be about 3-5 wins better than we are right now, but its poorly developed, poorly coached, and stuck in a poor offensive scheme.

For context, of the 4 top 100 girls that transferred out, 3 were never recruited by Gearlds.

Ra'shaya Kyle #36
Skye Williams #93
Lily Stoddard #87
Mary Ashley Stevenson #97

Kyle and Stevenson are the only two of note. Stoddard barely plays at Butler, I don't think Williams ever played a minute of college ball before retiring.

CKG Recruited Top 100 players -

Amiyah Reynolds #43
Rashunda Jones #79
Mary Ashley Stevenson #97
Jordyn Poole #57
Avery Gordon #58

CKG's has some young talent, but she hasn't shown much ability to develop it(Jones, Puryear, Layden have had some nice moments). Alot of growth needs to be shown next season.

I hope ckg doesn’t go to portal after the season and brings 4 or 5 seniors that are not good enough to move up in the standings. All that does is impede the development of the young talent while we have yet another losing season.

That's the golden question, do we have anyone coming in to help us? Avery Gordon and Kira Reynolds are solid players, I think the Dounwstra girl is actually a bit of a hidden gem, but to expect those 3 to turn around this program? Seems unlikely.

What are reasonable expectations for next season.. .500 record? NCAA tourney? WNIT?

Without knowing the full roster(next season) and seeing this year, I'd take a .500 record, give or take a few, and just more competitive in games. Show some player development.

Agreed, it feels like she will grab 1 at least.. I thought I read somewhere CKG wanted another HS recruit guard, couldn't land one, so they were just going to wait until the portal opens.

If I had to guess, CKG takes another guard and forward from the portal.

It was nice to see the underclassmen get most of the minutes in the 4th last night.

and don't forget Mila - wasn't she brought in by Gearlds? Another top 60-90 player who hasn't shown anything yet (and yes, I know she's injured this year).

With CKG as coach, 12 wins is about our ceiling. A .500 record doesn't seem likely ever under Gearlds. We are likely going to lose 2-4 players transferring out after this fiasco of a season unless there is a coaching change, so CKG will pick up the crack pipe once again and bring in 4-5 light talent portal kids yet again. Later, rinse, repeat.

Sit the portal players, let the freshmen and sophomores play. They've had their chances and they're not providing the spark or the leadership they were expected (hoped?) to bring. We all knew the portal acquisitions were head scratchers, so no one is surprised by the results. At this point, who cares if the 40 point losses become 50 point losses?

Gearlds, who boasted she had never had a losing season, and stated she "was born to coach Purdue" has a mountain to climb to get out of this mess. She's going to have to sit through YEARS of seasons just like this based on the recruiting for 25 and 26. I know Gordon and Reynolds are highly touted (but they're not top 20), and this is a downward spiral that will be very hard for her to turn around.

Michael, dreaming is still free, so dream on. For better or for worse, the way Purdue hires coaches CKG is it for at least the next 3 seasons. WBB is at best revenue neutral so not much incentive for the brass to make a move right now like they had to make with football. I think it is in Gearlds best interest to concentrate on developing the young players these next 3 seasons to see if she can turn the corner because her portal strategy is not working.

Dreaming is free, so is believing in the tooth fairy, but no one does once they are a rational person.

This is CKGs first year with a team of her construction. This is who she is a a coach. She has not shown any hints that she and her staff can develop talent that they get. Recruiting is in fact her only strength as a coach I can see. Roster construction is an F, player development is an F, game day coaching is a D at best, offensive and defensive schemes are an F. She is unlikely to develop those skills while trying to coach up a terrible team of her own construction.

If she gets years after this mess, there won't be anything left of this program to rebuild from. It will be a total wreck requiring someone like Dunn several years just to get back competitive.

I watched for 10 minutes, what a disaster and waste of time this was, Purdue looks like a poor high school team. I’ll be honest, no one looked good, next year will be just as bad if we’re expecting the returning girls to just all of a sudden get a ton better, they might improve a little, won’t be enough to win more than 4-5 Big Ten games. Time for a change, if not it just shows Purdue is out on women’s hoops. It will be rinse and repeat transfer wise, Coach will bring in 3-4 players from smaller schools that averaged 8-10 points on their teams, that won’t get you better.

Watched last night and failed to see any kind of offensive scheme. No one is cutting to the middle. All 5 players standing on the perimeter. In two periods we failed to score 10 points. Some of these players have talent but there seems to be no plan on how to use it. If this team wins another game this season, I will be surprised. Let me mention Ava Learn again, who transferred to Murray state and is averaging double figures and at least 7 double doubles. One that I miss!!

If I'm CKG, I'm taking ND off the schedule (believe it was just a 2 year agreement anyways) and making sure my Thanksgiving trip isn't against a top tier team. UK is locked in for another year.. I don't believe we'll pay to get out of that one. Rack up the non-conference wins like Minnesota, big ten is tough enough.

I'd be pretty disappointed if CKG brings in more than 2 transfers.. assuming our other players stay. I don't think we'll have this mass exodus of players.. it's not like we have some superstars waiting to burst if they join a new team.. still alot of benefits to being on a power 2 team compared to a mid major or Big east school. Winning isn't everything to players, although us fans would like it to be haha.

Are Harper and Smith still on the team? I realize this is women’s hoops and most don’t care but what happened to them?

Gearlds has far greater issues than just Notre Dame and Kentucky. When you're taking 30 point beatings from basically everyone, you're in deep trouble. Our average margin of loss in the Big is probably approaching 30 points per game. Winning isn't everything, but how much fun can it be to be get your butt kicked every game? We're 0-9, it doesn't look likely that we will rack up wins against anyone anytime soon.

CKG like her teacher before her averages 2-4 transfers out a year. After this cluster I see no reason not to expect some of these girls to be sick of looking pathetic and want to go somewhere they can actually receive competent coaching.
