We are literally going to have a brand new team

Everyone thought that IU got a lot of transfers last year. I think they had 48 to 49 transfers from the Portal.

Well, our team is going to top that, and it is going to be by a wide margin. I believe we are sitting at 54 to 55 transfers current coming in, and we are not done yet from what it seems.

This is going to be literally a brand new team. This is definitely going to be Odom's team. Walter's guys are pretty much erased. I cannot remember a Purdue football team going into a new season in the last 25 years where I didn't seem to know minimum of 75% of the team. I will be lucky to know 5% of this team.

Should be an interesting year coming up.

And that should be encouraging! We needed a new culture and leadership. And a new offensive and defensive scheme.

The sad part is the amount of portal activity that will probably happen next season. I bet we don’t loose as many. We will see how many of these guys are looking for money vs PT vs being bought into Odom’s vision.

I have to believe we will still see 30-35 transfers next year. In the meantime…we will enjoy the current team and upcoming season!!

Probably the hardest part of this fall for the coaches will be getting them to gel and have some sort of cohesiveness. I too am getting excited about the season. I don’t want to look at my posts from 2 years ago at this time, but I see some solid rated players on board. Maybe by the end of the season they’ll be very competitive. Glad game number 12 is a home game for the Bucket.

Does anyone have a good site for up to date team rosters? I checked 247 sports and they still had Anthrop on our scholarship breakdown, so just a little out of date

Right now I’m projecting 4-5 guys starting on offenseFrom last years team (Browne, Mockobee, Burnehm, Tanona, and maybe a WR) and 2-3 on defense (couple of DL, maybe a DB) so about 1/4-1/3 of our starters will be from last years team.

Looking at the transfers, many have more than just 1 year of eligibility so it’s not just a quick fix. And besides the expected transfers from UNLV, the transfers are coming mainly from SEC which would mean at one time they had talent and were coveted recruits.

He’s not building a Brohm type of team. But he could easily build a consistent 6-7 win team . While not a championship caliber team, the team could be a competitive team and bowl team.

I definitely like his emphasis on getting big men for the trenches. Offensive linemen don’t have to be fast. They just have to be able to protect the passer and create holes for running backs .

I also suspect with success, you will see fewer players leave and also fewer players arrive. It should be noted the vast majority of players that are transferring to Purdue are players the current coaches have recruited previously. So they have knowledge and experience with these players. They are not just random players in the portal. I suspect the coaching staff. Will concentrate on high school players with an eye to the portal to fill holes

What do you mean he isn't building a Brohm type team or a championship caliber team? Or you only referring to this season?

At this point, I will take serviceable players that will hustle and will be well coached.

He is placing a huge priority on signing lineman - big HUGE linemen! And a lot of his linemen are rated higher than his receivers and other skilled positions, and he really didn’t go searching for some 4/5 star qb. I suspect he will also run a lot more than previous teams. With a huge offensive line, he will run out the clock rather than running up the score. Look at uw and Iowa . They did fine with 3 star QBs and WRs because their big offensive line made it happen.

Wasn't really a stud QB to go get that is clearly better than Browne. Browne has shown a ton of potential, but yes, he wants to run the ball. He understands you have to run the ball to win games. Brohm didn't and it cost him a ton of wins.

Last year, IU brought in at least 10 guys from JMU who played a lot - that helped set the tone for that team.

by my quick count, Purdue brought in 15 players from UNLV - some starters. Getting guys that played for the new coaching staff is a big deal to help get the effort and expectations (although we manage them) set. Personally, I'm not a big fan of this kind of transfer status, but it is what it is and Purdue will benefit from it. 2 wins it better than 1.

After finishing top of the MW and going to a bowl game in 2023 he still had 50+ new players his second year at UNLV. He is big on accountability and even ran some guys out that wanted to stay. About half the transfers are seniors and he even had a couple transfer in December and leave after spring. He already has said his strategy and no the portal isn’t to fill holes he will still build his team with the portal and balance it with high school kids.

In today's world, no team is a new team. They're all used. Much like buying a used car, you hope you don't have a lemon when it's all said and done.
