I was just checking out the box scores & highlights from those games to try to distill what we need to do to get to a FF and, God willing, a NC. My conclusion is very simple: hit enough shots, including 3’s, that the inside-outside threat is real and must be attended by the opposing defense.
I will define “enough” as >38% from 3, which is our % for Duke and Gonzaga. The only 2 losses that don’t flip to wins if we had shot that well are IU at Ass Hall and Maryland (who were just a buzz saw that night).

And like last year, Painter then tightened the rotation, which some message board experts believe is required for success, by the laws of physics. And like last year, Purdue began to struggle. And we all know what happened last year.
After losing 4 of the last 6 games with the tight rotation, I am glad to see Painter playing his bench more. They are all very good players and they make scouting the team much more difficult.

CR....what was the refs like , were they calling fouls keeping the mugging on Edey down in your opion?
The blueprint for beating us is pretty simple, double Edey (foul if necessary), and hope our "shooters" miss from 3.

I'd like to see our guys go to the basket a lot more. Even if they miss there's a better chance for Edey to get the board on a shot closer to the rim than a 3 ball missed. Those missed 3s often clang far out and can lead to semi fast breaks.

Play all 9 players, like at Wisconsin, in the Big Dance and Purdue
will have a great shot of making it past the Sweet 16, and maybe more.
Waddell did some good things in Portland, too.
Shots include free throws. The 3 misses are annoying.
The FT misses are inexcusable and will get you tossed from any tournament situation.
Lets hope there's a finger firmly in the dike.
I want Morton as well as Newman going to the rim when shots aren’t open and just to change the way defenses play us.
It was nice to see Loyer going for 2s off of the dribble. I liked how Jenkins passed up 3s for pull up 2s off the dribble.
What we need is 5 guys (not the crappy burger joint) who can be creative to get a look and drop a shot.
Side note - B1G should use the tourney ball in our tourney. Give us a chance to get used to that awful ball.
I agree Choice, see Loyer doing this, Newman can't dribble well and Morton needs to though...supposedly he was a magician with the ball, he needs to show more range/diversity than missing 3's . In addition Mortons defense is slow against athletic guards, Newman is better.
Agree that Newman isn’t the best off the dribble but given the right set to give him the lane, he can do it. Maybe Newman becomes Mr March?
Yes. It was great to see Loyer finding a way to get closer to the basket.
Morton can definitely dribble closer to the basket as we've seen many times only to have him pass it right back out for a 3.
Changing course a bit, but while I'm thinking about it, I think offensively we are potentially better against more of the elite teams as they will probably elect to play us straight up (if not for anything else other than ego). Of course if we shoot 20% from 3 its really not going to matter.
Style of play and scouting. Teams like Duke and zaga don’t want a rock fight. They want a track meet where their athletes can get out and play.
Plus, every coach has 25 games worth of tape on Purdue. They know how to prepare defensively and attack offensively.

The biggest variable to me, Lenny. With that and Purdue maintaining an edge on the glass and a reasonable amount of turnovers - the team could navigate further than some think. They've been able to get stops when they needed them most of the time.
However, the second weekend is no certainty, IMO.
Waddell played significant minutes during the Gonzaga and Duke games too.

I think every team with basically double and triple Edey and make someone else beat them. It’s easier to take away a big and hope other guys are cold. Morton will get all the looks he wants.

In this thread surprisingly no one mentioned the constant trouble our guards have defending the high pick and roll. (the second IU game being the best example in my opinion.). Our guys try hard, but success has been difficult. But overall our defense is better than last year. Is it enough?
Don't know that it is constant, but with Zach being slower that presents a lot of challenges. Course if the offensive guards are smaller, or not as effective in the mid range game, not a worry on the three ball, or the screener is not much quicker than Zach...that problem diminishes some. IU had big guards with effective mid range game and a quick 5 man. It will always be a problem with Zach, but other teams may not present the match-up problems IU did IMO
12-26 46% in February and March. Best on team I think. Certainly better than Newman.
Good point. That’s probably around the time frame teams started intentionally doubling off of him. Some of our fans have an irrational dislike of him.
Newman definitely adds another dimension on defense which we saw the other night with his pick sixes. And I think he has the potential to be a really good three point shooter. So this isn’t a knock on him either.
Not the Achilles Heal you think. Hitting 3-pt at the best rate on the team, second on the team in assists. We need to stop thinking of him as the weak point on the team. He is not.
The loudest complainer makes a statement and all of the other complainers repeat it. Doesn't matter if it's true. Every year a player gets blamed, and this year it's Morton.
I think mechanics are pretty important given the "same set of circumstances" and Brandon's are much better than Ethan's. That said, it is hard to say if or when the circumstances are the same, but Brandon has had enough "open shots" that he should have made more...even "IF" he gets more attention on the perimeter. I have never really spent the time to see who has been on the court most the time with Brandon and how he personally has been defended. Brandon's ceiling is higher as far as defense, rebounding and what I believe but have no data to support at this time his perimeter shooting. He brings athleticism to the team. I give Ethan better ball handling, better passing and less WTF??? moments for me.

My point was while we are blaming Morton of being the Achilles Heel , that Jenkins and Newman could elevate their game , like Newman did the other night and stretch our bench depth and scoring to make us deeper....someone pointed out when we played Gonzaga and Duke we were going 10 deep....where a more narrow alignment we seem to shoot worse.
Yes. I was one of the people calling for a deep bench. I agree. It will be much harder to scout this team if every player is contributing to their strength.
