Villanova freshman ineligible

According to a Villanova release, under NCAA initial eligibility bylaws, “A prospective student-athlete must complete their initial eligibility requirements not later than the high school graduation date of his or her class. Despite graduating from high school in 2016 and presenting the same academic qualifications as an NCAA qualifier, the NCAA determined Omari’s status to be an academic redshirt.”

I think he was a fifth-year senior in high school....so because he didn't graduate with his "original" class, under NCAA rules, he must be an academic red-shirt his first year. I didn't realize this was a rule......I guess any senior taking summer classes to graduate high school would be in the same boat?

Wasn't there some talk this summer about an IU recruit not being on campus because he was finishing up requirements?

Can he go straight to the NBA after his redshirt season if he chooses to? If so, that could really be a blow for Nova.

It lessens their frontcourt depth, but I don't think it's going to affect them that much. Fordham transfer Eric Paschall (approx. 6'7", 250 lbs.), who led his former team in scoring in '14-'15, is a wide-body stretch-4 (can play spot minutes at the 5 as well) in a similar mold as former Villanova player JayVaughn Pinkston (similar to Kris Jenkins as well) and is expected to make an immediate impact for them. The Boilers are still going to have to really battle and play smart to beat them.

1. - All players, regardless of nationality, must be at least 19 years old during the calendar year of the draft.

2. - A player who completed basketball eligibility at a U.S. high school, regardless of nationality, must also be at least one year removed from the graduation of his high school class.

It's not going to affect them that much...? They're losing a 5* post presence and it won't effect them that much? They'll struggle more than just losing front court depth.

The reason Spellman is ineligible is he started his freshman year and then a few months into the school year he moved. He started in 8th grade at his new school. Once you start your freshman year you have 4 years to complete your core high school classes. He didn't complete these core classes in time to be eligible.

An NCAA source explained to ESPN.com that Spellman got caught up in what is referred to as the core course timetable limitation. By NCAA rule, once an athlete begins his freshman year of high school, he then has four years to complete his 16 core courses. Spellman did complete his coursework, but by dropping back to the eighth grade he essentially took longer than the allowable four years. Though he did not even finish a semester as a ninth-grader at Middletown, the time there counted and started his eligibility clock.

He hasn't played a single college game and many bigs get overrated by recruiting sites. They're still going to have Eric Paschall, Darryl Reynolds, Kris Jenkins, and freshman Dylan Painter to play regular minutes at the 4 or 5. Jenkins plays as a stretch 4 in their offense. Subtract Ryan Arcidiacono and Daniel Ochefu and add Phil Booth and Paschall to their starting lineup:

Villanova's Regular Starters:

1- Jalen Brunson (So.)
2-Booth (Jr.)
3-Josh Hart (Sr.)
4-Jenkins (Sr.)
5-Paschall (So.)

2016: Omari Spellman (Overall Rank - 19, Position Rank - 2)
2015:
5) Tyler Davis
4) Caleb Swanigan
3) Stephen Zimmerman
2) Diamond Stone
1) Skal Labissiere

2014:
5) Thomas Welsh
4) Goodluck Okonoboh
3) Myles Turner
2) Karl-Anthony Towns
1) Jahlil Okafor

Recruiting isn't an exact science but with the amount of big events they attend annually they're lists are good, borderline great, for what they do. The above lists are the top 5 centers for the previous two classes. Spellman would have started and played big minutes for Villanova this season. I'm sure they'll have a decent season because Jay Wright is a good coach but they'll struggle in the post with Omari out.

It's possible they won't be as strong in the paint this season but post-play wasn't one of their primary strengths last season either and they won the national title. The bottom-line is this is still going to be a tough game for the Boilers.

Spellman is a helluva talent but Nova is insanely loaded at the forward positions with Hart, Jenkins, Bridges and Paschall. They will ask Reynolds to defend and rebound in the pivot while Hart, Jenkins and Paschall take on more initiated offense in the frontcourt. All 3 of those guys are offensive whirlwinds.
