UCLA at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I have a dinner tonight at tip off so I'm going to need everyone to not talk about the game or spoil it til I get home.

Thanks!

Welp, I can see it now from the Maître d'.

"Sir, before we bring the dessert tray, I have a message from a Mr. Lenny.....I've also brought some antacid as he suggested."

UCLA has been one of the better teams in the conference in the past month, having won eight of its last 10 games. They did drop a home game recently to Minnesota and most recently knocked off Ohio State at home last Sunday, 69-61. Purdue has had a tough couple of weeks, dropping four straight games, three of those coming on the road, to fall out of contention for the conference regular season title. There's still plenty for the Boilers to play for in order to get things back on track and be better positioned for the post-season. Candidly though, they could just use a good solidly executed game from the team and start seeing the ball go in the basket better than the opponent, defend much more connected than in recent games, and generally start building some confidence.

UCLA has two players averaging double figures in points, led by Tyler Bilodeau, who is not a big scorer but is efficient. He has shot at least 50% in three of his past five games. He's putting up 13.9 pts and 4.4 rebounds per game. Eric Dailey Jr. scored 20 points against Ohio State. The sophomore guard has solid numbers, recording 11.6 PPG on 51% shooting. Sebastian Mack has scored 11 or more points in four of his past five performances. The sophomore guard is averaging 9.9 PPG, primarily coming off the bench. Kobe Johnson has scored double digits in four of his past five clashes. The senior guard is averaging 8.4 PPG.

UCLA is 28th overall in the KenPom ratings, 51st in offensive efficiency and 15th in defensive efficiency. UCLA is also one of the few opponents on its schedule playing at a slower pace. The Bruins are currently rated 310th in the adjusted tempo rating.

Purdue has slipped to 17th overall in the KenPom ratings, 11th in offensive efficiency and 49th in defensive efficiency. Adjusted tempo rating has the Boilers currently at 290th.

This is a good match-up and a little bit of a battle of contrasting styles - how well can Purdue's offense execute and compete against the Mick Cronin defense of UCLA? It really could be an entertaining battle. The frontcourt battle could be one of the better ones we see in the conference this season. Trey Kaufman-Renn up against Tyler Bilodeau and Aday Mara, who have both been playing well as of late. Arguably, Mara has been a key difference in UCLA’s recent run of success. If the Bruin big men can slow down TKR, UCLA's chances go up. Seemingly now a broken record, but TKR and also Caleb Furst must avoid foul trouble. If Matt Painter is forced to adjust his line-up and go small or deep into the front line, UCLA will likely make Purdue pay for that, unless someone unexpectedly steps up in a big way.

Braden Smith has an opprtunity to get things back on track and will look for opportunities to exploit UCLA’s stellar defense. Dylan Andrews and Skyy Clark will likely have the primary task of trying to slow down Smith. Purdue should have the advantage if Smith can get back to his more efficient ways and avoid the bad turnovers from the last couple of contests (which were on the road). The Bruins will definitely try to hamper things and force Purdue into some sloppy play - if they can do that and keep things relative in the front court, UCLA could certainly come out with a victory.

Biggest things for the Boilers is getting back to basics - avoid the turnovers, keep the opponent in front for good rebound balance to get an edge on the glass......get better connected on defense and play with poise, passion, and a purpose.....all hands-on-deck effort and enthusiasm. Being back at home on a Friday night should help with that.

Some thoughts from Matt Painter on the matchup:

"He [Mick Cronin]'s a good coach. They have a good system.....very aggressive, they're good on the basketball. They have a lot of interchangeable pieces - they can go smaller, and really get into you. They can go bigger...they can have quickness and size on the floor at the same time. More than anything, you have to be able to attack them with smarts, but you also have to be able to attack them without turning the basketball over. They lead our league in forcing the most turnovers, so I think that holds true for us more than anything."

"You expect mental toughness every game. That's what you have to have - mental and physical toughness......anytime you have the type of struggles we've had.....now you gotta respond to it....go out there and compete, you have to play better.....main thing for us is to go out there and be consistent in doing our jobs....if we don't, we get disconnected....and bad things happen when you have breakdowns."

For Purdue to execute the game plan better - "Stick to our rules....and then disrupt the passer; do a good job on the basketball when he becomes a passer and make it difficult for him.....and then also containing the dribble. If we can do a better job of keeping the ball out of the paint AND taking better care of the basketball, good things will happen for us."

It's another challenge against a good team likely to be in the NCAA Tournament field. Can the Boilers right the ship somewhat and get things back on track with a big win, or will the Bruins continue Purdue's slide?

We shall see, coming up in a few hours.

Boiler up, my friends.

I’ll be glad when Braden breaks Parkinson’s record so he can just play ball again.

Yes - three assists away....hopefully out of the way relatively early and settle him down for stretch run. You will definitely hear something from the crowd if/when it occurs.

Would obviously be better if accomplished in a victory - great milestone either way.

Hopefully some air got cleared and Purdue plays well. In a video with Bruce on the other site he was happy Braden would be the one to break it and hopes it is tonight. Bruce will not be there...Mount will I understand. As usual, no comments from me because they shut down the internet when the game is close to starting.

I shut it down after IU game. That was rough. Haven't watched a second of basketball this week or checked any scores.....

I'm ready to get that loss out of my system. Can't imagine how the guys feel. Win or lose, I think we see an inspired effort tonight.
