Twelve Minutes of the Louisville Game

Busy night last night, so I only got to see a combined twelve minutes of the game. Still...some thoughts:

1. We have to do an even better job of feeding the post. Dakota was absolutely ice last night for us, and there's no way we win without him, but he had one of the poor entries I saw, and it really hurt our momentum. Like I said, Dakota was awesome, but he and the rest of the team have to recognize Haas when he's open and make catchable feeds.

2. Much was made of Eastern's missed dunk and layup last night, but here's what I saw: a hard-nosed defender with a better-than-average understanding of weak-side positioning (relative to his age) and aggressive/hard-working ball-hawking skills (sheesh, that's a lot of hyphens!). If you were playing in front of hundreds of thousands of fans on national TV, you'd be nervous too. I don't worry about any botched FG attempts at all. I like the kid, and I like that Painter let him get some burn in a big-time situation.

3. I love Haarms. So will NBA scouts. I hope we have him for at least two years. Three or four would be even better.

4. Lastly, this board is pretty fascinating as a sociological experiment, as well as a study in how tone reveals true intent. After we had a rough two-day stretch, the board was filled with folks who'd been largely silent--grudgingly silent, I'd say--during our opening winning streak. When we lost, it was as though the barn doors had been blown off, and they emerged with pitchforks and bared teeth attacking Coach Painter, attacking players, attacking anyone who didn't revel in the gloomy shade of negativity. There were a few, like tjreese (Sorry if I misspelled that), who clearly want the team to succeed and who tried to inject a bit of reason. But it all leads me to point something out...

When you post and the tone of your posts reveals your intent. This is self-evident, but I'll say it anyway: This board has an extraordinarily nasty underbelly, one that does our team and our school no favors. Before you criticize--and yes, I can say this, because I live it--ask yourself if you'd say it to the person's face. Would you call a player garbage to his face? To his mom? His dad?

If you answered yes, you're either lying or you're an insufferable jerk. Neither one is a good way to be.

Thankfully, the majority of Purdue fans are supportive, through good times and bad.

Boiler Up.

100% true. My vote is that they are insufferable jerks.

What’s the saying about character...it’s revealed by what you do when no one is watching. The internet provides a shield of anonymity, so essentially, no one is watching.
If a person is consistently displaying a certain behavior on here. That’s probably who they really are.

Re:Haarms

The reasons we love him aren't top priorities for NBA teams right now. I think he scored just 4 points in this game. I'm ok with that when he has 5 blocks, a bunch of rebounds, a bunch of assists. But I wouldn't assume he will go to the NBA early is all I'm saying.

thank you for considering me reasonable and as you know there are others. It is way too easy to blame a coach...way too easy. Purdue was in a BAD spot before the budget, when the coaches left and the talent needed was missing. SInce then Purdue's play has increased substantially, but many still group Matt with Gene and retain their frustration grown during Gene's time and then fail to see the huge differences between the two.

Some teams zone and press and they see Matt not doing either and see him as stubborn...when in fact he sees more positives than negatives by not doing either...a whole philosophical difference. Generally though I think many just see it being years since Purdue got the media hype in a final four and see similarities in previous style and blame that...translating to the coach that values those similar traits.

Purdue does not have the talent over these years as some adn although a coach is very important in recruiting he is less important than all the other factors combined. Personally, I think Purdue is trending in a good way and see no reason why they can't continue to improve and with enough knocks on the door it will open...

Rim protectors who can rebound, pass, and handle are always intriguing to NBA types. Needs to get the jump shot squared away before he leaves tho. I think he stays 3 years.

The NBA will take players with an ability to block shots at an elite level...Haarms is that and more right now in his freshman year. Next year, the NBA will take notice as his minutes increase and the reliance on him inside likely boosts his numbers. If he can develop a more consistent jump shot....he is a guy who could realistically jump after his junior year, but he appears to be a guy who truly enjoys the college experience.

no reason why he cannot develop a shot and so it is "when" he develops it and "IF" this year...look out!

I think if CMP didn't think Haarms couldn't hit a nice 10-15 foot jumper consistently, I don't think he would be rotating him in at the 4 at some points. I think Haarms has that ability right now...just needs to get in to the flow of the game a bit more (kind of like Eastern missing some bunnies....more time in the game and later in the season and things will just click).

especially seeing him go 8 for 8 in the intra-squad game at Mackey

He does have the ability. He's really an extraordinary combination of skills, size, and motor. There's really no ceiling.

Which is why I made the NBA comment. The League drafts on potential, not necessarily on achievement, hence a player like Josh Hart from Villanova dropping so far in the draft despite being a complete stud, and a guy like Thon Maker getting picked in the top ten despite not having accomplished a lot (at that point).

The key here is size and projectability. It isn't even what Matt can do now (though I'd argue he can already do quite a lot); it's what NBA execs think he'll be able to do three years from now.

Being objective about it, the potential is scary. And that's a good thing for us, as long as he sticks around for a while.

Around 5:50 or so Matt confirms he can hit them and does in practice...look out once he gets in the groove https://purdue.rivals.com/news/goldandblack-com-video-matt-painter-on-maryland-more

Can we say very nervous Kip Jones in his freshman year standing all alone under the basket with the ball in his hand, looking around as is for a direction?

How about Tony Jones?

Things will work out with freshmen, just like you said!!

It was even worse in the stands on Tuesday. You wouldn't believe the negativity that was in the upper bowl around where I was sitting. There was at least 10 D1 level coaches up there giving their opinion on why our team sucked. It made the experience much less enjoyable. I'm not sure why people choose to take this path of being a fan.
I understand being critical or realistic in a conversational setting about the team, but when you are watching how is it enjoyable to be a jerk? It also hurts the experience for fellow fans. Everyone of the people spouting negativity completely shut up when Purdue took the lead. It's as if they reveled more in the failure than enjoying the success.
Seems very counterproductive to enjoying the experience, which is what sports is all about.

You just accurately described most of the members of this board that was quite loud the middle part of last week and have all but mostly disappeared after the Arizona and UL wins...I'm guessing they'll be back at the first opportunity they get.

The same people were offended because they felt they were being ridiculed when Purdue was 4-0 and someone started a TIC "Fire Painter!" thread. But when Purdue lost they appeared again, whining louder than ever. After 2 good wins, they have disappeared again.

I hear you. Purdue fans are great, but the grumpy old men in the fan base can make the Mackey experience far less enjoyable if you get stuck in a group of them. They seem to be in clusters and I’ve been to far more games there when the fans around me are great than not, but get stuck between 3-4 of those complainers and it gets tiresome.

"The prahblum there, Einstein, is you have to throw the bounce pass.....and why is that idiot yelling Move....I'm not in his way.....what a putz.

No Moron....if you paid attention rather than flappin your gums and looking at the cheerleaders, you'd see they should be running a zone.....that's the only way to go.....

Well....at least I can do something about it when I look, Mr. Softie....and these guys NEVER play zone.....I think you've been hitting into your father's stash....or lost all your marbles.

That's not what Ariel said last night, Mr. Moose.

Holy.......Moly!

Classic. Love these responses.

You know what else is kind of telling? Wins, for the relentlessly negative folk, are like insect repellant. They stay away from the board after wins, and they especially avoid threads about those games.

The title of this post had "Louisville" in it. That word, since it's associated with a win, has served as a sort of protective charm around the thread. In keeping with the Harry Potter analogy, that single word, with its positive connotations, is warding off anti-Purdue death eaters and making this thread a sanctuary.

Oh, of course, some obstinate snark monster will eventually wander in here and claim to have been following the thread all along, but that'll ring false. If he/she hasn't commented yet, he/she hasn't been here.

I think we're onto something. Insert a word with positive connotations into a thread, and the dissatisfied grumps will avoid it like a radioactive spill.
