PSU didn't do that with smoke and mirrors.
That's a very good team that is tourney bound and maybe wins the Big 10 and gets a High seed.
If they can play decently on the road.
Someone once told me that if you have a really good pg and center you can go a long way.
I think they were right.

years ago THAT was the key for many people ...get a good pg and 1. The other positions have a LOT of good people to fill in!

I saw them last year and was VERY impressed in how they turned the ball over against "some" big team, but Purdue had no trouble with their pressure. I think their 5 man is new this year...

My eyes also tell me that Purdue is likely a 4/5th place Big Ten team, I hope I’m wrong with that but this Boiler squad is flawed. If one of the Big 3 struggle it’s going to be difficult to win road Big Ten games.

PSU was good but they also had a lot of unforced turnovers — 16 overall (they average 12 with Baldwin avg 4). If they can keep it to 1/, they have a shot at top 3, but if it’s more, Not sure they can avg that and be in the top 4.

My eyes say PSU turns the ball over too much to be B10 elite.....and that's against Purdue who typically doesn't turn a team over

he's a transfer from N. Ill.

And if they are allowed to push and grab every time down the floor all year the sky is the limit to them!

My eyes say that's the best pg I've seen this year. And 4 scrappy and athletic defenders around him with an elite rim protector. as for the turnovers, that's a team starting FIVE NEW GUYS. (new to the TEAM from other schools, not to starting).
If they meld on offense this is a scary team come March.
Top 3. Maybe #1.

Penn State is a very good team, athletic and has superior guard play. The final score was not indicative of the their total domination of Purdue. Let's see how they do on the road in the BIG. They should get even better as they meld their new pieces together. Their coach is using the best attributes of his team very well. As for Purdue, life after Edey is a learning curve both offensively and defensively. They need a full fledged breakout from one of the trio of Heide, Colvin, or Harris to finish higher than fourth. I mean a breakout that is consistent, not a one game wonder.

That was my main complaint with Painter not going to the portal this year. There’s some holes that could have been filled.

He for sure needs to hit it in the offseason, at the least a quality big 4-5 position needs to be brought in. It could mean the difference in a good team or one that can go to a Final 4.

I think it’s hindsight 20/20 Tho. If DJ doesn’t go down, I don’t think it’s as big of a deal. Paint is loyal to his guys to a fault and no transfer guy was coming in to play a good amount of mins over who we have…or at least not have a guarantee to play and not be a featured guy.

I disagree. I don't think relying on DJ, who's not ready physically, was a good gamble.
I also think that it's the coaches job to constantly be looking to upgrade. Last year, we had a high volume shooter/scorer come in and become a really important piece of a FF team.
These guys know there's no guarantees and it's Painters job to win, not keep guys happy.

Which it extremely impressive for a non-basketball program.

I understand but it hasn’t been how paint has operated. And it’s a tough sell to some of these guys that want $$ and guaranteed playing time.

Agree. But with no space last year, next year is all that matters, and if a couple guys aren't found, that's coaching malpractice. This team can be upgraded at the 5 for sure. Availability of physicalality would help at several positions.

It’s early still. My gut says that retaining the guys who are with Purdue now will be the key. The current roster will grow, the freshmen will become much more confident sophomores, and I really believe that DJ will be a huge factor at the 5.

I cannot imagine DJ in that game. There were some big bullies playing very well.

But what if painter thinks it’s more important to be true to his word/take care of his guys? I think he believes he can do that and still win (not 100% agreeing with it). But that seems to be his philosophy for right now

Do you mean no space as in no scholies? If so, I think that's an error on Painter. In today's world, he should always have 2 scholies available for the portal.

True to what word? I think Painter probably tells his current guys the same thing he tells portal guys: You earn your starting spot and PT every week.

Yes. Exactly. He rewards guys who play hard, know his system, know where to be and who give Purdue the best chance to win. If they do that, they will play over transfers. Unless that transfer is the better option. Lance was a perfect example of all that, but even he was surprised he became a starter.

But that's different than being 'loyal' to his guys.
If Painter thinks he has a legit shot at NC next year, there's probably a couple of pieces he could upgrade. I think the most obvious is at the 2 and 4/5 (depending on what you consider TKR).

And again, it’s not how he’s operated.

Painters shown the willingness to go to the portal. He also probably knows exactly what he needs to have another FF team. Maybe he thinks he has that.
What i'm saying, is that if he thinks there's a position or two where he can upgrade, he should.

Lance was a very unique situation really because he was a very unique person (well, we all are). And what I mean by that is his work ethic, personality, determination and how good he was on the court I think helped move him to a starter.

It also is why I think all of Purdue gravitated towards him quickly.. the video of him on the court "dancing" with the crowd tells it all. Not all portal transfers are like that and Painter got lightning in a bottle really which supports your point.

He was the perfect fit and if anyone has a chance to listen to boiler ball podcast, Lance talks about his recruitment to Purdue. It’s good stuff.

nothing wrong with that if the upgrade is large enough to warrant an unknown person outside the actual skills. Not sure what the guard coming in brings...I think maybe well rounded good athlete????? Cox and Harris will make a jump and Burgess will improve as well. Plenty of time to let the hands be played out.
