Trump's Actions Speak Louder Than His Words

Written by the former President of Georgia, who is no fan of Putin, but knows how he operates very well.

He also highlights some of the feckless policies of Obama related to Russia.

What should Obama have done differently with respect to the annexation of Crimea? Why did his statements to the Ukraine - a non-NATO country by their own choice in 2010 - make any difference whatsoever? The article, and most of "your" opinions on the power the US wields in that region... how best to describe this... What if Putin tried to dictate our economic policies with Mexico?

The fact is, Russia is the hegemon in that Eurasian area. Trump isn't going to change that unless he wants to go to war over it. Obama knew that, and he chose to attempt diplomacy and economic pressure. Trump should also know this, and his only end is going to be diplomacy and economic pressure.

Yep, Russia annexed the Crimea under Obama. And just like the Russian invasion of Georgia under Bush, our response had this been carried out under Trump would've been to shake our finger, freeze some assets, and hope for the best... unless you think Trump was going to get involved in carrying out military strikes on behalf of the Ukraine (again, a non-NATO country by their own choice back in 2010!) against Russia.

But you've said time and again that Trump is different and won't practice policies that will get us into protracted, unwinnable wars... so... what then?
