Be Purdue's luck they would recruit that way and after they were recruited the rules would change again letting you guard on the perimeter, lengthening the shot clock and taking away the three ball. Seriously, the "fans" like this and so I think it is here to stay...individual, creative style where the little guys are supreme1's, 2's and 3's are where it is at...we have seen that quite often, a couple bigs for D and rebounding are all a team needs at each position...Speed..Speed...Speed and scoring 1-3 todays game.
As Bilas loves to say "freedom of movement". We're not going back to physical play and slow down basketball anymore than football is going back to ground and pound. Offense is where it's at.
You can have traditional bigs and win some during the regular season against lesser opponents. But when the tournament starts especially in later rounds you need athletic players that can score. Preferably in a variety of ways. Guards and wings, players that can create their own offense without needing someone to get them the ball is the key.
Another nice thing about these athletic guards and wings is they can play defense too!
You are right, quick D...our shooting guards were never open nor could they create off the dribble...leads to steals and transition points...like getting run over as we experiencedThe athletic player has more to work with to be a better defender. I actually think athleticism has the most potential on the defensive side...no skill is needed...strength and quickness all help greatly and if the player has a killer attitude... Back in the days when you could guard someone, Keady had some athletes moreso than skill..but had a mix. Keady negated a lot of talented bigs by playing physical inside like we saw last night...but that was pretty common back then
Tell it to Gonzaga.1's, 2's and 3's are where it is at...we have seen that quite often, a couple bigs for D and rebounding are all a team needs at each position...Speed..Speed...Speed and scoring 1-3 todays game.

As has always been Purdue's weakness...???Very true. As has always been Purdue's weakness in the tourney, we again got beat on the perimeter by better, quicker guards who could create, penetrate and find the open man.
Watching Spike try to bring the ball up against Mason was like watching a walkon against a starter.
We had an athletic big with JJ and he got handled by Sullinger, everyone said 'oh now we need to get a tradtional 5.' I wouldn't mind painter aiming for more length and quickness but I'm not ready to abandon what may be our best recruiting strength (development of big men and being a focal point of the offense). That said, I like our guys and I wouldn't count them out so quickly for next year with another year of polish under the belt. We should still be (at worst) a sweet 16 team next year without Biggie. Plus if Biggie's work ethic has really sparked a new direction for the guys moving forward we might be surprised with gains over the summer.
It is a joke what has happened to the game. First we take away coaching with the shot clock. Now that some coaching is gone, we make the game more equal by taking the most populous position due to size and enhance that area by not only giving 50% more for a basket, but not letting anyone guard them.It is in the hands of the zebras and rules committee to bring the game back to the ;power 4's and 5's. If they allow them the freedom of movement as they do the outside players they would be dominate. Outside of a few games in the tournament the college game is too much like the NBA and very few fans watching until the end unless it is their team playing...
I like Mathias, but P.J. isn't a good starting point guard and Edwards is young. Spike was a step down from Octeus and Hill.Seriously - Painter's first 5-6 years all people did was complain that we were undersized!
People love to complain and complain about whatever they can think of. Last year, people complained we couldn't shoot 3s. Fixed that, but now we hate our guards. What a joke...
Remember all the people begging for a guy like Bluiett? Check out his sweet stats tonight against Gonzaga.

The people that only care about baskets love the game, but it is so one dimensional. Hell, most refs can't even throw the ball up anymore. Clock is winding down and is a tied game with less than a minute and a defensive player makes a kick on a pass that was a nice defensive play...only to give a full clock to the offensive team and penalize teh player for attempting to guard someone...and not enough people even know what was lost...
yeah...15 second..my bad, but point remains. defense is penalized for good defense which was in context of my point. I want EVERY coach to coach his team the way he wants. This is perhaps a difference between fans and coaches..unless the coaches have an abundance of talent and then they like the rules. YOU are limited in what you can do...you are limited in the effectiveness of certain players. All of this was for a fan to get more scoring.Shot clock is not reset to full 30 seconds anymore. If there is more than 15 seconds on the clock it stays where it's at, less than 15 seconds it gets reset to 15. That rule was changed over 10 years ago.
I couldn't disagree more about the coaching being taken out of the game. I would argue we still have too much micro-managing by the coaches. Too many timeouts, coaches being out on the floor during play and the ever increasing press/TV coverage of coaches. How much more control do you want them to have?

I agree, although I must point out that Gonzaga has done OK with a very traditional five. But yes, there will be fewer and fewer going forward. I do think if you have good shooting, length, and agility at the other positions you can still make a old style big work. If he's a top ten type guy take him! It'll work out.1's, 2's and 3's are where it is at...we have seen that quite often, a couple bigs for D and rebounding are all a team needs at each position...Speed..Speed...Speed and scoring 1-3 todays game.
