I don’t think it’s that different. We have a consumer-based country who generally relies on lower income countries to do our manufacturing because we are doing higher level service work now. Can you explain how a trade deficit is bad or affects you or me?
Let’s look at an example to make sure we are on the same page. We have a 47% trade deficit with Madagascar mainly because we buy vanilla from them and can’t make it ourselves and they don’t have the money or the population to make up that deficit. Is Madagascar ripping us off? And can you explain how this deficit hurting you so much?
So with your logic, any country that we have a trade surplus with should be charging the US tariffs?

You keep asking if people are hoping the tariffs succeed or fail? Duh; everyone hopes that ever American policy succeeds.
But hoping these tariffs will succeed is like hoping that ingesting bleach will cure Covid, or hoping that Mexico will pay for a giant wall - Trump said it and while I suppose anything is possible, it's a flat-out stupid to believe so, and no educated expert will ever support that it's a good idea.
The best we can hope for? When (not 'if') the tariffs are undone, the residual damage to our economy will be minimal, and Trump will claim victory, stating that the trend is better.. now that he f-d things up. Again.
