Too young?

Purdue appears to be very young this year compared to other top teams, only having one senior and no Covid year guys. In comparison, Alabama has 4 guys taking their Covid year. A lot of other highly ranked schools have Covid year guys as well. Any thoughts on how that will impact us? Seems to be a huge negative for Purdue this year, but also should help Purdue greatly the following the year if they can manage to stay together. A lot of the teams will be hit pretty hard after relying on so many fifth year guys this year while Purdue basically just gets a year older.

Predicting Purdue will be competitive this year but back in the mix the following year.

Also, a toast to only having one more year of Covid players.

Braden Smith.
He is an experienced All B10 Jr now. He will make the young guys that get minutes look older in a hurry.

Physicality
It was reported @ least 4 returnees are in the weight room heavy this summer. Some who were plenty physical already.

TKR
Possibly could be 1st or 2nd team All B10. He is a crafty undersized post who always showed he can score in bunches.

Frosh
2 of these guys, Jacobson & Catchings have the potential to push for B10 FOY. Might be someone else, as the B10 has some great guys coming in, but these two have serious potential.

Harris
The frosh I am most excited about. The Genes. Smith can take more breaks now and won't have to log 35-38 minutes, with availability of Harris & Cox.

Size
Besides TKR & Furst, Purdue has two 7+ footers that Purdue's coaching staff knows how to use.

No. We are playing through Braden Smith who is a third year starter for us and Loyer will be a third year starter. TKR has 3 years with us as well. We have a lot of experience even without “senior” after their names.

How many teams in the ncaa have 220 combined starts on that team returning?

It's a mix of experience and youthful talent.

Getting Colvin and Heide minutes last season helped a lot. Both could start at some point. Obviously we have three juniors in Smith, Loyer and TKR.

So that's five relatively experienced guys right there.

Mix in another 3-5 talented frosh and Furst who is a senior and it's a fairly even mix.

I certainly don't expect Final Four from this next season but it's a team that could easily finish low double digits ranked and get a Sweet 16 run. But yeah, it's the following season where one expects a big run with a team filled with Srs Jr's and talented Sophs.

💯 itd be great if Purdue could get a 3-6 seed in the midwest regional…and get to the S16 in Indy….would be a great Purdue crowd there. And I’ll keep saying it (agreeing with you) it’s all about the following season (if we can keep everyone) with a Midwest regional in Chicago and the F4 in Indy.

I think Loyer is going to have to work his butt off to hold off Colvin. Kid just exudes determination to me.
Good, more competition = a better team. Loyers a huge competitor so I’m sure he is and I’m sure he’s heard allllll the noise. Him, Jacobsen and Catchings should be required to eat at every dining hall for each meal to make sure they’re consuming 10k+ calories a day😂

Hell - give them an all-night pass and hire an extra luncheon lady.

Age should never be used as an excuse. There have been many players who were only 19 years old and played on Olympic teams and also started and starred in the NBA. Nobody said LeBron or Kobe were too young! The Williams sisters won a lot of grand slams against older, more experienced players! Look at what Smith accomplished as a freshman and what Rondale Moore accomplished on the football field as a freshman. Talent rises to the top!

This is the key. Schools taking a lot of transfers will spend most of the season getting them to play together as a team. Purdue will be doing the same with the big freshman class. I like Purdue's core group of returnees to blend in the newcomers. And I like the coaching staff that will make it happen.

I think if Colvin and Heide both make the type of jump I anticipate with their athleticism and hops, it’s very likely to come at the expense of Loyers playing time. Especially if Catchings, Harris and Jacobsen are as some are billing them as being ready to play from the get go.

I can agree with this take. I believe Colvin will be competing with Loyer to start rather than starting at the 3 spot.

Obviously, Wole neglected to mention Shirley Temple, who was the biggest star in the world when he was in college and she was only five years old. Being young didn't stop her and it shouldn't be an excuse for Purdue!

I think you nailed this. I just noticed that Ryan Kalkbrenner, three-time Big East defensive player of the year is back for a fifth year. Good for guys like Ryan but ridiculous for college basketball. I'm with you, thankful that this is the last year for guys taking a COVID year.

I think Purdue will have a strong season and contend for a Big Ten title, but predict that they lose in the NCAAT to a team employing one or more COVID seniors.

I dont think this team is to young i think they can complete in the big ten and win the big ten purdue might be going 10 deep next year

You do know those “19 year olds” that can play in the nba or the Williams sisters who were phenomenal at a young age, aren’t the norm right? There’s a reason not many can compete against adults at a professional level at a young age.

The U18 USA men’s team just got handled at euro camp by 22 year olds…which is a 4-5 age gap, but the age difference there shouldn’t matter according to what you said right? Since the 17 year olds should be mature enough and somehow good enough to play guys who have 5 years experience in pro leagues? And therefore ready to play in the nba because there have been a very small sample size of players that were ready to play at that age, Is that correct?

I mean there are like 65-75 starter minutes that moved on (Edey, Gillis, Jones), so there will be enough time for 3 people without cutting into Loyer's playtime at all. If all those guys are good enough to eat Loyers minutes then we will be in a very good position, but Loyer starting alongside Heide, Colvin, Smith, and TKR isn't a bad lineup at all.

This team has plenty of experience on it. This won't be a team of completely 18-19 YO's like the US team. I also see alot of teams that are banking on transfers that do have experience, but will need to fit into their new teams system, which doesn't always work.

Agreed!

Wole just tends to think any 18-19 year old is ready for nba action/pro level since there small sample sizes of 18-19 year olds (who are very good and abnormal) that can compete against grown adults.
