Today is why Hazell will be back next year. The team has not given up on him, we have young playmakers on both sides of the ball, and we are showing slow but real improvement.

We are 1-4. How many feel good about that?

It might also be the reason why he isn't back. 3 years and we still don't have anything resembling a 2-minute offense drill. How do you go from 3 really good drives to that last one, with 2 timeouts and 3 minutes left on the clock?

We still have yet to beat a team from the FBS. How is that improvement? Keeping it close with a team that was clearly looking past us does not excuse the terrible play the rest of the season.

Give me a break. Hazell hasn't shown any coaching ability. With the right coach we would actually be winning these games instead of just being close.

Don't confuse them with facts - just go with the concept that "we're getting better".
Clearly after rolling to a 21-0 lead after 18 mins MSU went completely to sleep. Kudos to us for taking advantage - but that was not a good MSU team today

The one or two games where the team plays close but doesn't come thru at the end, yes Purdue has some good players, but until they quit shooting themselves in the foot, they will not win

It still makes me crazy in the head that Blough did not begin the season at QB. We might have won a few of these games if he had. He is still fighting nerves a bit.

How you play against "hyped" competition doesn't show anything. How you play against bad competition does.

We played MSU "tough" last year - then didn't win a game the rest of the year.

And quite frankly, I don't really care if the "team" has given up on him. Quite frankly, half of the team should feel lucky to be playing Big Ten football.

A coach should get 4 years unless it's a complete train wreck. It's not a trainwreck, hence he returns. I'm confused why people fail to understand that. Hope got four years, so will Hazell.

Are you serious?

Hope went to bowl games 2 of his 4 years. He won more games in 1 season than Hazell has in 2.5.

I'm not sure how you have 5 wins in 2.5 years and it's not considered a train wreck.

So, to be clear, how we play against the #2 team in the country on the road on their Homecoming doesn't matter? Sure. Makes sense.

I'm confident we will win 3 more games this year. I think if we win 2 more, he's still back.

Well, I watched the game with my emotions in neutral. I expected us to get mauled and we didn't. We went against the #2 team in the country at their field, on their homecoming. In fact we were within a hair's breath of winning. If that pass in the first half had been caught in the end zone, we just might have pulled this one out. We gave as good as we got, and played a good game from a discipline and play calling stand point. Our defense was reasonable against a very good offensive team, and our offense was surprising against a vaunted defense.

For those of you that do that comparison to Hope, it is time to get a new story. Hope won a few more games while he had Tiller's players. However, he failed to recruit anything resembling BIG players. Hazell had to start his tenure with players that were too small and too slow to be on the filed with the other BIG players. He needs time to bring in the right kids. He has had success recruiting, now those players need to work inside his system, gain experience, and learn to play at this level. He needs time to build this program up.

I think it is time to recognize the progress our team is making. Games are a binary decision, you either win or lose. However, to judge the condition of the program, you have to look at how the team plays and what they do on the field, win or lose. It is too simple to look only at the W/L column to make that judgement. ...But hey, it is just MHO.

First off, the response was to someone saying that Hazell has not "lost" the team. I'm saying if you should be able to "show up" to play a Big 10 opener against a good team.

Secondly, I said over and over prior to this game I didn't think MSU is that great. They have allowed points against bad teams and they have not scored a lot of points against bad teams. Their biggest margin of victory has been 20 points.

It's great we kept up in the second half when MSU probably wasn't overly focused and we took advantage of it. Great. But we did the same damn thing last year against MSU, people got all fired up and we lost the rest of our games that year.

We don't have the roughest schedule remaining. Minnesota and Illinois are both winnable games. Iowa and Wisconsin are alright, but nothing great. Winning one of these games doesn't mean anything. We need to see PROGRESS not schizo "oh we showed up and looked ok for 1 half" after one half of crapping the bed.

Well if we're going to gauge everything against one game then I'll take that pathetic Va tech game and say give him the boot.
MSU was sleep walking 5 mins into the 2nd qtr.
Believe it or ignore it

How many wins the balance of the year do you think we need to win for Hazell to be back? Personally I say 3. But I'm betting the number is 2. And I see enough to say he should get a 4th year. Our best players are freshmen and sophomores.

the reason he is coming back is because he is owed 6.6 million
This. The only constant in this whole mess is Burke trying to spend less money on the major sports and more on his swimmers. When he finally does spend, he throws millions at a MAC coach who had been making peanuts. Football is a mess until Burke leaves. Purdue will pay a heck of a price in terms of lost ticket revenue.

I see the improvement for sure. Coach Hazell has not "lost" this team by any measure. He doesn't appear to be the type of coach that loses moral in the locker room. I can't for the life of me understand how they couldn't see that Blough was the best choice from day one. But I digress. They have him now and are clearly better for the change. I think we win next week and beat the Illini moving forward. Would love to win the bucket and I think we can at home. I still say we must stay the course with Hazell. Starting over will just bury us deeper over time.

His Purdue record is what, 5-24 right now? I'm not an astronaut or engineer, but that is approximately a .166 (1/6) winning percentage, correct? And 2 of those wins were against Indiana State.

That's not a trainwreck?

On the flipside, you have Minnesota coming in next week, and they're flat awful. That will tell you a lot about where your program is, IMO.

While I have been pretty critical of the coaching staff, Blough has played decent for being thrown in without game experience, it takes a while for most, better hands by receivers and a little more effort by one or two offensive lineman and he would look even better, hopefully the team can play well and win a few more, and i will keep my critisim to myself, but I still wonder why the coaches play some players ahead of others.I think that is one of the reasons Purdue has lost so many. And if this was a one hit wonder today, I won't let up

How can a new coach make things worse? It absolutely cannot get worse.

A trainwreck would be getting blown out every week and our players getting arrested each weekend...see Hope's last couple of years.

So if we don't win another game this season but nobody gets arrested and we don't get blown out you'll happily call it a success?

I'm troubled by your binary perspective. Yes, you either win or lose games, but there are a lot of stops between "train-wreak" and success"". We all want the same thing. Don't doubt that in any way. We just might disagree on the path through the forest. That's all.

I am afraid Hope let the program down through weak recruiting. It is going to take time to build it up. We need to give Hazell more time to get to where we want him to be.
