Listening to a national radio broadcast here in Houston (Outkick the coverage?), I heard Bobby Petrino and Brohm tied for 2nd in the odds of becoming the next TN coach. 1st was Chip Kelly and that would seemingly be a more realistic choice given Petrino has a good situation going there and Brohm is still unproven in a Power 5. And although many here, including myself, believe he's the real deal, I just can't see him going to TN next year already 1) because he doesn't seem like the type that would bolt that quick 2) TN fans are going to be expecting a bigger name

I have not seen any actual numbers of what it would cost another school to hire Brohm next year. I am assuming between buyout of the old coach, a competitive salary for Brohm, and buying out his Purdue contract they are looking at $10M. What is his buyout if he leaves this year?
Second, doesn't Tenn have Butch Jones? Remember when people were pissed we didn't get him?

Petrino may be looking for a quick jump considering he doesn't have job security now with UofL firing their AD with the basketball scandal. I highly doubt Brohm heads to either of those jobs as I believe he likes the challenge of what is ahead of him at Purdue, enjoys the city (from what I have heard he loves what the area provides for his family), and money isn't the most important factor in what drives him to be a coach. I think he has shown his value to Purdue and Bobinski, Mitch, and the Board and will give him what he wants and needs to be successful.

I think the Tennessee job is likely to go to Chip Kelly as that seems to be a good fit for both parties....Brohm's makeup and build just doesn't seem to fit UT's environment.

2 things about money:
1) It's always about the money. So any coach, player, agent, etc who says 'It isn't about the money', is lying.
2) buy-out money for a big time program that consistently sells out a 100K stadium isn't going to be the main factor. They know the value of their brand and program to the school and ath dept. If they think the can get the right guy but he has a big buy out, they'll eat that for the right coach.

Would hate to lose Brohm after a year, but I completely understand if he would at least listen to a school like Tennessee or LSU. On a side note, UT's new chancellor is a former dean at Purdue.

UT is where coaching careers go to die. I hope Brohm would take a hard pass on that alone. Purdue isnt as high profile but you have a better chance of winning in the big ten west than sec east imo.

Ummm, it's not like we have a much better reputation. Who was the last coach who used Purdue as a step up to a higher level?

Right. We never hired anyone with a pedigree to be a top level head coach after Tiller. UTs last 3 coaches all had good fbs resumes coming in and eventually got run out of town.

OTOH who was 5 he last coach that had an established rep and left here with his career in a dumpster? That's what happens at UT. Think IU fans on steroids.
UT's biggest issue was firing Phil Fulmer....their program has gone the way of Nebraska and it is almost a scary parallel when you get in to it. A fan base who wasn't happy with 9-10 win seasons fired a successful coach after immense pressure to 'take the next step' thanks in large part to the more established programs in their conference (UT = LSU/Alabama)(Nebraska = UM and OSU).

Here are the odds according to CBS. Interesting to see PJ Fleck as one of the top candidates (though with much longer odds than Brohm). I think the people who set these odds may be a bit lazy and may rely on coaches whose names have been in the news quite a bit recently. I'm tempted to put $10 on Peyton Manning just for the potential payoff.

This is no different than Purdue fans who want to fire Painter with a bunch of 25 win seasons or Purdue fans who wanted Tiller gone with a bunch of bowl appearances. Fans that live in West Lafayette are not morally superior to fans who live in Knoxville or Lincoln. People are people wherever you go.

Purdue fans always play the morally superior card with fan bases of more successful programs because we are insecure about our lack of championships and overall competitiveness. Sorry but true.

Not true...I didn't see a petition circulating the entire fan base to fire a coach like it happened in UT or the absolute dumspter fire that has now occurred at Nebraska because a large majority of their fans wanted their coach gone. In Purdue's situation, it was a very vocal minority of dingbats.

Tennessee can bring in a big name coach. Neither of the three you mentioned will be their coach.

UT might go the NFL route with a coordinator. I have long thought Tee Martin would hold out for a return to his alma mater and now might be the time for UT to give him a shot. He is a young coach who has a proven offensive system and he can sell to QB recruits his coaching of Sam Darnold. He is also a known high level recruiter and him being a part of the program back when they were incredibly solid would make him a good fit...again though, some times these schools go with the flash in the pan hire rather than the one that fits what is needed. See Purdue and Bobinski hiring Brohm versus FAU hiring Lane Kiffin.

Interesting that you view Nebraska as a dumpster fire after they canned Pelini but don't view the Hope/Hazell era as a dumpster fire after we encouraged Joe to retire a little sooner than he probably would have liked. Mike Riley would coach circles around Hope and Hazell. Again, the moral superiority thing is based on insecurity and lame.

I'm not a fan of the Kelly boys. Ego's bigger than a tall building.. I wouldn't count out Mike Leach.

Chip Kelly is the biggest fish out there for colleges.

I have a hard time seeing Leach leaving Pullman. Dude is eccentric to say the least and knows it.

I strictly find UT's and Nebraska's situation very similar. Two traditional powers whose fan base became irate with what many programs would deem success and only succeeded in falling further and further behind as those other powers who were similar to them 15-20 years ago have either trended upward or remained where they were.

To be fair, before the few loud people started to shout for Painter and Tiller's firing, both had been there for near an entire decade. So even the fan with the most ridiculous expectations will still take a wait and see approach at Purdue when it comes to coaching. Nebraska and Tennessee? Not so much.

Say somebody offers Brohm $5mil a year. A. THATS A LOT for a coach without proven P5 success and B, we already pay the dude $3.3....we could easily match if we wanted. We don't have Tennessee money but we could afford an extra 1.7mil a year.

I'm not worried about it.

Sure Tennessee is a much higher profile job but the BIG West is a lot easier to win than the SEC East. AND add to the fact that's TENNESSEE has to play Alabama every year....it not THAT appealing of a job if you can get the same money with less expectations

Yep. Take us to a Rose Bowl and have ten years of sustained success and we'll name the field after you. Got to think that factors in.

Purdue fans are no more patient than Tennessee and Nebraska fans. The reason that Purdue fans were not calling for Painter and Tiller to be fired initially was because they were both having outstanding success - it had nothing to do with Purdue fans being more patient than other fans. The instant they both stopped having as much success, shouts for their firings began. Purdue fans are not morally superior to other fans when it comes to this issue. The notion that we are morally superior fans is a loser's mentality that is driven by insecurity about our overall athletic program competitiveness. It comes across kind of like the ugly girls trashing the pretty girls behind their backs.

Yawn. Brohm isn't going anywhere. He's going to be HC at Purdue for a LONG time!
