Tired of hearing how our receivers "don't have the speed"

Nebraska would convert a 3rd and 13 or get 9 yards when they needed 8 on a well executed route where a "meh" receiver (compared to many that we've seen come into Ross Add) that was anything but beating someone down the field just freaking executed.

Not only were #8 and Pearson-El not Braylon Edwards or Michael Jenkins ... they weren't even Selwyn Lymon at Notre Dame. I wasn't watching Dwayne Jarrett at USC or Ramance Taylor or whoever. I was just watching guys who were so so execute like they had the fear of god put into them about not executing. Because that's the elephant that no one wants to talk about.. someone went into that Nebraska locker room and made them afraid of real consequences if they lost.

Should it be that way? No. does the world work that way? Yes.

When you hear "#7 ran so much while the team was practicing last week that the coaches didn't feel that he had any legs left for this game. We were told he will return to standard practice after this Illinois game" you're going to see less drops.

Because excellence motivates leaders like Taylor Stubblefield and chris Daniels and fear motivates everyone.

Did Stubblefield run a 4.5? No. was he even seriously considered to have an NFL career? No.

But he executed. He caught the ball with his hands and wasn't trying to do this stupid BS where your jersey has seven on it, you're wide open for a bomb, you look back, and you try to catch it with your chest and hope your hands find your way to the ball after.

When you hear coach brohm ... instead of cop outs about not having James Jett (whose career was very pedestrian despite world class speed cause he couldn't run routes or catch), talking about "well you know if A receiver, any receiver, misses so many blocks and drops easy drag routes.. he might run all week instead of practicing and after individual film review he might be told that he has another week of running while the other guys actually practice what they came here to do" you'll stop
Seeing guys play wide open bombs like they are diving into a pool trying to catch throws from the balcony at a summer party.

There are high school coaches who would play a freshman and not let you see the field for a week or two after some of that stuff.

But it's ok coach brohm.. do or don't do whatever you want. But stop telling people that wide receiver execution has any thing to do with speed. Cause you aren't at the "we don't have speed" place yet. Taylor Stubblefield didn't have speed. But he could catch a ball that most high school varsity receivers would reel in. And that comes first.

Brohm is noticeably better than Hope and a universe from Hazell... and I'm happy with what I'm seeing vs. some of the scores I would have predicted in July. And Holt and our defense came to play.. just like worship and #1, just like blough yesterday (I said yesterday), and they deserve better than guys who can't keep their head down till the snap AT HOME and guys who can't catch passes in high school situations. Because that's not "beat a guy who you can't beat because he's Deion sanders and you're Taylor Stubblefield" ... that's fundamental. That's "reach up with your hands instead of hoping for the best with your chest."

And hopefully he addresses that for what it is instead of coming out with "well we just don't have speed"... as if speed would have made every receiver we had other than anthrop more open than they were on inexcusable drops.

The WRs aren't getting open. Is that speed? Is that route running? Is that the play not given enough time to develop? I am not sure, but the WRs are not getting separation and lack of speed is the easiest diagnosis. The WRs lack the size and athleticism to win jump balls. Good route running can cause separation without elite speed, but the WRs aren't running clean routes and using them to get open. When they do get open, they drop far too many passes that should be caught at this level. The DBs just don't respect the WRs and can cheat up/jump routes, which they are doing.

The offensive line is also causing their own set of issues. This isn't all on the WRs, but that is sure a good place to start looking. Next year will be better as more talent at WR and Oline come in. More speed and hopefully a better Oline allowing the plays to fully develop. It is clear that CJB doesn't have the talent to run the offense he wants. Adding in speed and being able to open up the middle with the threat of deep passing will help. Currently, Purdue can't do that and so teams cheat up and play man.

Zico and sparks weren't open? And that's not to pick on them... that's actually me saying they got the most separation I saw... no w all you gotta do is reel it in?

The frustration is not bashing so much as it is that this is the first time since 09 that the problem isn't so much that you look up like "yeah, we suck.." but more that they are so close And it's the basics.

I know this team will see better days.. just hoping yesterday was 4-4 and looking at a likely bowl

The rebuild is under way but it will take a couple years to get Brohm’s recruits onto the field, just being realistic. Got to build some depth at multiple positions, all the while gettin guys experience. Not gonna be easy, but a couple solid classes back to back will certainly keep this program trending upwards.
It’s gonna happen, just gotta stay on board!

Agree with much of your statement, however, you may want to reassess your thoughts on De'Mornay Pierson-El.

Some good points about Daniel's and Stubblefield not having speed. But both had sure hands which it seems only Anthrop has as of now. Anthrop is also similar to Stubblefield in that neither is fast but both are/were quick.

I don't think it's a problem to have individual receivers without much speed. It's the entire receiving core that doesn't have speed and that's a problem. And the guys we do have with speed are either injured or can't get on the field.

Exactly, often the speed receiver is running a route not to necessarily get open, but to help another receiver get open. The Saints do this with Ted Ginn.
