Is this supposed to be an insult on Painter? Is it supposed to be embarrassing that one of the greatest college coaches of all time beat Painter for a recruit?
That was the best shocked face I could fine. Izzo beat out Painter? Very surprising since the only highly talented recruit that Painter has won over Izzo in recent years was hand delivered to us. Yeah, and the kid might be having a kid or whatever... add it to the list of reasons why we don't land talent.
I took it more to be an indirect knock against some of the people who say "Painter can get 5* talent, have you forgotten last year??" and similar comments, hence his hand-delivered reference. In all honesty, those posts are kind of annoying. Is this supposed to be an insult on Painter? Guess I missed Tad Boyle surpassing him...not a huge surprise though, as most others have as well at this point. Is this supposed to be an insult on Painter? Is it supposed to be embarrassing that one of the greatest college coaches of all time beat Painter for a recruit?
There literally is no such thing as "Painter's recruit to lose", and if there were, it may even be a safe bet that he would lose him. He has never been in a position to know though.I took it more to be an indirect knock against some of the people who say "Painter can get 5* talent, have you forgotten last year??" and similar comments, hence his hand-delivered reference. To your question though, there really isn't anything to be embarrassed about. Nobody mocked Roger Federer for losing to Nadal in finals of the French every year. Nadal was just better. That's why I couldn't believe the crazy uproar here when Jackson picked MSU. Some people acted like it was Painter's recruit to lose and that it was all locked up. The reality was it was going to take a bit of an "upset" so to speak to win that one. I mean, a few guys on the team started following Jackson on Twitter, and half the board erroneously thought that meant a done deal to Purdue for some reason.
Biggie would disagree. And save the whole he was handed to us crap because it holds no water. There literally is no such thing as "Painter's recruit to lose", and if there were, it may even be a safe bet that he would lose him. He has never been in a position to know though.
Not true...in either case.Biggie would disagree. And save the whole he was handed to us crap because it holds no water.

Biggie is only at Purdue because we could offer him something MSU could not. He didn't have to play the 5. We had two seven footers on the roster. He wanted big minutes (which he got), but he wanted them at the 4. Purdue also develops big men really well. We were the smart option for Biggie. I think Biggie is finally buying into Purdue, but it's taken him longer than some of the other players. We were more of a means to an end, and that was to get to the NBA. With all of the profiles he did for his teammates and coaches, I think he is finally starting to view Purdue as a family. I think he will need to dominate if he wants to get drafted next year. If he does and gets drafted in the first round that helps Purdue big time in recruiting. If we get him for a third year, that would really benefit Prude since they currently don't have a player like him to replace him, but that would move Vince back to the four which seems better for him. Purdue will be fine even if they keep striking out on recruits this year, but they really need to lock in some top 2018 talent and pick up a transfer or two to fill the void of minutes that is inevitably coming. Two straight strong years in recruiting helped get them ranked. 2016 they got a potential game changer in Edwards, but they only got one player. A strike out in 2017 and 2018 will show a large decline in the program, which would likely lead to a Painter exit. I don't see that happeneing, but it could. Purdue still has some targets, so until the clock hits zero we got a chance. Got to keep working! A weak 2017 class could also lead to some early strong 2018 recruit signings. Not ready to jump off the cliff just yet, but it is hard to see everybody getting their targets while we still wait for a first signee.
Thank you for proving my point. If things were as detrimental as some would think, Biggie still wouldn't of come here but Painter had to convince him to regardless. Not only that, probably had to talk him a bit in to staying.
Well said. But just being the right fit and offering playing time isn't enough. We were clearly the best option and fit for Battey and would be for Tillman as well. Yet we missed on Battey and will likely miss on Tillman. Painter just misses that special something. It's mind biggeling to me, because even though he lost Big Steve as a recruit, he still went to his funeral. He also showed some love to Spidel going through his injuries. Painter has all the potential in the world to be that guy like Izzo. I will say that it is harder to recruit four year guys when they won't get to play big minutes right away. Painter struggled getting top recruits when the baby boilers where in their prime and it took a few years to recover. Purdue has a ton of talent currently and a log jam at several positions. Even though they have big minutes that will soon be available at the 4-5, I am not sure everybody is sold Biggie will indeed be gone. 2018 some players graduate and time will open up for sure. 2018 is set up to be in a better position to recruit. However, Purdue aimed high and went all in for the 2017 class and is an batting .000 so far.
What do you guys think about the bolded part? Is it possible that recruits don't think Caleb, Vince or Haas will leave and are not willing to wait for playing time? I hadn't really thought that but curious what others think about that possibility. But just being the right fit and offering playing time isn't enough. And that is exactly what many of the so-called experts cried for Painter to do in previous seasons. People can't have it both ways as by the end of the recruiting season when you've put all your time in to high-ranked recruits, the others have already been long courted and have picked schools or Purdue is simply too late. However, Purdue aimed high and went all in for the 2017 class
I think Biggie is gone barring a terrible year for him, but Haas and VE you would think are 4 year type guys which if so, makes the recruiting that much more difficult I would imagine. What do you guys think about the bolded part? so you did disagree with our staff's approach for 2017 recruiting? And that is exactly what many of the so-called experts cried for Painter to do in previous seasons. It's a double-edged sword, because now we are seeing the results and yet people are complaining for getting exactly what they asked for. That is what gets me the most because many others predicted this would happen and those that did, were correct.

2018 that all changes however I would hope since playing time would be quite available.

and if so, how would your staff have approached it differently?

Cline and Carsen are going to need tommy John surgery after hoisting up 30 shots a game each that season.Ya think? As things stand now our starting 5 in 2018 will be Cline, Carsen, Taylor, you and me.
Purdue is not the same as NC or KY or Kansas where players are willing to come in behind other players. We can get there, but we aren't there yet. And yes, most players will see that Vince and Haas aren't going next year. What do you guys think about the bolded part? It's embarassing when it happens over and over and over, including on guys from the state of Indiana.
Every other team in the country has depth on their current roster that recruits have to worry bout playing behind. Vince & Haas will be seniors anyways while these kids are freshman, unles they think they need to be starting right away...which won't happen at MSU either I don't see it being a big factor. What do you guys think about the bolded part? I agree. There are enough good players to go around, as is shown every year in the dance. It seems like they are everywhere in March.Purdue will never be a UNC, UK or Kansas, and that is perfectly okay.
I firmly believe (although it's starting to waiver with Painter in charge) that they can become every bit as good as Wisconsin.
