The read option.....

I hate this play. When you take a QB who isn't use to running the ball or making those kinds of decisions, bad things happen more often than good.

Granted, maybe it's a play to make up for a poor OL (which I think is the case...our OL isn't very good), but there are a lot of other options to make up for a lack of a solid OL. Misdirection, screens, dump offs, quick hitters, roll outs, boot legs, etc.

Personally, I would screen teams to death. I run 10-15 per game. It's a high % pass, gets the ball to guys in space, slows down the rush, can make up for a lack of OL push, and makes LBs and DL have to play more reads as opposed to just keying in on something.

Seems like with our read option, Appleby holds the ball and then follows directly behind (or next to) the running back. I thought the QB reads the Defensive End and goes wide with the ball, or hands it off for the inside run. When we run it both the running back AND the QB go inside. Is this the design?

Maybe Shoop wasn't paying attention when he learned it and he's teaching it wrong?
