I think Barry Odom at least has a floor of Danny Hope, which is miles ahead of Walters/Hazel. He might not be a great fit/coach but he's competent and can succeed with P2 resources to at least a limited extent.

Now that's not a ringing endorsement, but I will (and I think many others here will as well) take that in a heartbeat over the 2024 season.

Meh. I think he’s a good coach and knows how to win. He showed that at UNLV fairly obviously. Now the caveat there is that he won at a resource rich place relative to their conference competition.

Obviously he will never have that here.

That said, a guy who can recruit good players, puts a disciplined team on the field, scheme some advantages and win 5-8 games here should be fairly well lauded by the fans.

Until we invest big donor money (which is wildly unlikely since we don’t have it) this is who we are as a program. That said, I don’t think anybody here would complain after the Hazell and Walters regimes.

That's why I look more at what he did at Missouri as a young coach just starting out. He made some mistakes and learned from them but was fairly successful at the same time. Only reason he was let go at the time was because he didn't get along with the AD.

But he showed even then, he knows what he's doing and can identify the coaching talent needed as he went through a few OCs that moved up under him.

Purdue is not going to spend. A lot of money on a big name coach. Guys like Odom and Brohm were close to being the best coach Purdue could afford to hire. When Purdue hired Walters, who else were they rumored to to hire? Did that coach sign for less than Walters?

I’m impressed more by Odom’s success at Missouri than his success at UNLV. It’s rather easy to win 8-9 games at UNLV. Having a .500 record at Missouri was a lot harder.

Expectations? With the new additions to the BIG10, will Purdue ever have another winning season or be in a position to win a championship? a winning season, maybe.

A tougher question. As fans should we just accept the reality of mediocrity? Our spending and donors are nowhere close to what usc and OSU have. How can we hope or expect to compete? I have to ask, how are the other schools doing it? Where are teams like Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, msu, IU and other teams getting the money to compete?

Lot of highly mischaracterized statements here. Walters was a bad hire. Purdue made a mistake. Nothing to do with money. You asked the question and I will answer, the other finalist is making about $1m as head coach of WKU. It wasn’t that we didn’t want to pay for him but we made a bad decision (and to be clear our AD preferred the candidate we did not hire). We had other candidates that were excellent. In fact the guy we wanted not only said no but then said no to stupid money thrown at them from MSU (Chris Klieman). But let’s not let facts get in the way.

This isn’t all about money. Sure it’s a factor. But Purdue has pledged to match 100% of maximum dollars allowed under revenue sharing. Sure our donors can step up but don’t hold that against our program. We had 5-7 win talent last year, just made a bad decision on a coach.

Brohm was a good hire. Not sure what you are getting there as the best we can do like we are extremely handicapped? I bet the vast majority of the big ten teams would take him. He took us to the freakin conference championship game and contrary to what you want to believe we were competitive for much of it.

Also it is NOT easy to win 8-9 at UNLV and be a top 25 team. That is such a stupid comment. And he won 11!!! This year. Since 1984, UNLV has won 8+ games ONE time until odom.

I’m encouraged. We don’t accept mediocrity. Running tiller into retirement and also moving on from hope is proof. When we did get good coaches we have NEVER let them leave except the inevitably unavoidable situation with brohm to Louisville even after we remarkable kept him hear the first time.
