The Hard Hedge

Haha you’re right. I was just so defeated watching that first half. We looked like IU…no sense of urgency, going through the motions, didn’t seem like we cared and acted like we were entitled to win that game just cuz we had been dominating the B1G for the last 3 years.

I really hadn’t seen a performance from a painter team in quite some time. The refs changing it up from when it was 6-1 fouls in favor of Purdue had something to it, but we need to be able to adjust to that / the players should be used to that by now.

I really hope Braden and fletch are able to figure out how to start attacking these guard that are up in them 247. Need others to back door/back cut, set back screens and move the ball quick. I’m sure they’ll adjust, but man it was a rough watch.

I even sat through the entire IU beating. I'll be interested in tomorrows game and if Matt changes the lineup any?

I mean he has to right? We are insanely slow and tkr doesn’t shoot 3s, so we aren’t going to outrun big centers or run a five out. Im starting to wonder what advantage we actually gain from going small. It only works if heide is a stud. But he is wildly inconsistent, so that doesn’t seem like a good plan.

Long before this year I have always preferred 2 big 4s and 3 perimeter players. Not sure if Cam is 6’8” or 6’7”. If 6’8” he is athletic enough to defend someone a couple of inches taller , but he seems to disappear as far as looking to score too often.

Berg is interesting. He quickly picks up fouls and generally struggles. Yet Matt has seen enough to start the season with him. Does Berg struggle going from practice to game? Matt didn’t slowly phase him out, but pretty much nailed him to the bench for a couple of games . Was it a stimulus to attempt the response Matt wants?

The smaller lineup needs the Mason Gillis toughness. I’m curious if Berg or Burgess get minutes earlier as well as Cox tomorrow.

It sounds like you've never coached but I'm telling you that a team can't stand around against a press. There can be no strolling on offense. It requires an attack mode with short quick passes and players going full speed. It will also be determined by whether the opponent is playing a man to man press or a zone press.
This is is the patently false claim to which I responded:

Coach has had years to make adjustments to a pressure defense but has never done so.

More than anything I am excited for Maryland to see how the team adjusts. Unlike some I watched the entire penn st game as I was fasinated to see how the team would react to being down. Because we got to the title game last season, I am much more chill and analytical on how I watch games this year so the schematic part of the game is much more entertaining than wins and losses. Of course I want to win every game but the drama of seeing a team grow or not grow is more interesting this year.
it almost always is if you love the game.

I suspect you're right. Small ball only makes sense if those guys are an offensive dynamo to offset other weakness. Other than the 1st game of it, that's not happening so much.
