The Captain should have waited a year

Mr Oarsman and smooth-talker, PJ Fleck, should have waited a year instead of settling for exile in Minnesota. He overplayed his hand last year when there were very few openings. Now this year it looks like Florida, UCLA, Tennessee, A&M, Nebraska, Oregon State, Arkansas, and Arizona State and others could all have head coaching vacancies.

WMU is 6-5 this year. They lost their star QB and receiver. I think Fleck would have risked more money by staying.

it's a tough decision when is the right time to move on. if fleck were to finish 6-6 this year, how many of those teams mentioned would be calling him? then again, after bringing all of his best recruits and players with him to Minn, look at how he has been able to turn that program around! What was Minn's record last year and they fired their coach so they could bring in Fleck to take them to that next level? that story sounds oh so familiar.

Reports are all over the morning news in Houston that A&M’s Sumlin is toast, won or lose, after their game against LSU...

I am a Sumlin fan but I think we have a better one!

He’d be a nice addition to our former HCs on the staff tho! I’m sure at least 1 job will come open. Why not sign him up and slot him in later?

Minnesota
2016: 9-4
2017: 5-6, facing Wisconsin for bowl eligibility

Purdue
2016: 3-9
2017: 5-6, facing Indiana for bowl eligibility

What is even more astonishing is the 2018 recruiting classes. This is where Fleck was supposed to have a huge advantage over Brohm. Both are mostly filled with 23 commits and are separated by an eyelash.

it's interesting that Fleck turned down the Purdue job for Minnesota. I found it stupid minn fired its coach . Was he fired because of that recruit getting into trouble at the frat's house on a visit?

I often thought Breese made tiller look good and covered up a lot of Tiller's deficiencies, much like Rogers and Favre in Green Bay. it would appear the same thing was true for Fleck last year and that Northern Ill coach several years ago. His QB made the coach look good.

Brohm was essentially still playing catch-up with the 2018 class as he hasn't even been on the job for a full year yet and I think you are seeing his ability to recruit with the 2019 class getting a great head start with Karlaftis and potentially Kiser being a heavy lean to Purdue as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Kiser ends up committing after his season ends on Friday (all speculation and no inside info here).

I don't buy the Brees making Tiller look good considering Tiller's best team was led by Orton in 2004 and not for the play that shall not be spoken of would have led to a potential championship and a spot in the NC game. Also the Dicken led first team won 9 games as well.

MBob is on record saying he never even spoke with Fleck.

I don't really believe that. AD's often lie . What I believe is after approaching Fleck's agent, and Fleck said no, MBob didn't pursue him or talk about contract terms to him further. At one point in time last year, Fleck said he wasn't talking to anybody, although his agent obviously was.

You can believe whatever you want, just calling out speculation before it spreads as fact.

Crazy that winning records are no longer successful in A&M’s book.

Careful what they wish for.
I am a firm believer, and one day I might have data to support it, that most programs are better off sticking with a coach who is proven able to consistently win 7-10 games, hoping one day with continuity and a few breaks he might break through to elite status, than you are rolling the dice and starting over. But fans of A&M, Tennessee, Notre Dame don't want to see themselves as second tier, even though that's what they have been for the past 2 decades or more.

One could argue the same for the 2003 team.

Yours is speculation as well! Just because somebody denies something doesn't mean it didn't happen. There are a lot of denials made in divorce courts and a lot of lies and denials told by athletes, coaches and politicians! You're speculating MBob told the truth! I read media reports that said otherwise! By saying I'm speculating, you're calling seveveral reporters liars! I'm speculating they told the truth! Neither one of us has proof ! So we're both speculating! We just have differing viewpoints and whom we choose to believe! Much like do you believe Moore who denies everything or his accusers! There are people who believe Moore simply because he denies it! We both know What MBob said. You choose to believe him and I don't !

The same was true for Purdue. In Morgan's introduction of Hazell, Morgan said the move was made to elevate our program not to start a rebuild! Was Morgan lying, or did he truly believe Hazell was going to take Hope's team and make it better immediately? Purdue would have been better off keeping Hope one more year!

Why stop there? We would have been better off giving Tiller a few more years and supporting his program financially.

Fleck just signed an extension till 2023.

Ok I also hated the idea of hiring Hope a year early! And making him an assistant! My thought was if we were bad, I didn't want to promote hope to be a head coach! And we ended being bad that year and also stuck with Hope! My post on that is in the archives somewhere!

I guess it pays to get your name in the news as possibly be interested in another job! His agent floats his name as being available! The school gets nervous and gives him an extension and Fleck can say he never talked to anybody and deny everything! And you wonder why I don't believe him! Fleck was probably using Purdue to get an extension from western mich, but then a better offer came along!

Purdue never offered him the job!!!

I never said they did! Read my words! I said MBob and Fleck were lying if they said they never talked to each other! Or Fleck can say he never talked, but his agent did! If you hire somebody to represent you, he's acting in your behalf

I agree!!! Iowa Fans were never the same after Frye went to Ann Arbor and beat MU at their place....Iowa was our door mat for years prior to CHF. If schools had not been so successful at using Fryes age against him in recruiting....he would have been at IOWA longer.
Ferentz is the poster child of your argument!!!

I truly believe hope would have had 10 more wins over hazell and would have had different recruits.

So if we're speculating that Brohm could leave PU, why can't Fleck leave Minny? Just saying.
