The Boiler Guards...

On paper, this team has just about everything. Can they get a Monte Morris or a Kris Dunn to transfer and walk-on immediately? Then they'll have everything a team needs, on paper, haha.

Painter said that PJ and Hill were really close in terms of who might be earning more playing time. That either means PJ improved a lot over the summer or if PJ didn't improve quite a bit, that Hill isn't quite as good as we all hope he will be.

I'm still a big believer that if PJ or Hill aren't offensive threats or outside shooting threats, then this Purdue team would be better giving Mathias/Cline/Stephens those minutes at the guard spot to make teams pay more if they zone or double team. We need to keep teams as honest as possible and having a guard out there who isn't a 3 point threat when teams zone us going to be a liability.

This team will only go so far in the tournament as our guards take us.

I am hoping that PJ improved a lot. If not, I agree with @since1980 that it would make sense to see another good shooter out there to spread the floor. It's been said that Matthias and Cline are pretty good ball handlers. That said, defense is king at Purdue and if they can't defend the other side well, Painter won't run with it.

I think the answer is PJ improved and Hill is still somewhat of an unknown. There's been info that says Hill is still working on reducing turnovers, but he can defend and go in and dunk like Octeus. PJ is very quick, getting to be a better defender, doesn't turn it over, TBD on his 3-point shooting. Painter has said it will go to the exhibition game and scrimmage to see how they do in action.

I just don't want it to be 4-on-5 on the floor when Purdue's on offense. That won't work against the really good teams. They need 5 players on the floor that can all either score in the paint or make shots out to mid-range (preferably long range as well) consistently. CMP can talk about the program's "play hard" motto and "defense first" attitude but if they can't make jumpers or score in general regularly, it won't matter when it comes time to play top competition in the postseason.

I like that group too Gip, especially in light of several opinions on here that with our motion offense we don't need a true PG. But I think instead of Haas I would rather have Edwards in there with Hammons. Btfu!

I think an occasional Stephens, Cline and Mathias paired with AJH and IH would be interesting and potentially explosive offensively

It would be fun offensively, but a train wreck on the defensive side. Who does IH guard? Who puts any pressure on the opposing teams PG? Our best chance for success will be to shuts down teams for 5-7 minutes like we did at times last season while also having some pretty decent offensive firepower on the other end as well.
