The Big 18

Do I have a motion for 20?
Does it get to 20 and then have two Big divisions with home and home games once again inside each division with a couple or so crossovers and then division champs play each other with a bit more rest to prepare for the tourney?

The issue with going to twenty teams is a strategic one. Sure they could add Cal and Stanford. But it may be more lucrative to steal away a team such as FSU, Miami, Clemson or North Carolina! People keep claiming that schools have contracts with their conferences and can’t be bought out! There is not a contract written today that cannot be bought out if the university wants to do so.

Hoops travel issues can be mitigated by playing the longest-distance games during the holidays when classes are out - and in the case of vball, swimming, etc, just not playing some teams at all except maybe during a tournament.

This would be a good time to dump the tedious BTN hoops tournament and just finish the season with games against nearby rivals so teams would be fresher for March madness.

Not that any of these ideas will be considered since the networks are in charge of it all.
There's a long line of teams that would like that trip during break. No way to get them all in.

I could see a west and east champion playing for the conference championship.....$$$ then the b10 tourney$$$$.

I could see the big 10 expanding to 24 teams just as easily as 20 teams. Academic credibility or geography are no longer factors for inclusion. It’s all about market share, name recognition and money! I can foresee both the sec and big 10 stealing teams away from the acc next as universities look at the cost of doing business verses the potential revenue. Revenue has now become the #1 factor.

What I fear is that those west coast schools will try to inject their backwards politics into the greater B10 community. I think it would be funny if they are not able to come to the Midwest and play because of their state government regulations.

Rutgers, for example, could take a west coast trip in late Dec. and play 2 or 3 road games. Likewise for MD, PSU, and others.

USC, for example, could take an east coast trip in early Jan and play 2-3 road games.

Home & away series between West and East coast teams would have to be outlawed.

Games in non-rev sports between West and East would have to be restricted or banished.

Had to be partially for scheduling purposes. Still think it's going to be tough in that regard for bball and volleyball
That is the extreme downside to this. The small budget sports now have huge increases in expenses. Surely the schedules will be set like the Pac-12 used to do it themselves, so that may help. Road trips to Oregon AND Washington. UCLA and USC.

Acc is next. There's no way around it. Divide them up between big 10 and sec. Leftovers end up in b12 and some in the cold. Aac gets a boost like the mountain west maybe.

They'll get it figured out.
