The Big 18

I think it would be funny if the ACC does break up with Brohm there now.

I would like to add Miami and Clemson to the BT from that conference.
Jeff gets paid whatever happens.

Clemson has always seemed like a high-brow Nebraska to me. SEC is more their style.

Do I have a motion for 20?
It's really sad to watch this. People are saying the death blow was today but as soon as the big ten took usc and ucla this was almost inevitable. I honestly hope the acc can hang on. Oregon state and wash state fans and alums have to be in complete shock. There's a few universities in the acc that will be in the same spot if it goes away.

Dont care. These are bad fan bases. All of them. UCLA and USC included. They only get eyes because of the LA market.

Wash St and Oregon St. only get alumni attention. They aren’t worth the acquisition. I don’t feel bad for them…they aren’t worthy of the new breed of Power conference football and will soon be forgotten.

Add Cal and Oregon. Split the conference into two divisions. Call one the Pac 10 and the other the Big 10. Then you can call the conference championship the Rose Bowl. Seems simple to me.

When you say that, Purdue would probably be considered in that group aside from Basketball.

Jeebus some of you need to get out of the Midwest for a minute.

Oregon and Washington have a bad fan bases?!? They put ours to shame. Autzen Stadium is practically impossible to win at and Husky Stadium is over 70k.

Oh yeah. UofO brings alum and booster Phil Knight and UW brings alum and boosterJeff Bezos and their billions with them. You thought we were at a disadvantage in boosters before? You ain't seen nothing yet.

And UCLA is only for the LA market? UCLA is one of the worlds best and most recognizable universities. They also happen to be basketball royalty.

I swear the jealousy and napoleon complex of Purdue fans is sad.

Our lack of recognition isn't because there is some conspiracy against the Midwest or Purdue, or because there are bigger markets. ND has their own network (NBC).

Purdue's academics are viewed as on par with anyone. Literally anyone.

Our sports? Not so much. Purdue has done nothing to earn a national sports .following. Ever. And most likely will never.

And while I do well, and owe my success to Purdue, I only donate to research. That is what most of our alum and I who spend our money feel it is best utilized. Not on a game.

You want better sports facilities, high end coaches and portal transfers? Pony up. I'd rather keep putting our kids in space.

I gladly take my university being recognized as leading in tech and space than being known as a football school.

Interesting post, but don't follow this particular paragraph or some of the others. How does stadium size equate to putting our fan base to shame? UW is the only major fb program in a large state (geographically) and in a major metro area.

And Mackey is practically impossible for visitors to win at.

Bezos doesn't seem like a sports guy and is not a UW alum.

"Royalty" is really overstating it - and football is driving all the change, not hoops.

More exaggeration.

Our lack of recognition isn't because there is some conspiracy against the Midwest or Purdue, or because there are bigger markets. ND has their own network (NBC).
ND has a natural constituency from about 25% of the US population, so not a reasonable comparison with Purdue or any other teams - not even "royalty."

Depends who is doing the viewing, but what does that have to do with football?

Our sports? Not so much. Purdue has done nothing to earn a national sports .following. Ever. And most likely will never.
As you say below, it is just games, so what does it matter?

How is donating to research related to putting kids in space?

I gladly take my university being recognized as leading in tech and space than being known as a football school.
Leading in engineering and science is what you mean, right?

When you have to a leave a conference because you can’t get a good TV deal, the conference as a whole is crap. Nobody cares about college sports out there.

That’s the simple truth.

We (the conference) don’t need them IMO. The SEC is football revenue driven but the BIg Ten is the best of BBall and Football fans and viewership. USC brings FB, UCLA bring BBall but why add 2 schools for what one would bring?

Is the LA market really THAT important?

Yes! Regardless of whether the channels that the games are on are being watched, the subscribers are paying for it.

It's all about the packaging and monthly TV payments.
Yeah, seems hollow to me. Paying 4 teams for the eyes they dont bring in!

Autzen Stadium only seats 54,000 and UCLA averaged only 41000 plus fans in the stands .Thats pathetic. The Bruins fan base is down there with IU in football.

I don’t know about USC and UCLA but we just got Oregon and Washington for pac 12 clearance prices.

I still don’t like that we threw a life preserver to those arrogant SOBs though. I was reading hardcore husky and they are posting tweets about how Purdue should be kicked out. West coast arrogance is unbearable

Easy wins.. they are going to struggle in this conference.
It’s going to be tough on all to travel coast to coast and play your A game along with the time changes. The good on paper may turn out to be not so much a lot of times.

It’s not just that … I think big ten teams are infinitely tougher to beat in November than they are in the pre or post season.

It’s tough to go to Minnesota in the cold rain and think you’re gonna air it out the next week in happy valley.

Remember the 29 point win over Ohio state in 2018? We followed it up by getting absolutely punched in the mouth at Michigan state and Minnesota the following two weeks..

Had to be partially for scheduling purposes. Still think it's going to be tough in that regard for bball and volleyball
Yeah, I've taught athletes at several D1 universities. Long-distance travel seemed to affect sports other than football (volleyball, basketball, swimming, etc.) the most, especially f they had a mid-week competition.

Still, multiple trips out west during the season will be rough on players (especially east coast teams like Rutgers and UMD).

Just Purdue or several others also that are not up to their lofty standards?

Hoops travel issues can be mitigated by playing the longest-distance games during the holidays when classes are out - and in the case of vball, swimming, etc, just not playing some teams at all except maybe during a tournament.

This would be a good time to dump the tedious BTN hoops tournament and just finish the season with games against nearby rivals so teams would be fresher for March madness.

Not that any of these ideas will be considered since the networks are in charge of it all.
