Not being a homer here, but targeting was my first thought.
The officials have been so d@mn inconsistent with that call, but based on what's been called in the past, definitely could have been called.
Here is the rule:
No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-4-I-VI)
Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:
Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area
A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground
Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area
Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet.
I'll have to watch it again, but certainly could have been called. From my memory, defensive contact was slightly below the face mask, but definitely one they should have reviewed.
He led with his helmet. The crown of his helmet hit Hopkins in the face mask. The official rule of targeting is leading with the helmet to the head/neck area. If that's not targeting, I'm not sure what is. It should have at least been reviewed based on what we've seen in other games.
Thieneman got tossed from the Michigan game last year for less.
He hit him in the upper chest, that was close. They would ave probably reviewed it.
He was a defenseless player getting hit by someone clearly and intentionally leading with his helmet.

Went back and watched in slow motion frame by frame. His shoulder pad hit him as the big hit at his upper chest. Sorry, I have to disagree. Appeared to be a good hit.
Any time you launch yourself, with the crown of the helmet, toward a defenseless player...it is targeting.

I thought it was a good hit. Of course, I think targeting is ridiculous - it's kind of like pass interference in its arbitrariness.
The ref said it was an INT with a personal foul after the interception. Replay clearly showed same player making head to head hit and then picking ball up off of receivers legs. Should have been our ball with yards marched off against MSU.
Couldn’t agree more. I can’t wait till a few years from now when Brohm laughs in their face and ESPN announcers are talking about how they held us in 2018 and this time it’s just too obvious
I asked this in the other thread...the decision to review for targeting is made upstairs, right? With the change of possession, he had all sorts of time to review the play. He must have not seen him lead with the head or hit the head. Regardless, it was very close. If it had been called against one of our defensive players, I'm sure we would be arguing the opposite.

The reality is, we need some type of rule to protect players who are exposed. That's what 'targeting' was supposed to do.
Unfortunately, it's been a debacle. Clean hits called targeting. Targeting hits not called.
The MSU player made a play with highly questionable contact. Could've (should've?) been called targeting. It's up for debate. Bottom line: switch who has the ball, and that call goes against a visiting team.
