Sweet Sixteen bound! Any recommendations on what to do in KC?

Does anyone know of any friendly Purdue bars?

KC has a nice downtown area, although not packed with sightseeing. The Power and Light District is where the arena is and there's some good bars/restaurants. KC has a very good art museum by the plaza (see below), as well as Boulevard Brewing has tours.

Also, a little outside of downtown is Country Club Plaza, which is a few blocks worth of pretty high end shopping stuff/restaurants. It's the ritzy area of KC and has a nice river walk, etc.

Obviously eating is a good thing in KC - a couple places to consider are Q39, Jack Stack, Joe's and BB's ( best ribs).

As for a Purdue bar, the Purdue Alumni Association will partner with a bar near the Sprint Center.

If you like baseball, I hear the Negro League Museum there is amazing.

When I was on the Purdue Crops judging team (yes, we got all the ladies) we competed for a national title in Kansas City at the KCBOT. Our awards ceremony was at a restaurant called Shorthorn or something like that. Best stake I've ever had. Unfortunately, after eating I was too full to collect all the panties thrown my way for being a member of the Purdue Crops Judging Team. (Yes, I'm a farm boy.)

Samsonite! I was way off!

Avoid the river casino's, if possible. I hope your trip is a success. I won't be going as all my tourney trips have ended in losses. Can't jinx them. Hope you are a lucky charm...

Have a BLT and Cheese fries at The Peanut.....cold beers too.

Best BLT's ever......

KU fan here (was actually in west Lafayette about 3 years ago, had a good time). Stick to these and you'll have a good time. I generally recommend getting out of downtown to actually see some of the city.

BBQ: Joe's (in a gas station, one of Bourdain's top 12 places to eat before you die, get the ribs or the z-man); Jack Stack (more upscale); Arthur Bryant's (in the ghetto, but worth it); Char bar (food isn't as good, but really cool patio with bocce and such)

Drinking: Boulevard brewery (go day drink in the beer hall or take the tour); Power & Light (only during the bball games, not a great place otherwise); Westport (lots of options, Kelley's, Westport Ale House, Harry's); Crossroads (up down arcade bar, toms town distillery, green lady lounge for music)

Other food: as mentioned the Peanut (wings and blt); Farmhouse (rustic farm to table); gram & dun (upscale hipster); anton's (steakhouse); Boulevard Tavern (new American); beer kitchen (brunch); port Fonda (hipster Mexican); Lulus (Thai)

Activities: Nelson Atkins art museum; country club plaza for shopping; World War I memorial; uhhh just go drink somewhere

You went to KC and got a BLT? Come on! haha

Lots of good places to eat in KC, only so many meals in a day.

Of course had the BBQ and other tourist stuff......

I travel for my work covering North America with travel to Italy, Germany and Asia.

Hands down the BLT at "The Peanut" is the best I have ever had.

So quit being a small minded fool and let me give the recommendation.

It's worth it.......and the cheese fries and cold beer....make sure to go the original one downtown.

Kansas fan here. First off, I'm really looking forward to the matchup. Two very different styles going head to head--should be exciting.

davs50321 listed a lot of great places. I'd throw in Harry's Country Club in the River Market area. It's close to the Sprint Center and a short, free trolley ride away. Great patio, wild beer selection, fantastic music and ambiance. Also, when you're plowed at 3am and need grub, stop by Town Topic. It's a tiny hole in the wall diner near the arena and has great greasy burgers and is open 24 hours. Have a 'Truck Stop'. Deeeelicious way to spend 4,000 calories.

Westport is a really fantastic area with lots of excellent KC originals like McCoy's, Harry's Bar and Tables, Port Fonda, and the strangely iconic Kelly's. Because of this, I'd recommend spending time there as opposed to the Plaza or P&L. Power & Light is rather corporate, but they absolutely know how to host a basketball tournament. Also, there are quite a few bars within a couple of blocks of P&L that are local and have a lot more flavor. Extra Virgin (owned by a James Beard award winner), Record Bar, and the Cashew to name a few.

KU fans are typically pretty friendly people, so you should't get much grief wearing your Purdue gear around town or at the game. You'll probably get a few 'good luck's' from Missouri and K-State fans. Have fun in KC, enjoy the game, and let's all hope we're treated to a historic match.

Purdue grad living in kc. Almost all the barbeque in kc is very good buy Joes is consistently the best but you will likely need to wait in line. Gates and Bryant's are iconic but the quality isnt what it once was 25 years ago. Smoking Guns and Slaps are under the radar but awesome. Ribs are good (not as good as memphis) but the specific cut which kc does better than anyplace else in the country are the burnt ends.

Negro league baseball museum is fantastic.

The Rieger Hotel, Affaire, and La Bodega are nice restaurants in an are known as the crossroards which is close to downtown/sprint center. if uou like Pizza, check out Grinders, which is also in the Crossroads.
