Swanigan waiting for Cal scholarship to open up

reason for the delay...

The crazy recruiting saga of Caleb Swanigan has taken another strange twist - word out of Berkley is that he is waiting for Cal scholie. Wow

— Jeff Washburn (@JeffWashburnJC) May 12, 2015
I F'ing love it... this place is a trainwreck now. And Washburn still uses his JC twitter handle... haha.

So now you are posting something as fact, that is based off a tweet from a reporter on a Cal site that is getting her info from an unnammed source that is close to Barnes who is the legal guardian of Swanigan. The one real person that knows....

And people are eating it up. People reading it on this board would literally be getting what like 4th or 5th hand knowledge here... Anyone every play telephone when they were young... no imagine that original phone receiver was just dangling from the cord with no one on the end. Can we please just stop posting new threads at least and have one mega thread? Literally nothing has changed since last week and we continue to get new threads each day saying nothing new.

. . . . that Barnes and Swanigan have zero need for money should tell you that this notion makes no sense at all. Why would Barnes put his business at risk for a pittance that he'd get from this? Think with your heads, people.

Amen to this. I have not heard anyone talk about handlers until today. For all I know, it is just Caleb and Barnes that are dealing with this situation. Let's stop all the raw speculation created by quoting other idiots that know nothing, but are speculating about some shadowy "handlers". No such beasts exist as far I can tell.

...and no, even if Cal gets him, I don't think this was a "dirty" recruiting effort.

JJ type athleticism. Slightly bigger (wider) frame. Already a plus rebounder. Will develop his shot blocking and shot making. Likely will be a 4 year contributor from here on out. Has incredible versatility with size and athleticism....just needs to develop the shooting skill.
Exactly this plus he loves being a Boilermaker......

I have passion for Purdue (ala my truck etc) but J. Taylor last year was an extra cheerleader he was always so excited.

His tweets are him chomping at the bit to get on the floor.

Take the passion, the skills and the chance...he is going to be awesome!

I can't wait!

Boiler Up!

Fyi peegs and rabjohns have been saying this is the dirtiest recruitment they've ever been involved in. That has to mean something , I can at least respect Mike he is s straight shooter who uses no bias

I just went through every Peegs post since the decommit (the new boards make this extremely easy given that he doesn't post much) and did not see him say anything even remotely like this.

The closest I could find was this: "...and a crazy recruiting saga that maybe was best to avoid."

I'll get that tomorrow, my brother has it saved on his phone.

TD, I said in a post a few days ago that I was a little nervous about this because it just doesn't smell right. While I want CS to come to Purdue, wherever he goes can probably expect an investigation.

Please explain. What is there to investigate? You keep referring to "handlers". Who are they?

With that said my brother is a HUGE Iu fan, and could have jealously photoshopped it to his phone to annoy me. I will find out, wouldn't shock me from him either.

As others said Rosie is very smart. There may be influences going on but he is a business man and said this is a business decision as well. If he really was worried about money it's going to be revolved around keeping this clean and Caleb clean. This isn't some guy who just showed up when Caleb hit the top ten lists. He's family now and knows the business and as such you have to imagine will be his agent when/if he goes pro. There will be so much money for him at that time it's not worth endangering any of that now for a smaller quick payday.

Living with Barnes, who is affiliated with Parkers agency and then decommitting from MSU has to raise some eyebrows. I think anytime a kid like this is getting influenced from outside his family, just sort of raises a red flag, especially when it becomes the circus this has. Maybe everything is on the up and up, I don't know. But I do know there are going to be some hard feelings when this ends, probably by Izzo and also by whoever loses a scholly at Cal.

@lindzcatharine
Source close to Swanigan just now: As of today, Cal coaches putting "full court press" on Swanigan.

This Cal rivals reporter is kind of contradicting herself. Why would Cal be pushing for Swanigan if they don't have a spot available right now? If Caleb is "waiting for them", what does Cal pushing Swanigan do?

Hah and a Purdue fan called her on it. She's just fishing for follows because now she tweeted something about him being ok waiting it out. I love that Nathan Baird and Brantley follow her. Mission accomplished.

I mean, his family IS Barnes. CS considers him his adopted father. As far as I hear, there is no biological father even in the picture.

Again, nobody can answer the question on why Swanigan or Barnes would do this for money....one has enough and one is soon to have a lot! Both legitimately! The only people saying that this is dirty are teams who were never involved, teams that have been spurned or people who have no clue in general.

FWIW... I'd echo what Sucram and a couple others have stated. I've not seen that kind of statement from Peegs or Rabjohns about Swanigan or Barnes. I'm a regular reader on the premie board and join the weekly chats about half the time. Peegs has posted about this recruitment multiple times in response to people asking what IU's status is and/or whether we're recruiting him, etc. I don't remember his exact responses, but they've been to the effect of "this recruitment could have some moving parts and likely will go down to the wire". I've not seen him state anything that was derogatory or insinuating dirty dealings. I would actually be surprised if he used the word "dirty" as that has some pretty serious implications that I doubt he'd have first hand knowledge of (and thus he'd probably lack confidence in going that far with his statements). That said, I could have missed it. But everything I've seen from him or Rabby is just that IU isn't recruiting him, or IU isn't on his CS's short list, or that the recruitment may be complicated (or other generic terms like that).

I'm not sure from what I read that his "family" is a better source of guidance than Barnes. Barnes appears to have given a kid some stability who might or might not have been headed for trouble if he'd stayed at home and not moved to Ft Wayne and lived with Barnes.

Thank you for stopping by and adding some truth to the mix.

Now who's the bigger idiot though....people who start rumors or the Purdue fans that believe them? Hahaha.

yeah I'm sure her "mission" was to get two people I've never heard of following her.

PB, you could say that about all athletes, but it happens all the time. Look at these million dollar pros that hold out for $160 million when they are being offered $150 million.

That's kinda funny, though. LOL!

Shoulda known.... You have no idea the stuff brothers will do when one is purdue the other iu. Only been going on nearly 35 years now. I got the personal satisfaction of texting him the link about Davis yesterday so ha

Brantley as in our Assistant Coach? That's a decent follow. I'm not on twitter to see if that is who it is.

she's a cal reporter. I'm going to guess she doesn't give two shits about follows from the purdue coaching staff.

That's $10mil though.

At the end of the day, what does a recruit cost...$250K?

Use your head here.

Barnes is his LEGAL guardian. Barnes is his family. He is supposed to influence his decisions. The NCAA doesn't get to meddle with family decisions. And they don't get to choose a parent's vocation or who their associates are. From my understanding, Swanigan is not yet 18 years old. He must have a guardian's signature to enroll in any school.

Roosevelt Barnes is legally his father. He adopted Caleb.

Um, Roosevelt Barnes is legally Caleb Swanigan's father. He adopted him. Barnes IS his family. It almost seems like you are trying to make this appear dirty. If you're going to toss out potentially damaging opinions, try to be sure you have the proper information before posting.

Where did you hear this Heller? I'm not saying your wrong, just the first time I'very ever heard it or seen it in print. I know he is the "legal guardian" as others have said, but I did not know RB legally adopted him.

At least you admit you have no clue what you are speaking on.

There is a big difference between legal guardian and legally adopted. I would think it would be stated in articles that RB is his adopted father rather than legal guardian. Makes it much clearer and less room for speculation. If he is just the legal guardian, gives me the impression that he wanted to find a way to finish his HS career at HHS.... Where if he is legally adopted, that is a different story.

In interviews I've seen, CS refers to Barnes as "dad". Whether he is legally adopted or not, it's clear what CS thinks of his relationship with Barnes.

I understand what you are saying, but there is a huge difference. Having kids that play HS sports, I've seen lots of kids use their aunts, grandparents, friends, etc.... as a legal guardian to attend a certain school. While I understand he lives with RB, there is a huge difference and perception if he is adopted. Especially since RB is affiliated with a sports agency.
