Maybe this has been discussed, but what does everyone think about Eastern subbing in for Vince? Seems like he would do alright and not have to have the ball in his hands as much.

This is a new and exciting topic!

Sarcasm aside, this has been discussed numerous times and hasn't gone well and threads have been deleted because of it. Curious question, your first post is about a topic that raises "heat" among some of the posters here, is that purely by accident?

Of course it depends on match-ups, but Nojel can certainly play some 3 and 4 if needed. If Byrd could play the 4 then Nojel can. I was at the Rutgers game and was most impressed by his rebounding. He really got up for some boards and he was boxing out very effectively. With that said, I still really like his upside at the point.

You may be on to something. I have not seen any sight of the few that keep bring the subject up.

I'm kinda new here too, so I'm not aware of your previous discussions. Sorry if I fed into something.

Didn't mean to stir anything up, just don't travel this board very much and hadn't seen anything about it.

The rotation is simple but effective.

Haarms spells Haas and VE
Cline spells Dakota and CE
Eastern spells PJ

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Certain match-ups might dictate more minutes for Nojel, but he's not playing forward. Having the ball in his hands is what he was recruited for.

I was just curious and didn't mean to come off sounding accusing. With the amount of trolls we get here with the sole purpose of stirring things up, perhaps I am not as "trusting" as I once was.

Carry on.

DJ Byrd played 4 not because he can, but because things were THAT BAD. Our current roster is not so depleted that we have to put a 6'6" to play a position he is too short and outweighed to do so. Making him to play an undersized and underweighted 4 would actually endanger him, putting him at risk of serious injury.

Just feel like he is losing a year on the bench.

Nojel is NOT losing a year. He is playing and gaining valuable experience. We need him next year when he will get to really shine. Frankly I'm not so keen on starting freshmen. If he can handle it, good. But they really need an adjustment period if they can afford it.

He weighs as much as Vince and is really strong. Nojel could easily play the 4 if need be. I’d like to see him post up and play under the bucket more. He’s a great rebounder and pretty crafty around the basket.

Haarms is doing a fine job backing up both Isaac and Vince, which is good because he needs more minutes than he can get only backing up one position.

I agree with thadoc. Nothing wrong with guards posting up smaller defenders if the defense allows it. In fact, to me, our recent improvement in rebounding has been that everyone is both boxing out better and getting more rebounds, especially the guards. I love the way this team is playing now and with how everyone has adjusted and settled in to their roles. Matt has done a very good job this year to date.

Why would you not be trusting on this board? We are all brothers and sisters here. Now let's pray.

Any idea why Taylor isn’t getting 5-8 minutes a game?
was wondering the same thing

A 6-6 to play a position he is too short and outweighed to do ... and you didn't mean Eifert?

Now that we're playing Big Ten teams with Big Ten fronts and Big Ten whistles, you'll routinely see why Taylor should have been getting more minutes to develop in preconference (wasn't Nebraska a clue?) and why Ewing could have helped. Alternating 7-footers and Vince won't be enough when the zebras take over (like with Nebraska). Sparty regularly employs five bigs. Three start. Can't ask guards to always play like they're 6-8. That'll mean more fouls, then legs will fail come March, if not sooner.

Probably because the game is too fast for him. Always has been. He misses layups and defensive rotations.

If he gets better there's minutes but he's not playing well enough to earn them. Imo

The game is always too fast for someone who gets insufficient game time, let alone being held until the final 3 minutes.

but in the WUG the games were faster and he did great. No question he is rusty...but a big question is what can he bring. Matt sees him everyday, but he went from missing an alley oop on one end to race down the court on another end and get the board. His lack on help on a drive was a duplicate of a few others. Where he is and what he is at this moment may not be where he could be or will be next month. I know Matt sees him everyday and obviously knows best...but it was interesting that for the first time in a LONG while he got his playing time before the game was settled and so that was a good sign.

I am far from anti-Taylor, my post wasn't intended for that tone. I hope he does show improvement in all areas and becomes a contributor. Im just saying right now I don't understand the clamoring for more time. Painter did play him in the first half so maybe he is getting closer but the other players are better right now

The reasons WHY you would play him more (and this is coming from not seeing practice) is that he showed a LOT of promise in the WUG. He and Haarms bring more quickness than when Haas is playing. THAT provides a scenario that few can duplicate and "could" be a problem for teams that depend on a dribble drive and play 5 behind the line that can shoot. None of this is to suggest that he should play in front of Haarms or Haas, but there has to be 5-8 minutes of quality time for most teams Purdue has played. Now, that was real quick off the top of my head, but sufficient reasons. What I don't know is how well is he doing in practice...and how long can he go? Those that saw him in the WUG believed that he would play a lot, but after injury he hasn't and so some questions remain. I'm certainly not down on Matt, but I do have lingering questions.

He really looked lost on defense. Kind of concerning for a guy that has been with the program as long as he has.

not sure what to think since there were a few what appeared to be lapses in help D on drives against Nebraska. I wasn't sure that with the clock...Matt made a calculation that they were not going to foul or give up the three ball that led to hugging the player they were guarding instead of helping. It is also true that Jacquil was taken out immediately after which is indicative that Jacquil was expected to provide help D in the lane. Jacquil never got any minutes or very few minutes in all of Purdue blowouts…almost the same as Luce. This is a kid that played well this summer and really does have limited game experience. I want to see more of him in the competitive part of the game before I draw many conclusions
