Have a question about a situation that happened in the Purdue baseball game today. Here's the situation. Purdue is leading 1-0 in the 2nd inning. Illinois has 2 outs, runners at 1st and 3rd, and the #9 hitter is up with a 1-2 count. The runner at 1st attempts to steal 2nd, Purdue's catcher throws down to attempt to get the runner at 2nd. The runner was safe. In the mean time, the runner for 3rd breaks for home and steals it easily.
Why in the world did Purdue throw to 2nd in that situation? Seems to be poor strategy to me. With the 9 hole hitter up with two strikes and two outs, it seems to me that Purdue would have a better chance retiring him than risking a throw to 2nd and giving up a run.
So for the baseball strategists out there, was throwing through to 2nd on that play as bad of strategy as I think it was? (The 9 hole hitter ended up striking out fwiw).
