He gone.X-UNC-Purdue-WV
No chance here. I hate being negative too.
He made the decision he thought was best for his own future. Not sure why there's a predisposition to think every kid that doesn't pick Purdue is making a poor life decision. Would have been a nice player... good luck to him. Maybe he'll get to play against Purdue in the B1G challenge in a couple years.Guess he's cool with being recruited over.
Meh. I would have been OK getting him, but no big deal losing him either.Guess he's cool with being recruited over.
I wrote about Painter's track record with 3 star or unranked big men in the Haarms thread, so I won't repeat all of it here. Suffice to say it is not good, with guys like Bade, Tacos, Hale and Lawson while Calasan was probably the best 3 star big man he has recruited.
However, I must admit that I am intrigued with schools like Xavier, WVU and UNC. If we land him, hopefully he will be the exception that breaks the rule of CMP and 3 star big men.

If that's the case, I would think Painter would have known about that from conversations with his high school coach and wouldn't have been recruiting him. I don't think CMP wants classroom deadbeats on the team anymore than you or me.Maybe he's not big on academics. Hence UNC.

You might not be far ff. Yes, they caught one professor in one subject. Think that is all there was? Sorry, but I will bet there a number of other profs and subjects that are custom tailored for athletes. sad.Was just joking... kind of. I'm sure he can do just fine in the classroom. It will still always be in the back of my mind when UNC comes up though.
Holy cow was that a fortunate whiff for Painter.Sterling Manley = Amir Williams
It was largely expected that Tacos was going to grow to be 7' or even up to 7'2. He is a totally different player with an additional 3 to 4 inches of height. He becomes a clogger in the lane with a sweet touch...more reminiscent of of a Euro big man. He would have been able to provide something totally different than what he did at Purdue...of which he was a good role player for Purdue. Proud to have had him as a Boiler.
I don't ever remember hearing that about him. Tacos had decent accolades out of HS, and he does seem like a genuinely good guy, but playing the game is about getting results and ultimately, one could argue that he ended up being a waste of a scholarship. Maybe there weren't many other bigs on Purdue's 2010 radar (can't remember), but he certainly did not meet anyone's expectation levels for him as a college player.

Early on, everything appeared that Travis would continue to develop in to a mid to high level 4 star type player. He was a tall kid with a good touch and was able to get up and down the floor. As I said, he simply stopped growing and that stunted a bit of his development. If you consider that a wasted scholarship, then I'd hate to see your comments about Taykor or any other kid who is the 9-12th player on a roster.
In his limited time, Taylor has already shown more ability to defend (can block shots) and rebound than Tacos ever displayed. I just remember so many opposing post players (Derrick Nix, in particular) being able to back him down and score so easily, with almost no resistance whatsoever from him. That's not an indicator of a big that should be playing on scholarship for a B1G program, even as a reserve.
Very true but again...put Tacos in a 7'2 frame and add about 15 lbs. Suddenly he isn't just being back down and he is more of a threat inside the paint. Instead, he was a tweeter type Euro post that wasn't quite atheistic enough to defend away from the lane but not big enough to really bump inside with the bigger players.
Still enjoyed Travis while he was at Purdue and he was a great represented for the program.
I don't think he was an average athlete, but I hate to start that again. He was a good kid that got a lot of attention as a junior in high school and he didn't grow into the player many thought he might become. Had he been on a "better" team, he too would have been a much "better" player. Good kid...good representative...player that never jelled...I never heard anyone say that he was going to be 7'2" tall, and also, he never was, so that hypothetical means nothing. He was 6'8/6'9, at BEST an average athlete, and couldn't stop any bigs with post skills from mid-to-high major programs. He's a nice guy, but he was not a good player for a high-major program.
Good kid, in hindsight probably should have been a walk-on. I think Painter has learned from some of his early offer mistakes.Travis gave everything he had, stayed all 4 years, no trouble, seemed like a great guy, so he wasn't the best on the team and didn't kick ass on the floor. Painter played him and the guy did his best, all you can ask for. Glad he was a Boiler
Yes, the talk was that he was in the 6-9, 6-10 range as a high school sophomore and that he was still growing. No one complained when he committed, except for the complaints that Purdue had to wait 2 years for him to join the team. The rating services had him rated very high at the time. He obviously stopped growing and did not meet early expectations. But blame biology, not the coach or the kid.I never heard anyone say that he was going to be 7'2" tall, and also, he never was, so that hypothetical means nothing. I'm not going to trash the guy, but let's just be honest here. The fact that Travis topped out at 6'10" instead of 7'2" is not why he fell below expectations. 6'10" is plenty tall enough to be a successful big in college. There is no reason to dump on a guy that graduated years ago so i'm just going to leave it at that.
Yep, with a very limited wingspan. I suspect that Painter learned to be cautious about projecting growth based on him.Travis was 6'10" in 3" platform shoes.
