I don't think Swanigan comes to Purdue to sit and I highly doubt Matt would have that happen. As good as the players Purdue has coming back, Swanigan is a difference maker for the program in all regards.
G: Hill
G: Davis
F/G: Edwards
PF: Swanigan
C: Hammons
I think this is how the season starts off with the exhibition but could very easily transition to this lineup:
G: Davis
G: Mathias
G: Edwards
PF: Swanigan
C: Hammons
I will remind everyone that, even against a quality PG like Ferrell from IU, he can't guard two different men. Painter would find the best matchup between Davis, Mathias, and Edwards...and allow that player to bring the ball up. If Ferrell switches to the guard bringing the ball up, you simply have a second player there to start the offense. Once again, the player who initializes the offense isn't as critical in Painter's motion offense as it is an overall body of work to make smart decisions, putting other players in the correct positions, and making smart open floor decisions when the tempo can be pushed in transition opportunities.
Personally, the rotation will probably look something like this:
Starters/Main Subs: Hill, Davis, Edwards, Swanigan, Hammons, Haas, Mathias, Stephens,
Potential for decent minutes depending on foul trouble/having a solid game: Thompson, Smotherman, Cline, Taylor
Players who will need a year/extreme spot minutes: Weatherford, Toyra, Eifert
That first setup is a solid 8 man rotation that allows for the best 5 along with giving the solid bench plenty of minutes to be involved in the game and contribute in ways that allow Purdue to be a strong team. I would venture to say some will have an issue with Basil being set in that second tier of players, but what he brings to the team in rebounding and transition...Edwards and Davis simply do better and do it better on a consistent basis. Having Swanigan at the 4 along with Edwards ability to play that position, means he has to slide to more of a perimeter player where he has to beat out players like Davis, Edwards, Mathias, and Stephens. That's not to say Basil isn't a very good player and that is why I added the portion that if he is showing a solid game, as he did at times at the end of the year, he will play extended minutes and Coach Painter will work the lineup to allow him to play. If that happens, can you imagine this lineup:
G: Davis (6'5)
G Edwards (6'7)
F: Smotherman (6'9)
PF: Swanigan (6'10)
C: Hammons/Haas (7'+)
That is a scary big linuep that could be used to simply out bully other teams on the boards as Purdue would be putting 5 players would are known for the rebounding skills.
