Take a break from hoops and enjoy a deep-dive look at spring practice No. 11. There is a scrimmage tomorrow morning.

1. Today’s practice was brisk, lasting about 90 minutes. And the players were just in shirts, shorts and helmets. The offense has looked pretty good most of the spring, as the defense has dealt with myriad injuries along the front seven. Wouldn’t be shocked to see the offense have the upper hand in tomorrow’s scrimmage.

2. C Viktor Beach was working with the full squad, though he wasn’t on first- or second-team. Still, it's a good sign. Jeff Brohm thinks Beach may be a full-go the last week of spring drills. The 6-4, 305-pound Beach is a massive man. Purdue needs to get him healthy.

3. Purdue had Class of 2020 DT Fintan Brose at practice today. The 6-4, 280-pounder passes the eyeball test. Brose is from the Pittsburgh area (Greensburg, Pa.) and attends Hempfield Area High. He was with his parents, who said their next stop is Vanderbilt. This was Brose’s first visit to Purdue. He has lots of MAC offers.

4. QB Elijah Sindelar was not suited up today but was around in sweats. No word on why he wasn’t in action. Don’t think it’s anything of note. Expect him in the scrimmage on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Jack Plummer ran the first-team, as Nick Sipe was still out dealing with a back issue. QB coach Brian Brohm has his signal-callers handle the ball between their legs like a basketball. Good for coordination and agility. Also interesting to note that true freshman early enrollee Paul Piferi wins every sprint with the QBs.

5. Talking to CB Dedrick Mackey after practice, and he mentioned the secondary is playing more man coverage than it did in the past. CB coach Greg Brown was non-committal when asked about coverage tendencies. Something to keep an eye on.

6. Guess who was at practice today? One of the greatest athletes the Lafayette area ever has produced: Lafayette Jeff QB Doug Downing, who was in town visiting and wanted to watch practice. He was a Parade All-American in 1982 who had his pick of colleges. Downing chose Purdue. He redshirted in 1983 then competed for the job in 1984, losing out to Jim Everett. Then, after Everett left, Downing got recruited over in 1986 when Jeff George arrived. Downing lives in Toledo and coaches prep football. He has worked as a college assistant in the past.

7. Another visitor of note was Oscar Brohm, the patriarch of the Brohm family. Can't imagine there is a program in the nation with as much family involvement as Purdue's.

8. The first-team offensive line has remained pretty stable: LT Grant Hermanns, LG Jimmy McKenna, C Sam Garvin, RG Mark Stickford, RT Matt McCann. The second team was LT Marc Roland, LG DJ Washington, C Bryce Brown, RG Alex Criddle, RT Spencer Holstege.

9. ESPN.com writer Adam Rittenberg took in practice. He is working on a story on Rondale Moore.

10. The staff had Jackson Anthrop, Rondale Moore, Amad Anderson, Jr., and Dedrick Mackey working as punt return men.
