Sources: Purdue plans to bring back Darrell Hazell for fourth season in 2016

That should fire up the season ticket base to break an all time record low point.
3 D1 wins in three seasons - what a joke.

Bonuses all around, Capt Morgan!
Can hardly wait for the onslaught of email and snail mail flyers begging for money to build the new football complex.
Get real

On second thought, let's just extend the current regime and make him "Coach for Life." We did win A Big Ten home game. #Progress.
Careful there - the Fickle Fan Police are going to chide you for your lack of support.

I just read that. With same OC, it will be bleh indeed. For the record this is not that Purdue "believes" in the vested one, but the BoT, President, AD, etc. won't pay the buyout. Just like Hope, they will probably wait one year too long.

So next year isn't his lame duck year the following is?

They can chide. I can show receipts that I ponied up for this quality entertainment. Why? I am clearly stupid. Or maybe just bored. I am not there all the time but I count toward paid attendance.

Gosh, I am shocked. Morgan had demonstrated such a strong commitment to winning football in the past. I imagine Hazell will get a bonus and a promotion, just as Morgan did last year.

In other news, Versyp has been signed to a lifetime contract with women's basketball despite taking a once national contender and driving it to the bottom of the Big Ten.

Good thing Morgan can do whatever he wants without having to worry about ticket revenue. He is a Vice President, you know!

I figured this would be the case. Sadly, reading the Internet, I had my hopes up that they would make a change. Hazell at least has to change his coordinator(s), right?

“More power to him. I like Darrell. Having been a coach for more than 40 years, I hate to see any coach get fired.”

Translation: Stick it to 'em, Darrell!

In a war between a penny pinching administration and coaches out to get theirs, the fans and players alike are but collateral damage.

So this will effectively kill our recruiting forever. We are now what IU became. Purdue will be an un-winnable place.
Like I have mentioned before..............3 bottom BIG teams have an ave of about 20 recruits already!!!!!!!We have 8! This will guarantee that we will have to raid the JC circuit just to get a class of 16-18 committs!

If the trend continues and Purdue achieves 1 or 2 more wins this season, Hazell will return. If Purdue does not win any additional games, then Burke should be immediately fired with all of his pension confiscated and distributed to the fan base his malfeasance has caused. TIC - just venting

This is shitty news.

That said, we don't have to listen to idiots trying to hire head coaches on here anymore.

Wait - since football will be a non-revenue sport in 2016, does that mean Burke will build a new stadium for the program?

New best post ever!

Yes, in one more year, Morgan and the BOT will have successfully made Purdue football into a non-revenue sport, so then the south end zone project, and maybe even lights, will receive priority.

Yes, but we (Purdue fans) deserve it for blaming Tiller and Hope for what Morgan, the BT, and Cordova wrought.

Daniels said last week that no staff could win at this level with our facilities, which means Hazell won't be fired unless there's a melt down in this last month. I'm okay with that given we wouldn't be able to hire a good replacement with Morgan still in the AD chair, and I'm tired of blaming coaches for failing to compete, with one arm tied behind their back, due to the incompetence of the Purdue administration.

Yes, Tiller and Hope were both fighting with the same hand behind their back and probably (esp. Tiller) received more criticism than they deserved. However, I'm not sure I follow the logic that Purdue fans deserve a crappy team because of it. Blaming fans is pointless and misguided. These are shortcomings of leadership. Show me one program that has undergone this steep of a decline period, with 3 consecutive seasons at rock bottom, that has maintained unwavering fan support.

THis is odd - Did this situation must happen? Did Mitch just discover this after how many years at the helm? Did Morgan mislead ole' Mitch while he was off building a Soccer and baseball complex and a new aquatic center. (All non revenue sports)

My point was that we should have been blaming Morgan long ago, and had we at the time, maybe his a$$ on the hot seat -- rather than Tiller or Hope's -- would have resulted in Morgan doing more to support football back when the program still had some momentum going.

Agree, Mitch has effectively admitted, without spelling it out, that he gave zero thought to the football program until just recently. Did Morgan mislead Mitch? I don' think so. Morgan, to his credit, is the one who got the BOT to just recently cut the university's overhead charge on the AD from $4M+ to $2M.

Burke has absolutely buried the football program. That's his legacy for me. Anyone can spend other people's money foolishly on shiny objects that do not provide any return.

I guess we just look at things differently. To me, the only time any of the above individuals are on the hot seat is when their boss has them there. Fans pointing out where the problems are is message board and water cooler fodder. All the man in charge should hear is "the football team is struggling, fans are unhappy, revenues are dwindling, need to figure out how to right the ship". From there the highly compensated leaders need to figure out how to get it done and who (if necessary) is the fall guy.
I think we can agree that it is unclear exactly where the buck stops in this equation, particularly when the AD is one of the ones in question and you've had 3 presidents in that time span, none of which had much vision for athletics.

Actually, it's 100% the fans fault. We allow and ultimately encourage mediocrity (and worse). It's in how and how much we give. I am including everyone from the huge boosters to the students. Anyone or all could make a stand. Apathy and excuses of the fans built this situation. And it didn't happen in the last 10 years.

Why spend all that money on facilities and keep the same coaching staff. It don`t make sense, they can`t recruit, and they have lost a hell of lot of the fan base. Hire a new coach and staff and promise him the 60mil. on upgrading the facilities.

I kinda think that this news is more because of all the other coaching positions that have opened up. With Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, USC(e), USC(w), Hawaii, UCF, Miami, and Virginia Tech already out there (and there could be plenty more coming still.....Indiana? Georgia? Texas? West Virginia? Heck, maybe even Nebraska?), quite frankly, Purdue would be dredging the bottom of the barrel for a decent coach. Wait one more year and competition for a good coach might be significantly lessened.

At least I will be close to Gainesville next year on a permanent basis!!!!!! Finally spend some hard earned money on some real football.......................

I partially disagree with this. I do get where you're going with it and it mostly makes sense...but a few points.
1. Purdue isn't and wasn't going to compete with USCe or w, Miami or Virginia Tech for coaches. Those guys that would go to those schools would likely not consider us. That's fine, as we'd likely go to the MAC again for our next coach.
2. We aren't a worse job than any of the current BIG openings. Minnesota is not some sleeping giants. Kill has them at their peak. Maryland COULD be a sleeping giant but the Under Armour guy doesn't want to bail the AD out of its debt issue. That said, WHEN they start winning, he'll support the program more and more. Illinois....couldn't pay me to coach there.
3. I think Babers, Campbell and Fleck would have been our likely pool of candidates. I think 2 of those guys would and could have some success here.

As if there would not be any other program openings next year.
