Smith

I know people have mix feelings about the guys who run Sleepers Media but they said it best - first part of the season was Braden trying to run sets and get guys involved, now he is just hunting for himself and put the team on his back.

This is going to be like that Carsen team, if he gets on a heater come tourney time, watch out.

Beef, this is an out of left field team question and I’d also like @tjreese to weigh in, but….

Would it be crazy to think Braden leaves for the nba after this year? I would say he’s not quite there to be in the first round. But some chatter on social media about it (no high profile guys), but was a bit premature (IMO), to think he’d leave after this year.

He's got a lot more help (potentially) than Carsen did.

Carsen was a shooter primarily and scorer next. In the tourney he did what he already did previously but made shots at a high rate in every game but one I think. Braden is more complete with all the things he does. Purdue wants Braden to score when he has the ball, but not near like Carsen because THAT was a LOT of Carsen's job. Braden has a much fuller plate of things outside of scoring that he must do and so "other" things are on his mind in addition to just scoring.

During his freshmen year I told Dustin (who was a shooter turned Pg) that when Zach was gone it would be easier for Braden to improve his shooting since it would become more of his job whereas his freshmen year it was to absorb all the defensive pressure and "wait" with the pressure until he could get the ball to Zach or some set and so "shooting" was an after thought that required the mind to change from who needs the ball to just shoot the ball. I posted such a couple of years ago.

Relative to pro ball, I have never asked any intentions and that goes back to Bruce Parkinson when Austin (Dustin's pg in high school) was being recruited. I remember Bruce saying he would read things and it was as though someone was sitting in his living room writing on forums ( I have an idea who). That told me that parents want a private, personal side to their lives and I understand that. It was either last year or the year before I saw Ginny early in the gym sitting where she sits and started to go over to see her when Braden who had been out on the court came over to visit with her and so I stopped and turned around so they could visit. Braden left to go back on the court and I went over to see her and told her I was coming earlier until I saw Braden come over and she thanked me. Basketball cuts into family time and so I understood that moment. I can say however and you know that Braden was playing out in California last summer with some pros and overseas players. I also believe that Braden wants to be a pro AND wants to win a championship. Whether those things go together or not remain to be seen and no doubt there will be "things" balanced, but for a pass first pg that can score just as well but prefers helping others score...it isn't hard to imagine that the "team" like pass first will weigh heavily on his mind as his "natural" inclination... :)

I still think he's a 4 yr college player

Are there any mock drafts that have him in 1st or 2nd round? I haven't seen any. Seems highly unlikely he goes pro before 4 years. Is it possible that he could find the right fit and make a living in the NBA? Sure, but I think it's much more likely he makes a living somewhere else in the world.

Also, don't forget starting later this year, schools will be able to legally pay players. I'm sure he will get a nice chunk of that $20.5 million PU has to spend.

I don’t follow NBA stuff to have a real opinion. I honestly think it depends on class and feedback from scouts. I am sure he will test the waters this off season. He has shown he can facilitate the offense and be pass first and he is showing he can put people in the blender and get buckets.

The Sleepers guys are clowns. I know they're running a business and the following that they've build is actually pretty impressive, but 80% of what they say is a combination of hot takes that are willfully stupid to get attention/clicks and hot takes based on ignorance.

Agreed. And the one guy (forget his name) literally always looks like he just woke up.

I don't really agree with this. They are a good view, and I find myself agreeing with a lot of their takes. They are also willing to make takes on the internet for a broad audience of fans of different teams, which does open themselves up to a lot of criticism of course.

The one thing they do that I see to generate viewers is include school logos for schools that they aren't talking about in the thumbnail images.

They bust their butts to attract followers. I don’t find them to be particularly well informed, probably because they cover such a broad range of teams. I also don’t think they have a very deep understanding of winning basketball and put too much stock in recruiting rankings and stats.

If you enjoy them that’s cool. I couldn’t handle the constant hot takes that are clearly, IMO, aimed at garnering reactions. Smart approach to help build a following, I just find it annoying.

They are 10x better than anyone running any Purdue site in both quality and quantity of coverage.

The question to ask is does his game translate well to the NBA game. After last year’s success many NBA analysts praised him but did not believe his game would translate well to the NBA. He runs the show for Purdue. He’s a modern day version of Scotty Skiles! He’s an awesome player. In saying that, would Scott Skiles be successful in the NBA today?

Admittedly when I talk about NBA analysts, those are the same people who loved Ivey but thought Edey would be a total bust. Edey was placed in the perfect situation in Memphis. A lot of success in the NBA is dependent on situations and combinations.

Ask yourself did Gillis go to Duke to improve his draft stock?

I believe Braden will remain in college all four years. But I’m brave enough and crazy enough to ask the question no other Purdue fan would dare ask. Will Braden play for Purdue all 4 years? I’ve read some rumors over the past 2 years that other teams/sponsors/agents have tried to pry him away. Look at GILLIS. No fan expected him to leave and transfer to Duke. What if Kansas or Duke or Oregon or Texas A&M came calling after this season and tried to pry Braden away?

I put this to you because I keep reading posts here that talk about players saying the guy is a legacy player. No wY would he ever consider going somewhere else. JJJ was supposed to be a sure thing. The same with Mount and Parkinson and Catchings. And then oops, they went somewhere else.

If Braden is offered twice as much money to play for some other school, would he remain loyal to Purdue and Painter or would it be a business decision and in his best interests to play elsewhere?

I have read too many times where players transfer and they say they had to look out for their best interests. What was Catchings excuse?

Something else to consider. If Braden decides to come back to Purdue for a 4th year, will that cause one of our current young guards to leave? Or will they be fine being a backup for another year when out of high school they were labeled as a2 and done and definitely going to the pros after two years. Would a certain legacy guard remain for a third year knowing his role would be as a backup ? And knowing Painter has signed a guard for both 2025 and 2026?

I don’t have the answers. I’m just posing the logical question. If coming out of high school everybody labeled you as a definite NBA player, and you were facing being a backup for 3 years at Purdue and guarantee you will ever start, would you stick around? That’s what will happen if Braden and Loyer play 4 years at Purdue. Their current backup will most likely leave.

I believe Braden will stay at Purdue for his final year. But I am just as certain some other college will tempt him with more money to transfer.

I am reminded of a player who was a 4 year player at Villinova. His senior year he was their 6th man he was smart but not very athletic. He had a nice tourney performance and was a first round draft pick by the Bucks. His last name was vinnysomething. I’m not good with names . He ended up having a decent nba career. The same could happen to smith.

I also remember Ivey, big dog. And Swanigan. Their coach encouraged all three to go pro early. They followed his advice.

That poses one last question. What will Painter do? Will he encourage Braden to leave early?

Didn’t read all this. But I literally asked the other day if smith would go to the nba after this year, so sorry, you’re not the one and only fan to ask that…I beat ya to it.

I hope for selfish reasons he comes back to Purdue and not the nba (I think he will be back). NIL helps out a lot in this situation and I think he is one of the highest paid next year in all of bball (as he should be).

BUT if he has a team guaranteeing him first round, he’s gotta go.

Also, Dante Divencenzo is who you are thinking of from Villanova. HE IS STILL PLAYING IN THE NBA LOOOOL. He is only 27 and just signed a $50M contract with the Knicks last year and plays for the TWolves after a trade he was involved in for KAT. Cmon Wole, Google is your friend and takes 5 seconds.
