SMITH IS THAT GUY

Have you guy's seen Video of Maddox Smith a 7th grader may shatter his brother's records. Dustin Smith put on twitter. He is a younger Braden clone. Someone should put them on this thread. I honestly would offer him today. Not much needed to improve on from now or until 2030. Kid is a stud and could probably start for 95% of the high school programs in Indiana now and be a star.

His shooting form reminds me of Braden's.

So I've written about Maddox before and will just add a few things. When Braden was a senior in high school I had just met Ginny and was sitting near her and Dustin. I started asking about Maddox and she told me that sometimes it is scary just what he sees on the court and the questions he asks...very high IQ! I see him at Mackey with mom and dad almost every game and believe he is around 5'10" right now...could be off an inch, but he is tall and Dustin says he still has growing to do. I told mom she is going to have to scare the girls away because he is such a good looking kid. Lastly, I keep telling Maddox and Dustin I have to get down there to see him and Dustin tells me (when Maddox wasn't around) to not come down for a school game, but wait for AAU and my guess is that with even better players he is even better. I told Maddox he was his "own" player and to be himself and he nodded in which I took that he had been told that before.

With Braden's play at Purdue and these influential years in Mackey it would be natural to think Purdue is in good shape here.

Thank you for putting this up. I was sent a season long highlight clip of him playing up 2 or 3 years in AAU. He made pass after amazing pass without really trying to score as a first option. Hard to show a floor generals game in a box score. His dad says he is coming for Braden's records. Kid wants Braden to make that challenging. Thanks again

As long as Braden is really 6 foot 😏
He is pretty close if not nudging 6' I guess. Looks to have one really tall kid in Maddox's class and another taller than Maddox. Some of his fade away and the behind the back pass are elite for a seventh grader...

Good luck to Maddox over the course of his career…hope he continues to grow physically, mentally and in skill! Maybe we can see another Smith running the show for us in the future !

His skill level looks incredible for his age.

I recall reading about the process Braden had to go through to build his body to be capable of being a great d-1 player and I would imagine his brother would have to travel that same road as he grows up. At least he will have the road map on how to do that.

Ok I started to look into this a bit more and smith has just as good if not better numbers (also shooting %) than a lot of the first teamers over the last 15 years…

And I don’t get why Mark Sears is expected to be on the 1st team. Against LSU, he sat the whole second half…this was the second time this year. How can one be an all American when you’re helping you’re team out by sitting out multiple chunks of the game?

I think Oates sat him because of defense, but your point is well taken. I'm not sure what the voters prioritize......Sears is good, no doubt, and can absolutely go off at times where he's almost unguardable.

Smith needs a little more credit for being a two-way player. If the 3-pt FG gets back to normal, Purdue could maybe make another little run......we shall see.

I wrote a couple of weeks ago that the ceiling was higher than last year, but the floor is lower, and no question there is more variation and on the average this team is not as good as last year. If the team plays a typical game the first week and then gets towards the magical level...this team "could" surprise a lot of people.

Would very much enjoy the surprise to be a deep tourney run 😊

I agree. Their improvement in team defense could definitely carry them if their shooting is a bit off in the first or second rounds. But if both their offense and defense show up, with their team experience and leadership, there is no reason why they cannot reach another F4. And I believe they will be more ready and eager to again play a team with their kryptonite. But one at a time for now, and first things first, let’s defend as the B1G Conference regular season champs.

TJ, explain what you mean by ceiling being higher than last year? Do you mean the perceived ceiling on last year's team at this same time in the season? The only way it could be actually higher is to win the championship game. I'm guessing that isn't what you meant.

I don't think anyone thinks this year's team is as likely to get to the championship game as last year's team at this point in the season, but maybe I'm wrong. Last year at this time we were number 1 in the country or for sure top 3 and looking at a number 1 seed. I don't see how this year's team could possibly have a higher ceiling than that. But maybe I'm not understanding what you mean by "ceiling".
