Here is what he can do if he doesn't want to answer to the public...he can retire effective immediately. Or, he can start his own company. Or, he can work for a privately held corporation. Or, he can work as a midlevel employee anyplace.
But in his role as athletic director of a large division one public university, he is to be held accountable by the media, and his constituents (Board of Trustees, Purdue students, alumni, JPC members, season ticket holders, etc...)
There are plenty of jobs where you don't have to answer to people. There are some jobs where you have to answer to people. CEO of a publicly traded corporation and elected government official are two, and I would posit that athletic director at a large division one public university is another.
