Shrews to ND

Good for him. Figured it was happening when I saw some Penn State names hopping in the portal. I mentioned this on the transfer portal thread but guess that got nuked?

Wow. Thats a blow to the PSU program. Im surprised by the move.
I think this years PSU team had a bunch of their main dudes on a COVID year. They were going to suck next year, so he had to make the move out of there now or he could get stuck in basketball purgatory like Collins at NW.

That and the Indiana roots and it's a no brainier IMO.

I could see him and Matt teaming up a bit like Knight and some of his asst. in the past where they sell their program number one, but if the recruit is not sure about the Big, style or whatever to consider the other due to the coach and player relationships...usage whatever. Not that IU gets a lot of instate players, but it may get more difficult. Where ya wanna go kid...Big East, Big Ten or ACC????

It's my understanding he was nudged out. ND has had 3 losing seasons in the past six years with only 1 NCAA Tournament win.
Yeah, that's my understanding as well. They've struggled a bit the last few years, and I think age may also have been a factor, especially with recruiting, although he's only 64.

And he is a Cathedral guy. So he’s all about Casino Night already.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory. Let's see the proof.

7 messages? No, two coaches that like each other would never help the other second to themselves. Similar talk happened a few decades ago with Knight and previous asst. If it happens or doesn't it makes no difference to me. Networking is never in play in anything or is it? Coaches in the stands in high school would never share things about other teams and player specifics while scouting.

Matt, Jimmy Stallion the 3 you and I and a few more were recruiting... I had to pull my offer since I got a 2 that filled the needs I had and allows the 3 I currently have to provide his strengths as well. I explained it to him moments ago after the 2 verballed to me and his offer was contingent on who commits first. I told him he had a good list of schools and that if he liked how I treated players and ran the team, he ought to give you a long look to see if he can get all he wants at Purdue. Just thought I would give you a heads up...he seems like a gym rat. Good luck if he sets an official.

Thanks Micah. Catch you in a couple of weeks at the clinic. I see they have you for an hour Wednesday talking about playing out of the post with a guard. Ooops, gotta go Gene is calling...

Shrews is a good dude and a good coach. ND is one of the places I was hoping he wouldn’t land, mainly because he’ll do well recruiting that area and the Indy area. But it’s better there than him waiting a couple of years and ending up at IU when Woodson hangs them up or gets them hung up for him.

Your response was completely predictable. If I have 0 posts and you say the moon landing was a hoax, does that mean anything in terms of reality if I ask for verification?

Please cite your conversation. Again, I just asked for proof. If this is a real conversation, you can name the real people and we can verify.

I owe you nothing. If you don't believe that has and will go on...fine! I had no conversation with Knight I repeated what was common knowledge or at least thought decades ago...I did tell you about high school coaches though. in 1975 Knight yanked Jim Wisman onto the bench and it got attention. Not long after Paul Curtis (not sure how many years after) was an asst coach to Gene (Paul had coached at Crawfordsville????) and Paul supplied prospects pictures of the incident and the coaches at Indiana high schools turned on Curtis and Purdue. A couple of years later Curtis was arrested for shoplifting and was removed from Purdue. Coaches talk and you can believe anything you want because it isn't important to me or not what you want to believe.

I agree that it seems very likely that those type of conversations happen between two coaches who are close.

This is pure speculation, but I wonder if Matt and Micah will have similar conversations around guys already on Purdue’s roster. As a fifth year guy with potentially two years left, Brandon Newman will certainly look at whether he wants to stay at Purdue and fight for playing time. If not, reuniting with Micah at Notre Dame could be a great option. I know those two are close Same question for Mason if Zach returns.

I would be very surprised if Micah tried to poach anyone without talking to Matt but Purdue is going to have a roster crunch if Zach returns and Matt always wants the best for his players. I love Mason and Brandon but I could see both wanting and flourishing in larger roles than they are likely to get at Purdue. They could form a nice core for Micah to build off of over the next two years.

He has totally gutted the Penn State Program. He had to get out of town. They'll be starting from scratch next year.

Penn State was the tenth seed in the B1G tourney with their 5 leading scorers being seniors. No returner for next year averaged more than 4 points a game this year. If peaking at 10th place is success then,,,,,,,,,

For the record, Pat Chambers had a similar record in 2 of his last 3 years at Penn State.

A lot of programs start from scratch every year now. Not as big a deal as it used to be.

If Jameel Brown doesn't follow Shrews to ND would CMP be interested? I don't think he cracked their line up much if any.

Hmmm - would certainly be one to consider Painter reaching out to. Granted he is an east coast kid so wouldn’t be surprised seeing him stay out that way.

Not a primary ball handler and not nearly as developed as a scorer as Loyer. Not sure how he'd help in the short term.

Are you embarrassed by the way that you selected that data set? You should be. Finished a game out of fifth and two games out of second. I don't care enough to look but I'd wager it's been a while since PSU finished within two games of second place in the BT. Made it to the BTT title game and won an NCAAT game, when was the last time that happened?

BTW, I think Pat Chambers was a very good coach, but I'm not sure he did any of those things.

If Micah has a place and if Brandon wants to leave...Valpo is not that far from South Bend. I could definitely see that happening "if" Brandon and Micah have the same interest...

Don't think he played much either. Has some size and strength and can shoot, but when Purdue recruited him I thought he appeared slow on the couple of games on video...could shoot it back then

Okay I'll tray again.

He coached a team that was a 10 seed in the NCAA tournament (meaning 36-40th seeded team overall) whose 5 leading scorers where seniors and has nobody returning next year that averaged over 4 points per game.

Is that better?

It's hard to argue he left Penn State in a better position than when he took it over. I'd be pretty upset if I was a Penn State basketball fan (if there is such a thing).

I hate to admit that… but yes.

And TD Jesus is pretty friggin awesome, while I’m at it.
Potential networking of value. Wonder down the road if Butler, ND and Purdue want to return to the classic with IU or ND, Purdue, Louisville and Kentucky set it up....
