Should I keep my expectations in check?

In a similar vein to my recent post about whether I should drink the Kool-Aid when it comes to the upcoming men's BB season, I have a strong compulsion to give in to the Star Wars fervor.

I was born in 1974 so as you would imagine my life was Star Wars until my teens. I lived and breathed it and was in revived fanboy nirvana in 1999 when the first prequel came out. To say the prequels were a let down is a momnumental understatement. Some of my love for Star Wars (and a lot for Lucas) died with the prequels and I knew Lucas could never make sequels worthy of his original masterpieces (which he vowed he would never make, and he lived up to his promise). Along comes Disney and JJ Abrams (who's work I enjoy) and I can't help but hope/think/pray the new sequels will be AWESOME! But like with PU's sports teams, I find myself keeping my emotions in check so I don't have my heart totally ripped out.

What say you my fellow Boilermaker nerds (is that redundant?), should I give in to the Force or follow Tiller's advice and keep my expectations in check?

I think few movies could live up to the hype being generated for this one. Having said that, I think it's pretty clear they've adopted a back to basics approach. I'm excited to see it, and I think that like all star wars movies they will have the following mix:

1. a good core story (but don't start pulling on logic threads or it falls apart)
2. great special effects and cinematography
3. a sweeping "fairy tale" approach
4. one or two goofy kids characters or approaches that may work (pod racing) or may not (Jar-Jar)

You guys missed the Big One by a generation.
2001: A Space Odyssey was hauntingly ahead of its time, most notably in the capability of the on-board computer HAL. (Note that if you subtract one alphabet letter from IBM, you get HAL.)
After watching that movie I wrote a letter to Arthur C. Clarke (he wrote the book) addressed to his home in what was then called Ceylon. I told him that a rocket landing on the moon would not kick up little cloud-like plumbs of dust because the moon has no atmosphere. Every dust particle should rise and fall like a bullet out of a gun.
To my amazement, he responded a few weeks later to tell me that I was right. The letter had Ceylonese postage stamps.

That is a cool story, thanks for sharing. Star Wars is not really sci-fi in the typical vein (2001, Star Trek, etc...) just a fun swashbuckling epic romp that happens to be galactic in size!

It's a fairy tale set in space.

Which is fine.

OK, I am full on Star Wars kool-aid drinking. Reaction from last night's premier in LA were very good. Got my two tickets for the Friday night 11 PM showing at Indy southside (IMAX 3D). My GF is a Star Wars fan and we are so stoked. Dinner at Harry and Izzy's beforehand is the appetizer for what should be a great evening (dessert will be good too if you get my drift). May the Force be with you Knuckleheads!
