Sampson James in the Portal Again

It was reported he missed several practices while taking care of a personal matter. I hope he thanks Purdue for providing his full scholarship for a year while not doing anything in return!

If you look in the archives you will see a post made by a popular poster here that “speculated” that if Sampson didn’t play last fall, he probably never would play for Purdue!

I don’t recall any of our IU posters that come here shedding a tear when he left IU or wishing him well at his new school.

One door closes another door opens. Someone just moved up the depth chart.
More carries for Doerue, Downing and Mockobee.
Doerue’s carries aren’t gonna be affected by anything other than how healthy he is throughout the season.. no matter how underrated he is by Purdue fans

Unfortunately, it has been more of a revolving door at the position with nobody really staking any claim to it, much less being really good there. Horvath was great at times...Doerue has shown some flashes...but, that is it, and, neither were near good enough to overcome the poor blocking up front...not sure that there is anyone there still that is capable either unfortunately.

Who was the last "big-time" RB recruit that Purdue landed? Markell Jones? Knox was productive.

sounds like he wants guaranteed PT…everything is earned
If he was good enough for guaranteed PT, he would not have been in the portal...twice now...and, if he was not good enough to get guaranteed PT at Purdue with the lack of depth at the position, hard to imagine it happening anywhere, much less anywhere better.

Unfortunately the big time RB recruits have been big time busts. James, Murphy, McBurse, etc.

On this board I predicted that Charlie Spegal at IU would outgain James at Purdue.

Charlie crushed it with 19 carries at a 3.3 ypc clip. 🙃
I liked your guy better and was crushed here for saying it. Sampson either didn’t realize the year over year RB’s injury bug here or too dumb to look it up. He had chances for carries. Oh well, NEXT!!!

Would James be eligible to play elsewhere at this late date >
I was thinking this too. Did he decide too late yet again?

Either way, I think he has to sit out a year automatically since its his 2nd transfer (non-grad). Maybe that rule changed?

I feel for SJ. When he left IU, somebody close to Coach Allen told me what a difficult upbringing he had. I don't want to share all the details, but I'd say he had it as rough as Caleb Swanigan-if not worse. Let's all hope the young man gets things sorted out.

This is fact.

He's a good kid with a big heart, and I hope the very best for his future.

I don’t think that rule changed based on what was written here a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps he also has something else going on that’s more serious and maybe it’s actually “between the ears“… if so, that’s more important that he gets that figured out because he has talent and if he doesn’t take care of the problems in his personal life if there are any that’s not good because he doesn’t want to waste athleticism because he only get this chance once. Hoping it’s not that sort of thing

caleb Swanigan reminding me and everybody that a young person can be haunted by the past and may hesitate very quickly on things because of their subconscious talking to them about things that probably will never take place again, but they can’t get it out of their head. Hoping and praying for the best for this young man!

James is making decisions that will haunt him for the rest of his life. He has the talent but the upbringing off field issues are very hard to get away from. It’s one of those scenarios when it could for either way in life. Hopefully he finishes school at some point and doesn’t end up in a very bad spot. Hopefully he gets away from the state of indiana completely.

Man, I hope this kid has or someone can get his head in the right direction. We see this all the time. To many kids either think they don't need to work as hard or personal issues that they can't get passed. Either way this kid has a long road ahead of him and I hope that someone watches over him.

Landed or big time recruit that was productive?

I don't think Markell was that widely recruited outside of the state. Set all kinds of records in HS but never translated to college; I remember reading of how Hazell was going to "go to him as our best offensive weapon" and thinking uh oh, he won't last the season. I always liked him, and to his credit to of his best games were the Bucket games.

“how healthy he is throughout the season”.
I’ve never dissed the young man, but healthy for a full season is a concern. Others will have opportunities one way or another if anything to keep Doerue’s carries to a count to get him thru a full season and Purdue bowl elgible.

How many transfers are allowed since the inception of the portal? I thought it was one & no questioned asked as to why.

I think transfers are still unlimited. You just get the one freebie where you don’t have to sit a year if you enter prior to the deadline.

I think he was a parade all American first team selection.
