Rutgers 39 Purdue 25 at the half

Rutgers without their top scorer, Purdue without one of their top 3 players (Layden). Today showed a bit of how bad this team is without Layden, without running the offense through Jones or Puryear. Ugly game, ugly loss.

Negatives -

Bass - bad decision maker, bad shot selection. With Layden out, Bass was given more run and it hurt the team. Air balled a point blank shot in the 3rd. Airballed multiple 3's? She's shooting 19% coming into this game.. someone should let her know.

Swanson - 7-20 for 17 points, 2-11 from 3. 3 TO's. She had some nice moments in the 3rd to start but so many bad shots taken, turnovers, missed assignments on defense. Kept shooting when she should of been post feeding the two bigs. She has a temper, it showed probably the most in this game. Sophie actually had to be held back by her teammates at one point as she was jawing at a Rutgers player. She also is very reckless when going after loose balls and trying to block shots. I'm glad she hasn't hurt anyone because of it. I do like the fire, just needs to keep the emotions in check.

Positives -

McCarthy - 9 pts, 7 reb. I was critical of her last game so let me point out some positives which were on display today. Strength - she is very tough to move and did a solid job sealing her player, grabbing rebounds. When she can just receive a post feed, take 1 or 2 dribbles, and go up, she can be effective. She had a size advantage and I wish Mckenna was playing to give her some of those over the top passes when Lana would reseal for the lob.

Jones - 4-10 for 13 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast. Only 3 TO's(one late when the game was already decided) A little bit of everything from Spider today. She's really improved this season on finishing through contact.

Puryear - 6-6 for 12 pts, 5 reb. Battled foul trouble but started to produce once she was able to play sustained minutes. Continued to show her arsenal of post moves. Bright future for KP.

Overall thoughts -

A game we probably should of had, CKG should take some heat for the gameplan. Rutgers best player had to guard our post players, and Purdue didn't do a good enough job of forcing the ball in there to draw more fouls on Adams. We had the size advantage. Most of the team seemed unfocused.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun Superbowl Sunday!

Looking at the box score, we lost this game mostly from our propensity to foul. McCarthy, Puryear, and Swanson all fouled out. We only played 8 players, with Learn not in this game for a reason I don't know. Swanson was leading scorer with 17 points, but needed 20 shots and 2 fts to get there. Our frosh centers shot a combined 10 of 12 from the field but only shot 2 fts while committing 10 fouls. Lombard scored her only 2 points as time expired, Collier was 2-6 for 6 points and 2 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals to go with 3 TOs. Team stats were very close other than fts. Purdue and Rutgers each had 39 rebounds. Rutgers had 19 TOs to Purdue's 18. Rutgers percentage was 43% to Purdue's 41% but Rutgers shot 38% from 3 to Purdue's 19%. All told it looks like it was an ugly pillow fight between two really bad teams.

We lose 78-69. Better second half but still Geez. 4 of 21 from the 3. Only 6 turnovers in the 2nd half, but the first half doomed this game. This season might need to end, at least for the fans.

Purdue needs to win the home game against Northwestern and the game at Penn State to qualify for the BTT, or the season will end without any postseason play at all.

Looks like it might end a little earlier than normal, Purdue needed this to have any hopes of making the big ten tournament. Matchmetically still in I think but we have maybe 2 winnable games left? PSU and NU.

It's hard to believe that Purdue is actually in this low place now, hoping to even make the BT tournament. I know history doesn't mean much, but it's hard to swallow for us oldies.

You mean Layden. She was in the hotel with the flu that the whole team had been battling all week. Swanson and Jones had to be given iv's so they could play per Tim Newton

Yes. thank you for the correction. I was looking up Learn's stats yesterday and wishing we'd had a coach that could have utilized her hat well instead of chasing her off and I guess her name was still in the back of my mind.

Purdue used to own the BTT. I suppose water will find its level eventually

I miss Learn the most out of all the players who have left. She played hard and with passion. I hope coach KG didn’t actually chase her off. We could have use her fire in some of these games we have lost. Karma has a way to catch up with you…,

There were rumors that CKG chased her and many other Versyp recruits out as they did not fit her plans for the team. Not sure what her plan is other than stand around on the perimeter on offense and ball watch on defense.

You're slipping Michael! You also called the Wisconsin players Stuelke and O'Grady last Sunday. This season has really taken its toll on you. JK

I at least caught myself on the Stuelke mistake and edited it correct. (thought I had gotten away with it honestly VBG) But since the Learn mistake had already been quoted, I decided to just let it stand. I have never claimed to be perfect, the difference is I own my errors and mistakes. I don't attack others to try and distract people from my errors. This is all just for fun and we are all here because we love Purdue women's basketball and we are all suffering through this level of incompetence on the bench and in the ADs office.

Yeah I'm just busting your chops bud, better days ahead. Hopefully sooner than later!

Anyone know why Reynolds didn’t play? She hasn’t played well but she needs to play 15 minutes a night at this point.

She's injured
Yes, I just finished reading Mike Carmin’s game summary in the Greater Lafayette Sports Report - his last sentence says “It’s unlikely Reynolds and Poole will return this season”. Ouch.
(He said Reynolds has a shin injury and Poole has a high ankle sprain).

Outlook is …. bleak.

Apparently several players battling illness, gosh what else can go wrong ? 😑

Gearlds given a lifetime contract?

Disappointing to hear about Amiyah, I thought she might come back for a few games and play 8-10 minutes a game. Her stat line reminds me of Laydens last year. Hopefully she makes a similar jump production wise that Mckenna did this season.

All 6 remaining games are winnable. But if they don't stop giving the ball away they won't win any of them.

This was a very winnable game.....but 12 first half turnovers got them behind and they could never get back on top. Very disappointing.....every team turns the ball over. Sometimes the other team forces you to turn it over. But the majority of these are just lack of focus turnovers. Passes that have zero chance of being completed. It's like they didn't learn anything from last week's win.

I will give credit to Rashunda Jones. She played a good game for someone who had to have fluids pumped in her before the game. Swanson had to get fluids too I think.

McKenna Layden was really missed. Hope she's back for the next one.

Credit to Lana McCarthy and Kendall Puryear. They both played a good game. They played hard. They both have a bright future here if they don't jump ship after the season.

Heaven forbid! I want to see these young women blossom into very good players right here. We lost two good ones in Learn and Stevenson. That’s enough

Never say never, but I don't see either of the two transferring, unless they miss home. Puryear seems to have a starting spot, or at least a bountiful of minutes secured for next season.

Seems like McCarthy has more of a hill to climb, but I hope she sticks with it.

I think some are selling Lana short. I have a feeling in high school she didn't get much in the way of coaching or skill development. It was probably...."she's the biggest and strongest player on the court. Let's just give her the ball at the basket and let her shoot it over everyone". This is probably the first time in her playing career where she is facing players nightly as big or even bigger and stronger than she is. It's a big step up. I would like to see Guyton take her under her wing this off season and just work endlessly on skill development and confidence building. She seemed a lot more confident earlier in the season. Getting your shot swatted away regularly for the first time can do that to you.

I watched a few of her HS games, and Puryear's as well. They played very weak competition from what I could tell. The games I saw they both looked like they had a good 5 inches or more on everyone. They were doubled alot. I'm sure they both didn't get the best coaching. I've heard they're both in the gym alot(actually the only two I've heard CKG speak about getting extra work in), so no doubt they've both made each other better going 1v1 all the time.

Someone mentioned post players having the most difficult time adjusting to college that first year and not facing other girls their own size on a consistent basis in HS is probably a huge reason for it.

This brings me to Avery Gordon. She might be pretty raw skill wise her first year.. I've only seen one game and a couple highlight clips and I haven't really seen her post someone up and make a move. It's pretty much like you said "throw it up to the biggest girl, and let just turn and score".

My hope is that her ranking and all her offers prove she's more polished and ready to contribute at a higher level than Mccarthy was. It looks like Avery has a softer touch around the rim and is a better FT shooter than Mccarthy but I could be wrong. She does a good job keeping the ball up high on rebs too. Another 2 inches doesn't hurt either.

Anyone else have a better idea on how Gordon might project as an incoming Frosh?

Gearlds has averaged about 3 transfers a year, so its likely we will have at least that many after a really disappointing season like this, especially when you look at next year and there is little reason to hope next year will be any better. McCarthy will be a backup the rest of her career here behind Gordon as long as Gordon stays healthy, especially with McCarthy's horrifically bad foul shooting IMHO.
