Alabama, Purdue pro days: Mac Jones shows out; Rondale Moore, Patrick Surtain help themselves

By Chase Goodbread

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- With the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine operating under a different format this year, pro day workouts are taking on a heightened importance this spring. Alabama and Purdue were among the schools that held their pro days on Tuesday, giving some top 2021 NFL Draft prospects a chance to make an impression on scouts and NFL executives.

Representatives from all 32 NFL teams attended the Alabama pro day. Among those spotted at the event: Bills GM Brandon Beane, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, Jaguars GM Trent Baalke, Vikings GM Rick Spielman, Washington Football Team GM Martin Mayhew, Titans GM Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel, Steelers GM Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin and Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Moore measured 5-foot-7, two inches below his listed height at Purdue, but he wowed with his testing and workout on Tuesday. He posted a 4.29-second 40 and 42.5-inch vertical, per NFL Network's Stacey Dales, who was on assignment in West Lafayette, Indiana.

It was the kind of performance he needed after losing some buzz over the last couple seasons. After breaking through as a freshman, he played in just seven games from 2019-2020 and averaged fewer than 8 yards per catch this past year. Jeremiah projects Moore as a likely third-round pick with a chance to go late in Round 2.

"That 5-foot-7 size doesn't really show up when you can run away from everybody and that's what he did at Purdue," Jeremiah said. "So, you're buying the fact that he can return to what he was in 2018 and be healthy and dynamic and explosive. I think there's a lot of love on the streets for this guy around the league."

2021 NFL Draft: Purdue's Rondale Moore posts blazing 40-yard time in impressive pro day performance

The wide receiver clocked an unofficial 4.29, which would've been a top 10 combine record

By Cody Benjamin

Rondale Moore already figured to enter the 2021 NFL Draft as one of this year's most explosive prospects. The 20-year-old Purdue wide receiver has even been compared to Chiefs star Tyreek Hill because of his play-making ability. But now NFL teams have even more reason to zero in on the wideout in April. On Tuesday, working out in front of scouts at Purdue's pro day, the speedster posted rare marks -- and perhaps some of the best of his class -- in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump and other drills.

A year after Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III, then of Alabama, led the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.27-second 40 time, Moore reportedly came close to matching the mark, running Tuesday's pro day 40 in an unofficial 4.29 seconds. That would rank as one of the top 10 all-time combine 40 times, if it were official, according to Athlon Sports, just behind record-holders like John Ross (4.22), Chris Johnson (4.24), Marquise Goodwin (4.24), Jacoby Ford (4.28) and Champ Bailey (4.28).

Moore's 42.5-inch vertical jump would also mark as one of the best in recent combine history, even though his was recorded at a pro day. The all-time record is held by Gerald Sensabaugh, who leapt 46 inches in 2005, but for reference, Seahawks standout D.K. Metcalf was widely considered the star of his combine in 2019, and he leapt 40.5 inches, 2 inches below Moore. Metcalf's 40 time was also slower, as he posted a 4.33-second dash before becoming a second-round pick of Seattle.

Moore played just seven games between 2019-20, opting out of action due to COVID-19 after battling injuries, but won 2018's Paul Hornung Award for a multipurpose breakout with the Boilermakers, in which he caught 114 passes for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns. He's widely projected to be taken in either the first or second round of this year's draft.

Purdue WR who draws Tyreek Hill comparisons runs blazing 40 time at pro day

By John Healy

The 2021 NFL wide receiver draft class may not be as deep as the year prior, but there is still plenty of talent up for grabs.

While everybody knows about Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, other receivers have been flying under the radar.

Particularly Purdue wide receiver Rondale Moore.

Moore, who opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID after three games, reminded everyone on Tuesday during Purdue’s pro day that he may just be the fastest of the group.

The 5-foot-7 speedster was clocked running his 40-yard dash at an unofficial 4.29 seconds.

Had there been a combine this year, it would have ranked in the top 10 40 times off all time.

While Moore has garnered comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill for his small stature and lightning-quick speed, his 4.29 40 comes in a hair short of Las Vegas Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III’s 4.27 mark from last year.

Moore’s height may be of concern to some scouts, but his vertical jump was impressive, too, showcasing a 42.-5-inch vertical.

For comparison’s sake, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf had a vertical leap of 40.5 inches. The all-time record is held by Gerald Sensabugh, who reached 46 inches in 2005.

Moore’s display of his athleticism on his pro day was fairly important because there has not been much tape on him in recent years — playing in just seven games over the last two seasons — something that may negatively impact his draft stock.

The last full season he played was in 2018 when he caught 114 passes for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Still, Moore has been projected in mock drafts as a late first or second round pick.

The Packers, Saints, Ravens and Colts are all teams in need of a wide receiver drafting at the end of the first round. The San Francisco 49ers, who hold the 12th overall pick, were reportedly in attendance at Moore’s pro day.

Other teams, such as the Eagles, Dolphins, Jets, Bengals, Lions and Patriots could all use another wideout so it will be interesting to see how their draft strategies play out and if Moore fits into them.

Late edit ... I'd left out the part where Alabama and Purdue get mentioned in the same breath.

Anyone who thinks Rondale will last into round 3 is on crack.

Take out a yardstick and add half a foot to the end of it. When you see the visual, you'll be even more impressed.

5'7. Wow....that's pretty small, but the dude is stout and fast as hell. Probably similar to Tyreek Hill size or that RB the Saints used to have (brain fart on his name but he caught a ton of balls from Drew).
I think with 4.29 speed, Moore is picked up late 1st round by a spread offense.

I’m sure it was discussed but why didn’t he do the lifting reps? Seems like he would have killed it.

Darren Sproles
I really like the comparison. IMO Bell is much more dependable and a better pass catcher than Moore, but obviously Moore is much more dangerous after he catches it. I would of loved to see Moore take some snaps out of the backfield last year.
