RIP Jud Heathcote

Saw this about a half hour ago....RIP to a good friend of the conference and to college basketball. Maybe there has been some bad blood with some of our Spartan visitors, but to all the Michigan State supporters, sad to hear of Coach Heathcoate's passing.....and prayers and wishes of sympathy go out to his family and all of Spartan nation.

glad he did the taste of coaching roundtable show on btn last year, that was great

(only wish they had keady join him too but I guess he already made an earlier appearance)

Those have been really good and entertaining. I saw one with Gene Keady that had Bo Ryan, Tim Miles, and Mike Davis with Steve Lavin hosting. Would have enjoyed seeing Jud.

Those of you who are old enough might remember Heathcote was close to both Bob Knight and Gene Keady. It was a different generation of coaches. I thought you guys might appreciate a couple of good stories I came across in the many articles remembering Jud.

Columnist Shad Powers from The Desert Sun:

Never shying away from the most difficult courses in college, I took Basketball Coaching one semester and it was "taught" by Professor Heathcote.

I remember it was a Monday-Wednesday-Friday class that went something like this: Jud would be there only on Wednesdays and would sit at the front of the class and tell stories. The ones that if you hung out with him enough you'd probably heard 20 times before. His favorite was the one where his friends and contemporaries Bobby Knight and Gene Keady came to visit Jud in the hospital after Jud had heart surgery. The punchline to the story was that Keady said "If you need a new heart you can have Bobby's, it's never been used."

And here's another good one from landof10.com. I've heard this one many times but it always cracks me up:

“You know, Jud,” the irascible Knight said once, “you’re the only friend I’ve got in this business.”

“Don’t jump to conclusions, Bob,” Heathcote replied.

I miss those days where they fought like hell and were friends after. The coaches were a show and actually had more impact than today where the major options are limited due to the clock...and more humor! :) Thanks for the info...the heart I've heard before, but still funny. :)
