I know it's a long ways off, but which of the 2018 recruits do you see redshirting? I would assume at least one does, just to balance out the classes.

With Stefanovich and Wheeler as freshman next year, that makes a class of 5 without adding anybody else. I assume we will add one more, but I don't ever remember 6 players in one class.

It seems like Dowouna and Williams are the best bets, but we probably need help from bigs more than anything next year.

Our front court should have a lot of bodies next year. Someone will need to step up. So far we have Haarms, ED, Williams, Taylor, Ewing, and Wheeler for 2 positions. Eric Hunter most certainly won’t redshirt. So as of now, nobody.

There’s zero chance of Williams redshirting. He may start.

Good question. Both bigs are highly ranked, both have very good assets. One is athletic as hell, one is very skilled. But at the same time, one needs to see the strength coach, the other needs to see the conditioning coach.

Dowouana will need to if he wants to get through freshman engineering.

We do need a big to step up. Although I thought wheeler was more of a 3. And I’m not assuming we’ll get much production out of taylor and Ewing. Which is why I figured it would be hard to redshirt either incoming freshman.

Like I said tho, I’ve never heard of a six man class.

I agree and think that one of the two in the front court will redshirt. Hunter could too depending the circumstances, If we grab another point guard like Cambell then their is a good chance

I would put my money on DOW redshirting. He doesn't have much of an offensive game at this point. Purdue doesn't desperately need rim protection Haarms is great and Wheeler Ewing and Even Taylor are all passable.

I like Williams like a lot of posters but I wouldn't say its a guarantee he does not redshirt. Depending at what his weight and conditioning is like I could see it.

Wheeler is going to be a 3 when it is all said and done and Ewing will be more of a 3/4. Agree that likely nobody is a red shirt candidate next year barring injury.
1/2: Carsen, Eastern, Cline, Sasha, Hunter, likely one more commit
3: Wheeler,
4: Eifert, Williams, Taylor, Ewing
5: Haarms, Dow

If this would be correct, Purdue would be thin at the 3 as Wheeler appears to be the only real '3' next season. Ewing has the ability to play the 3 at times BUT needs to improve his perimeter defense with the transition from the zone to man. Likely CMP tries to pick up another larger combo guard that could play the 3 on defense like Eastern or grabs a '3' to help fill the roster.

I believe it's premature to talk about next year's redshirt candidates. We still have two more scholarships to give out. maybe those two will be redshirted. Looking at our three signees, they are not only very talented, but they are also slotted against what appears as positions of need.

Taylor is injury prone and by some people's account, he is rusty. That rust may never wear off, and he may never revert back to the player he once was. As this season wears on, we should be able to determine more about Taylor's future. If he sustains another injury, he may just hang it up. Or, he might regain his form and become a force. Or Haarms might become a force. And Ewing may emerge, or not. As it appears now, Williams and Dow, may see a lot more playing time than original anticipated. and depending on how Taylor and Ewing improve, or not, Painter might decide to use one of his remaining scholarships on another big man. Haarms may become our starting PF, with Dow at center. Or Haarms could stay at center with Williams at PF.

With Hunter's height, he could fill both a wing or guard position. We may have a 3 guard offense with Eastern, Edwards and Hunter.

I believe we should see how this year plays out before making plans for next year.

Next season you are likely to see four 'guaranteed' starting spots to Haarms, Boogie, Cline, and Eastern. From there, you look at Wheeler, Ewing, Hunter, Williams, and Taylor to fill in the final spot...and a lot of that has to do with finding which lineup is best for Purdue. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Grady slides in to that last starting spot given CMP's trust in him. The offense honestly runs better with him in it (moves the ball well and continues to set good screens for other players/rebounds well) and provides very good defense and rebounding there as well. I'll say the final starting spot goes to either Grady, Taylor, or Williams.

That likely then puts Wheeler, Taylor/Williams/Grady, Sasha, and Hunter as the primary rotation for next season. I'd say Wheeler is probably the first off the bench with one of the 3 4/5's as well.

How about Cline @ the 3? At 6-6" he has the length and is the larger combo guard you speak of....and his D is improved where he might handle that role. That give us an experienced starter there as compared to Wheeler out there which I am sure he will play there a ton....just not sure he is starter quality yet?.

Fair point. I started with just guards, forwards, and centers...but didn't like that. I just still see Cline as more of a big '2' guard but he would likely slot in at the '3' next season along with Eastern and Boogie at the other guard positions.

Cline
Taylor
Haarms

I like these types of discussions. Its fun to project and guess about the future!

But I must say... personally I don't agree with the notion that we ever have a '3'. It appears to me our standard lineup consists of 3 guards and 2 bigs. Then our motion offense is a 4 around 1 in the middle. I would argue that we don't use a traditional '3' anymore. We play with 3 guards. Period. We primarily use a stretch 4 who can play both 3/4. That has been our style for many years now. Its been this way all the way back to Hummel and the Baby Boilers. He was a stretch 4, JJ in the middle, then we had 3 guards around them.

1 Big
1 Stretch 4 who can shoot 3's
3 Guards

That has been our desired lineup since CMP has been here. :)

What is a traditional 3 ---- an athletic/great rebounder who can shoot from outside and defend the other team's 3'rd tallest player? ... not debating, just clarifying.

Or, maybe the question is,, what is the difference between a traditional 3 and a guard .... what can a 3 do that a guard can't?

I'm not sure I ever see Cline as a starter! He's a great three point shooter! And he doesn't make huge mistakes.

I can envision a 3 guard and 2 big lineup . But with our players, I could see a multiple combination of bigs and a multiple combination of guards!

Our lineup will depend on who wants it bad enough to grab that starter position! It could be Wheeler , Dow or Williams providing a mix of youth and experience !

I liked the signing of Ewing, but I would think by now he has learned the plays and there must be some reason guys like Grady are getting more minutes.

Just a "tweak your brain" question (not yours alone Woley, but everyone's) ... Should Cline spend 90% of his time this offseason becoming an incredible shooter and become a true assassin who is mainly/only used to drop some threes, or should he work on his whole game? He has limited time and won't be playing after PU ....

Cline is already a pretty darn good shooter.

As others have stated, he'll likely be a starter next year, so I would hope he becomes a little more well rounded.

I would go for Cline being a trained assassin. Many here have complained that he's rather slow on defense and that the more athletic players he guards have no problem getting around him or making their shots. He doesn't make many turnovers, but I've also not seen him make any great assists or ally-oop passes either. He can't improve his speed or athleticism by practice. He can improve his shot.

To me he would provide a better service to Purdue basketball if he became like Reggie Miller or Crawford and was just a catch and shoot type player. When the Bucks were good, they had several players who averaged 15+ points as a 6th man just coming into games and shooting. it we're down, bring him in to add instant offense. And rather than having haarms or Wheeler or whoever is our PF trying to hit a three, bring Cline in and let him fire away.

Living in Illinois, I really didn't follow Cline's high school career. I saw the stats, and saw he was the Gatorade 3 point champ, and I also saw that very few elite teams other than Purdue had much interest in him. the y all saw his slow speed and thought he was one dimensional.

That's why I'd rather see Purdue developing C Edwards , Eastern and Hunter as ball handlers and distributers, with Cline just waiting in the background to come in and launch his threes. I realize his shot has been off this year. But I truly believe he could make a successful contribution as a shooting forward and allow Easter n and Edwards to worry about distributing it.

I am talking about next year.

There's nothing bad about having a reputation as a trained assassin.

So far this year, I think Cline's defense has been much better. He's not 100% healthy but has still played well. I expect him to be a starter at beginning of next season.

I've heard several people say his defense is better. but is it better enough that you would want him guarding the other team's top players next year? That said, I know nothing about hunter's ability to play defense against college opposition.

I could see Cline initially being given the starter's role until hunter proves himself.

But I can also see Eastern, Wheeler, Hunter, Dow, Williams, Ewing, Taylor and Cline all putting forth their best efforts to gain those starting positions next year. in order to play, they must play defense.

Why would Cline have to guard the other team's top players? Eastern and Carsen are good defenders, so Cline could easily be defending the worst of the guards.

Let me clarify.
When Cline enters a game now, is he guarding the other team's top player? We say his defense has improved, but what type of player is he guarding? In becoming a starter, he will be expected to play more minutes and also improve his defense even more for longer periods of time! I'm not sure he could play a higher intensity of defense for a longer period of minutes!

That's why I'd prefer he concentrate on becoming a catch and shoot guy and be a 6th man assassin!

Forget next year. I just want his shooting slump to end now and I’ll worry about next year then.
